Most glazes in the bucket don’t look like what they will after firing.
@KaiCeramicsOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Clay and glazes will change in the firing. Glazes very rarely look like what they do before firing. The color of the wet is just the chemicals mixed up in water. During the firing, the chemicals melt and change to create the glaze and the colors depending on different chemicals used in the glaze formula.
@michaell91583 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video, but how did you get the glaze off of the ridges? Did you scrape it, sand it or...? Looks great.
@mollyauw84344 жыл бұрын
Was the glaze you dipped it in purple or how did you get the color afterwards? Sorry if this is a really dumb question, I am a COMPLETE beginner at trying to learn to glaze haha
@KaiCeramicsOfficial4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. Glaze does not look like the color in its wet stage before firing. The chemicals will change during the firing process to show the traits of the glaze. To get a better understanding of glazes and how they work, I recommend finding some books and literature on glaze chemistry.

Yes, all pottery needs to be fired in a kiln up to cone temperature required for your clay and glazes. If you are not sure what cone to fire to, I would contact your clay supplier and ask.

Question: i know you need a kiln to cook the glaze, however, do you think one could cook it with a torch? Mainly because i was wondering if someone could glaze a cob house.. What do you think?
@KaiCeramicsOfficial4 жыл бұрын
I recommend looking into cone temperatures. Clay and glaze need to be fired to a specific cone temperature over time in order to be vitrified and fired properly. A simple blowtorch will not get hot enough nor long enough to reach a proper cone temperature for most ceramics.

@AfricanSouthernCross6 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for this invaluable “lesson”, it’s what most learners such as much myself ask but never get answers to, but what is bisk as mentioned at approximately 0:29 and what clay is best suited for this type of pottery....is this ceramic or china ? Thanks again !
@kaitlynallison2436 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question! Bisque is when the clay has gone through its first firing, but is not completely vitrified or matured. This stage allows the clay to still absorbs moisture to make it easier for things like glazing. Once you fire the bisque through a higher temperature firing (such as a glaze firing) the clay body will then become vitrified enough to no longer absorb moisture, making it more food safe (assuming you fire the clay at a high enough temperature to vitrify the clay). It gets pretty complicated if you get too deep into it. There is definitely a science behind firing pottery. A bit much to explain here! As for the clay, I use a porcelain called Helios from Highwater Clays. This is not a china porcelain. I don't really know much about china porcelain, unfortunately. Hope this helps!

Yes, the only way to get rid of wax once it touches your bisque is to fire it off (I usually fire it back through the lowfire bisque firing if I make a mistake). So becareful not to get it where you don't want it! I currently fire my final product to cone 6.

I have a question about glazing. I recently purchased an older style Swiss military canteen and the inside of it was originally glazed over with some sort of ceramic but has cracked and chipped in places. I was wondering what I would need to put a new glaze on the inside and do I need a kiln to cure it or could I possibly do it over a fire or in my oven ?. If you could let me know if really appreciate it!.

Do u have to glaze it?
@KaiCeramicsOfficial5 жыл бұрын
In order for pottery to be food safe, it needs a glaze finish of some sort. Clay can only vitrify so much. It is still porous and will hold bacteria in any parts that food particles touch (or even your mouth). But it's really only necessary for vessels made for food.
