The story of how I got my first SEGA Genesis in the Summer of 1991 is also the story of how burglars broke into my childhood home and stole my NES. In this video, I detail that fateful day.

A similar thing happened to me. Some burglars broke into our home back in 1995 and stole a lot of our stuff. Among other things, they took our VCR and all of our VHS tapes, and all but one of our Sega Genesis games. This was really devastating to me as a kid, because the games belonged to my brother, who was in a fatal car accident just a bit before that. Luckily, they left the console, and Sonic 1 (I'm guessing because it had a NOT FOR RESALE label). The console has a sticker on the bottom that my brother put there with his name written on it, so I'm super glad they left it. But I've been obsessed with collecting Sega games ever since. It's silly, but I deep down I wanted to make sure that it would all be there in case he ever came back.

That's a great story! It started out bad, and ended on a positive note! I'm glad neither you, nor your parents were harmed. That really sucks that it even happened. I have to commend your Dad for being a great father in wanting to make you feel better. He would've bought you a brand new NES, but also offered to buy you a Sega Genesis. The way it worked out, I can tell you couldn't be happier. That Sega Genesis meant a lot to both you, and your Dad. I love how you two bonded over it! Great story, and great video as always! Oh, in all my years of collecting video games I've never had anything stolen from me. I have let my friends borrow certain games they want to play, but I always get the games back. They're trustworthy people, so I don't mind doing that. Whenever I would let my friends borrow games, I would say this to them "I have no problem letting you borrow the game, just as long as I get it back in the same condition I gave it to you. If you break my game, then you're buying me a new copy of it, or giving me what it's worth." As long as they were ok with that and understood that, I let they borrow my games. I never had any problems doing that.

A few years ago, my cousin who’s also an addict stole most of my Nintendo systems (NES, SNES and N64) and games during one of his binges. I have yet to replace them all but it was quite a gutting feeling knowing that a big piece of my childhood was gone. At the same time, though, I was relieved he didn’t take my Sega Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast. Those were my faves. But I did love those Nintendo systems a lot. I’m glad your story had such a happy ending though!

Never had anything stolen like that but almost! I lived on the Coast Guard base in Hawaii as a kid and nobody is there for long. I remember this kid Sid who had borrowed a few NES games from me. It had been a couple of weeks, so one Saturday morning I walked to the other end of the base to get my games back and a moving truck was being loaded up in front of his house. I talked to his dad about my games and he takes me upstairs and starts interrogating his son. "Sid, do you have this boy's Nintendo games???" Sure enough he had them and sure enough they were all boxed up. His dad had to unpack a box or two and dig them out for me. A day later and I probably would have lost them all. I really don't even remember much at all about that kid other than that incident 😂

I had original PSP stolen from my locker at work. Around 12 years later had PS3, X360 and Wii all kind of stolen (long story) by landlord. What bothered (and still does to extent) me most was losing irreplaceable save data….cloud saves were either not or little much of a thing then.

I was a Sega kid. My best friend had a Genesis and he would always bring it over. I wanted one so bad, but we got what my older brother wanted, so we had an NES and Super Nintendo. Christmas of 1994 we got a Model 2 Genesis for Christmas and I was so excited (I already had a few Genesis games that I would take over to my friends Thomas and David's houses who had the Genesis). Well the first day back to school after Christmas and New Years break, someone broke into our house and stole our Genesis (they didn't see our Super Nintendo because my brother always hid it from us so we couldn't play unless he gave us permission) and all but one of our Sega games. Shaq Fu. Everyone always would talk about how bad the game was and I would say "Yeah it is so bad that when they broke into our house, it was the only Genesis game they didn't take." But, I loved that game and it was always special to me because they left it. Well my neighbor caught them and called the police, so most of our valuables were in pillow cases in our back yard, but they got away with the Genesis and games for it. Six months later, insurance finally paid out so my dad took us to the store to get a Genesis, but here is the kicker, the CDX had been out and wasn't selling, so Toys R Us had it on clearance and that is what we got. We also got a ton of CD games that were $10 or less, one of which was Lunar Silver Star Story and Final Fight CD. I was able to later get Sonic CD and it came with a collection that had Sonic 1 on it, but I never got back Sonic 2, 3, or Sonic and Knuckles on the Genesis.

I was a young adult by then, but I had my Xbox 360 and all games stolen in 2013 (the one I had gotten as a gift for graduating high school the previous year), along with other things of value. I was actually still in the house at the time, I had just decided to sleep in that morning. I walked downstairs to notice the TV was missing, I ran back upstairs to see no Xbox its usual spot. By the time they caught the person, they had already sold the stuff. My heart sank. I ended up getting a new console for Christmas the following month, but that was the first time I ever had to deal with something like that. Though one of the games they stole was Sonic '06, so can at least laugh about that 😂😅

Thieves who steal from kids are the absolute scum of the earth. Had some break into my shed once, but I'm such a messy collector it would have taken them hours to go through it all, but they stole my brother's monkey bike that were about to get rid of as it had an incredibly dangerous pull cord to it, so we found out who nicked it as they lost two fingers trying to get it to run (not a joke)

