HGIG means no tone Mapping, set the Ge brightness to output 800 to use HGIG and it will look the best if the HDR is good
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource Жыл бұрын
Good video. I think using the brightness control is better to use when making large black level changes, because that also controls the way way colors look too. You can get more saturation by just using brightness vs fine tune dark areas. Fine tune dark areas is best used when black levels are almost perfect, and they just need a minor tweak. If you use fine tune dark areas where black levels are completely washed out its not good, because fine tune dark areas only effects low black levels. That means that the rest of the image is brighter than it should be and the colors will not look as saturated. So, getting major adjustments with the brightness control will yield better colors and better dynamics. Then minor adjustments with fine tune dark areas and the end to have an image that pops more.

May be worth clarifying that you should take a screenshot of a scene that features an object that would logically be outputting the game's max brightness (the sun, bright neon sign, fire, etc) otherwise the HDR viewer may be reporting a maxcll that is too low.

@SevyTheGod
@SevyTheGod Жыл бұрын
@@mannyfresh7065 the game is outputting a luminance way above your TV's peak brightness. You'll need to set tonemapping to OFF and go into signal override signal secret menu and set maxcll and mastering peak brightness to the closest value you can find to 3300 nits. I'd also suggest taking a few more screenshots to confirm, 3300 seems like a weird value, I'd guess the real peak brightness is 4000 since that's more common.

This is very well-informed and researched. My issue with HGIG and with Astigmatism is that HGIG is too dim usually for me. Highlights are fine, but overall when playing darker games like Dark Souls, or any RPG really, it's a very dim image and very hard to see in certain areas. Now I'm in a decently black room but not fully black. As for DTM, I like the brightness of DTM but the white crush is super bad. I've heard others say to use HGIG, Color to 0 which will then help the brightness out more, and also change the color from Auto to Native, while it does make it a bit more saturated I've heard it seems to fix some of the issues with HGIG. I have a 77" C2, and I've disabled the two things in the service menu, I guess I need to try this new secret menu that was introduced. I've saved this video, going to try some of this out with NFS: Unbound. In NFS: Unbound, the night driving is perfect but day driving with DTM is bad. I've also noticed this in Midnight Suns too.

To report, now this is on my C2 with the new EVO Panel which gives it a 30% boost to brights. When I tried Blacks at 46 and set my PS5 to Limited for range, I did get a better overall picture with HGIG but still a bit dim. I also tried to fine-tune dark areas at -16 and -5 and honestly could not tell the difference. Now for the washed-out feeling, I'm still getting that even if I change my PS5 to limited, and keep it on Auto on my C2. I also set my color temp to 0 and it did fix a lot of the HGIG issues, it's still not super bright. I used to have QN90A (Samsung) which was a very bright TV but terrible for shadows or blacks. OLEDs should be able to produce decent brights (which I can see they do in the dark scenes very well) but in light scenes, it seems like I might have the wrong settings or something. I followed this guide from a REDDIT user and my SDR, for example, looks terrible and my HDR looks decent but I know could be better. Looks nothing like your HDR though. drive.google.com/file/d/10rH8tz37nT_plYAp1_bwvB2ZFx5Tf91T/view?usp=share_link

I would recommend you to first judge a game that doesn't have broken HDR on the PS5. Use HGIG on a completely dark room with default black level (search for a good HDR game without black level raised) then if you still think that it's dim turn off TPC and GSR on the service menu at your own risk.

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 Yep I noticed on watching a series on Netflix (Sandman) how bad the dimming was. Just as bad as my QN90A which is another TV for you can not disable GSR or TPC. It's why I got rid of that TV for a C2. The issue is most games, are still not made with HDR in mind, look at for example the new Final Fantasy Crisis Core that just came out, the game is not HDR yet FF7 Remake is. In other games like Spider-Man or God of War, the AAA titles are in HDR, but they are not using LG as they are supplied by Sony. I used to work in the game industry for a AAA developer many years ago, many of the developmental kits that the developers obtain are supplied by the console company in this case Sony will supply the developer with the kits but also TV, soundbars, etc. M$ does the same thing as their TV of choice is Samsung OLEDs, and they supply developers with Samsung soundbars which honestly sound terrible compared to a Sonos Arc with the backs and subs. With it off it does help the TV, I still get a slight white wash on some games like NFS: Unbound and Midnight Suns during certain spell animations, I just can't fix that it seems. I have looked at Vince's settings, P4ALO, and others, and I still can't get the deep blacks like IGN and you, and other media have with their OLEDs. I personally think my settings are off. SDR looks even worst to me, looks so whitewashed that it's not playable. Multiverses that looked fantastic on my QN90A look terrible on a C2 because the game is not HDR but an SDR game that you can not force to HDR. There are other games like this too when they do the HDR Upscaling, the graphics look terrible. As for brightness, I think I have the right settings now, but the color is my next priority. For some reason also, whites don't look white either. They look like an offset of white (Hex E4E4E4) instead of pure white (Hex FFF) and I've done this test on my PC too where my LG SDR monitors push pure white (FFF) accurately, but on the OLED they do not. This might need to be adjusted with the white balance, and I do not know, my eyesight is good but I need glasses that give me a blue light filter, and due to my astigmatism does make my eyes a bit wonky. Honestly again I think my settings are off, and that is where I need some assistance. BTW I don't use the TV as a PC monitor very often, only when giving presentations when needed, typically my work monitor is what I use for PC work and gaming.