I had my PS2 and all my games stolen when I was 22 back in 2002 when my house was broken into and robbed. It was the first time I had ever been part of a burglary. Oddly enough as bummed as I was, I was just happy that nobody was injured (I lived with a couple of friends at the time). This video is old now but I just found your channel about a month ago. I had just moved into my 1st apartment. I was about 19 or 20 yo (I'm 38 now) I had saved for the xbox 360 all summer and preordered it in June. Payed it off slowly throughout the summer. Well I finally got it around December. It was sold out and I had to wait a few weeks. I had gotten it with perfect dark zero! (Love that game btw) so I moved to my 1st apartment not long after. Maybe April. I had acquired kameo, fight night 3 and Gun. Perfect dark as well obviously. Someone came in and took my pillow case and stole everything for my xbox 360 (games, hdd, console, controllers, headset and either net cable. I was so devastated. I came from a poor family so this was a huge blow. I ended up thinking I wanted a Wii. It was being shown off through ads. I ended up saving just like I did originally and got the core xbox 360 with perfect dark again. The pain is real. Sad thing is that someone you knew probably did the crime 😢

Great story Tyler! I remember walking home from school, my junior year in college. On the 15 minute walk from the bus stop to my house, right in the 'hood at like 8:30 PM in November so it's super dark, there's a bridge spanning a small bayou and as soon as I crossed over, I was jumped and everything was taken from me! Including a necklace my grandmother (who now has dementia) gave me, and my Nintendo 3DS with a copy of Kirby's Triple Deluxe. It was a very traumatizing experience, but out of it I finally ended up getting a car so to not take the bus anymore, and later for Christmas the recently-released New Nintendo 3DS XL which I still have to this day!

Hello I will take the oportunity to vent, sorry for the incredibly long text. It's 1999, the worst year of my life, even worst than 2020, because in October of that year my mom died, but lets go back to February, I was on my early twenties and didn't have a job at the time, still living with my mom and grandma, they were both retired and had to cash in their monthly check, so I went along with them, even though they were still perfectly capable of going on their own. After an hour or so, we returned home (we used to live in a small building in the corner of a very large street in Mexico City) we get out of the elevator and I proceed to open the door only to find out the main lock was already open, "I forgot to lock it up" I thought. As I enter I feel something is wrong (where is my dog?) I looked down the hallway into my bedroom and something looks different, I don't see my 36 inch TV, and remember, this is 99, so that is a very large, very heavy CRT TV. My mind races towards tragedy and imagines a broken TV on the floor, dog crushed beneath it because somehow she managed to make it fall, but as I enter the bedroom I notice there is no TV anywhere and no dog (where is my dog?) the room is in a state of disarray, even worst than usual and the TV is not the only thing missing, there is no Stereo (it was an entry level Dolby digital by Sharp, recommended by EGM) no VCR, some consoles missing too, at this point realization kicks in like a tsunami and I yell: "NOS ROBARON" (we got robbed) repeatedly. My mom and grandma are just entering and the door is still open so my screams can be heard by the neighbors My mind is overcome by anger and frustration and fear, I hear the dog inside the bathroom, I go there in a rush and there she is, completely unharmed, thank god, being a husky she probably greeted the burglars in a friendly manner, that probably saved her from being hurt or worst, I check twice, thrice, she has no injuries at all. What they stole: The huge TV from my room, a couple of VCRs, a small 14 inch TV from the living room, the Stereo minus the wall speakers, all of my music CDs, 50 or so, most of my mom's "jewelry" which was mostly cheap knock offs, only a ring with a tiny ruby and a broach with a tiny sapphire were the real losses. The videogame stuff: They took my N64 with Mario inserted on the console, my Playstation, Sega Genesis model 1 with Sega CD model 1 and 32X, a Nomad I kept next to my bed in a bag with seven or eight loose Genesis cartridges, all of my Playstation games which were around 25 at the time, including a japanese Soul Edge and some games that now are quite valuable like Klonoa and Castlevania SOTN. But the remarkable thing is what they DIDN'T stole, they left my SNES and all of it's games, they were 15 or so and among them was Dracula X which nowadays is quite expensive, besides Mario, they didn't took any of the other 4 games for the N64, aside from the loose cartridges with the Nomad, they didn't took any other Genesis games, I had around 50 at the time, they left behind all of the Saturn games, almost 40, and all of the Sega CD games (24) including Snatcher, Popful Mail and both Lunars, and the icing on the cake: THEY DIDN'T STOLE MY SATURN. I can almost hear them say: "nobody wants those, it's not worth the effort". I can only conclude, that they were very keen on stealing the large TV and they were in a hurry, otherwise they would have taken more stuff, or maybe the Sega games looked like books to them or something. The aftermath: While I was closing the apartment door, right after finding my dog I heard one of the neighbors calling the Police, but they never arrived and I didn't want to call them, I knew that even if they catched the thieves, you almost never get your things back in these cases. When sunday arrived I went to my local videogame shop, the owner was my friend and after hearing my story gave me a great deal of credit so I could start buying again my stuff, most of it now used instead of new, but I was not complaining, even if I now my Genesis and Sega CD were both model 2 units, with time and a new job and of course credit, I was able to buy almost everyting again before tragedy stroke in October with my mom dying of a heart attack and my grandma following in April of 2000, during those awful times, one of the things that helped me go through it all was my brand new Dreamcast which I had bought at launch, but that is another story. The things I never got back: The japanese Soul Edge, Virtua Fighter 2 for the Genesis and Street Fighter EX for the Playstation, mainly because they weren't that easy to find and I wasn't that much interested in getting them back, luckily I did bought again both Klonoa and Castlevania SOTN (now used but in great condition) for about $20 USD each. If someone read all the way here, thank you.

That happened to our family back in 1999.When I was 5 years old my mom was at grocery store and my dad was at work.My grandma was visiting from Mexico and my grandma took me and my sister to the park down the street.I guess one guy broke the window 🪟 and stole our TV and the VCR with some VHS tapes📼 I was thankful my Nintendo 64 games did not get stolen our neighbors heard the burglars breaking in and he called the cops.

It is sad what happened to your NES but that is a really great story about how your parents got you the Genesis and you all turned a bad situation into something great. I didn't get my NES stolen but in the summer of 1993, my sister decided to put lipstick inside of our NES and it stopped working. My family didn't know how to fix it so we threw it out along with our games. That was hard but similar to you, the situation got a lot better because my family got a Super Nintendo and Genesis within the next 6 months. The only thing of mine that I can remember getting stolen that I really liked was a Terminator action figure from Terminator 2 when I brought to school and someone stole it when I wasn't looking. My parents bought me that action figure when I was in kindergarten and I had begged them to buy me it for a long time.

Phew, I'm glad no one was home when that happened. So many horrible acts start out as "just" a robbery. That it is awful though. Glad everyone was safe and the story had a happy ending. (You know, I guess one of the reasons I love a lot of JRPGs and stuff is there's pretty much always a good ending. People don't just rob people and get away with it, good always conquers evil, people always learn from their mistakes, and the worlds are normally just so much kinder and forgiving places. I wish we could make this place a little more like that.)

For me, it was when my cousins were over during a typical fall Sunday when my dad had everyone over to watch the Browns (this was pre-move to Baltimore, and I’m sure anyone any younger than me would hardly believe it, but the Browns were actually Super Bowl contenders back then) My Nintendo was on one side of the basement on the big old box TV, while my dad and uncles and cousins watched the Browns on the bar TV on the other side of the basement. Well, one day the Browns had a big halftime lead, but as the fourth quarter ticked down, they had given it up while my cousins and I had given up playing Nintendo for the time being and were outside d!cking around. However, being the little a$$-wholes we were we had left the Nintendo on at full volume, beep bop booping on the one side of the basement while my dad seethed at the Browns impending defeat on the other. And as the beep bop boops played as the soundtrack for a ruined Sunday combined with my dad’s tendency to get violent with inanimate objects when angry, particularly when a few beers deep (absolutely non-abusive to actual ppl. I have the same unhealthy anger habits which my old Xbox controllers learned all to well when Call of Duty was peak) and, let’s just say, when my cousins and I ran back in to finish whatever game we were playing, the game and system had become a pile of rubble 🥹 apparently it only took one slam of his fist like a sledgehammer to put an end to all the beep bop booping….😅 sober dad felt really bad though and bought us another the next day

I'll never forget the day I walked into our house when we were burglarized. As soon as I walked in I knew something was wrong and it was strange because there was nothing really shuffled in the living room, but I just knew. It was the night Julio Cesar Chavez fought Oscar De La Hoya for the 2nd time. Me and my mom came home and we walked in and I just remember looking around then immediately going into my room and gone was my Nintendo 64. They just took the console and left the cables behind and the cart that was in it was Golden Eye. I could still see the cables just laying there on the floor of the red carpet in my bedroom. I then yelled out for my mom and she said a bunch of her jewelry was missing. Sad but it couldve been worse, we couldve been home when they decided to rob the house. Love the vid Tyler. Peace!

When I hear about thieves, especially those who steal from KIDS, I have to ask: what are those scumbags THINKING? I don’t know when/how you got your NES replaced eventually but I would not only go for the Genesis, I’d still go about getting a replacement NES eventually as well, even holding onto my existing games, even if I don’t manage to afford it until the $50 toploader arrives in 1993! Some burglars tried to break into my childhood home only 10 days after I WAS BORN! (But weren’t successful) One time when I was in boarding school (worst 7 years of my life), one of my bullies stole from me my copy of Neo Geo Pocket Color game Puzzle Link, I tried interrogating him but he kept saying “I gave it to another student”! In the end, the staff found it, turned out the culprit hid it in the backyard within the greenery! Just under a year later, another one of my bullies told me “there’s a soccer game on tonight, if your team loses, you have to give me your copy of Bomberman Tournament” (GBA game), my team lost but the staff disciplined said bully and I was NOT faced with having to give him my copy of said GBA game!