I appreciate the link to this video from the previous. I understand what youre saying here and have done similar in most situations, but I'm wondering if I didn't explain what I was talking about correctly. So, in short, the VRR standard G-Sync forces a different tone mapping than using the VRR standard FreeSync. Freesync adheres to the same peak brightness of ~800 nits that HGIG calibration would set, regardless of picture mode selected, with tone mapping set to 'off' in these other picture modes. Whereas, on our C2, GSync only maps correctly using Game Optimizer with HGIG selected. This seems to offer higher brightness levels for specular highlights, while full scene brightness and color reproduction looks to be roughly the same as HGIG in both GSync or Freesync. I'm wondering what your thoughts and or testing on this comparison would be? You dont have to go out of your way to make a video or test if you don't want to, of course. It's just an interesting difference between GSync and Freesync that I haven't seen anyone cover. I'm not sure anyone has tested this, either. In any case, thanks again for your videos, they're very informative and are right up my alley. My own channel is born out of my own curiosities!

I understand your statement and I would check the HDMI signaling override menu, you might have Mastering Peak MaxCLL 700 or 1000, there's no 800 value on the TV and Freesync can't change that. I will still look into it and I'd make a video if that's the case

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 OK, interesting. I'll look into how to do that and see what I can come up with. This is kind of what I was wondering, if Freesync was following the HGIG information with it enabled, and setting to 1000 nits with DTM off or something similar. I appreciate the info!

Discovered this problem of a Grey or Washed Out looking picture with my A2 65". I mostly use it for movies but I was trying to fix this grey looking filter and your suggestion helped. Black Level / Video Range set to Limited crushes too much but I think I may use it as the Cinema Home preset for watching SDR movies so I dont have to switch HDR off on W10. Otherwise I use Screen Brightness set to 48 or 49 instead of 50 and that helps reduce the washed out look. Im having a hard time deciding which though since I prefer 48 on brighter scenes and 49 on really dark scenes. At 47 I almost completely lose the darkest boxes in the same test pattern so I wont go any lower for movies tho and I do use Tone Mapping as I find it working really well on most movies. Also do you think Im missing out on the HDR calibration App on W11? My CPU cant upgrade to W11 so Im not sure if Im missing out a lot or just a little bit, should I spend 100$ or so to get a better CPU just for W11 and the HDR app?

Hi, when you calibrate the hdr in windows will the maximum peak brightness value be different for the 48 and 42 diagonal? Peak brightness is about 720 nits, not 800 like on big TVs)
@plasmatvforgaming9648
@plasmatvforgaming9648 Жыл бұрын
It actually doesn't matter because HGIG is set to hard clip at 800 and regardless of the 10% window measurement the TV actually pushes a little bit more brightness in real content. There is a way to improve that and make it accurate with calibration by measuring the actual peak brightness of your individual panel and using Calman home for LG to create a Tone mapping OFF Curve to follow EOTF and hard clip at the actual peak brightness of the TV

That's because Forcing limited affects the whites and the clipping point of HGIG becomes 525 instead of 800, meaning you would have to reduce the game MaxCLL otherwise you would get clipping, so it basically looks brighter and more vibrant but you're losing highlight details

@@plasmatvforgaming9648 got it. So to summarize all your HDR experience with the example of Metro Exodus (not Enhanced Edition): I turn on Windows HDR slider, i turn on in-game HDR. As it has no HDR slider, i've to measure it's maxcll and force it via 1113111. Video Range should be on Full or Auto and FTDA lowered to -16. DTM should be OFF. I've measure Metro Exodus MaxCLL and it's 2772 nits, so i've set MaxCLL via 1113111 to 3000 nits. HEre's my overall settings: 1. i.imgur.com/bccXlf0.jpg (measure maxcll) 2. i.imgur.com/YJhPy6T.jpg (Black Level 50 default, Video range Auto, DTM Off) 3. i.imgur.com/EiLmQdl.jpg (MaxCLL via menu set to 3000) 4. i.imgur.com/53r7poS.jpg (FTDA set to -22 instead of -16 cuz it gives me better blacks still remaning all the shadow details compared to -16) Am I correct? And still comparing this one with SDR conversion through HLG DTM OFF, HLG gives me more vibrant colors and better pop-up highligts and deeper blacks and overall contrast as well. To me the game has more atmosphere with the HLG trick. Same for some other games like GTA V and RDR2. They looks more atmospheric with more pop-ups highlights using HLG trick instead of Auto-HDR or HDR ON SDR slider maxed out and MaxCLL 540 via menu. That's just my findings through all the videos I watched by you. And a big thank you for all your researches you've passed through. It helped a lot. And the HLG has become my best dicovery for HDR experience so far. Although i was quite disappointed to know that LG C2 42" has HDR peak brightness of only 700 Nits. I've been thinking it's same 800 as C1 and as it was claimed by LG. But Rtings and some other portals measurements says it's only 700 nits.

Fantastic job, that's exactly what CYBERPUNK is doing, the best option is 600 with HGIG. No, games are mastered in 2.2 gamma. It's film content that's mastered in BT.1886. When developers make games, they use standard monitors calibrated to RGB standards, which has 2.2 gamma as default. 2.2 gamma is standard for PC monitors, which all games are made on. I doubt the people who make textures, lighting, models and so on, all have $20K professional film monitors that get used for Hollywood films and whatnot.

I have a top end q900r QLED and c9 that I both use regularly. Both TV's from 2019. There is no saving the QLED when it comes to PC HDR content. It's embarrassingly not even close. I've looked at every setting under the sun and Samsung simply hates user fine tuning on this thing. Don't think I've ever found any hidden menu on that note.

Wait, so do you have to do this for every game?
@plasmatvforgaming9648
@plasmatvforgaming9648 Жыл бұрын
To get the HDR settings right, you need to know if the game supports the system level calibration or set the sliders for HGIG, otherwise figure out the Maxcll of the Game and set Tone mapping OFF Mastering Peak Maxcll=game Maxcll. The other thing is to check the black level and make sure it's not raised and it's washing out the colors, if that's the case, just lower it accordingly
