Pat's just a good fucking dude. Nice to see someone who knows what they like and doesn't have to conform to either mainstream society's definition of a man or the total tough guy image. To be a real individual is an achievement these days.

I think it was the author Jim Harrison who observed that boys tended to gravitate either toward stick-and-ball games or toward the woods (hunting, fishing, etc.). By the time I was 12 I headed into the woods with my binoculars and bird book.

Always cool to hear Pat Mac talk about his “sissy” hobbies. Did people ever try to bully you for your hobbies? It’s nice to see that society is a little more open minded about letting kids pursue their interests.

I recently got into birding as one of my numerous, what I call, "micro-hobbies", which are often short lived and unperfected. It's awesome to see that a man like Pat Mac can indulge in a less "manly" hobby as well. Favorite bird I've identified so far is the Tufted Titmouse, for various reasons. It's fun to be out and identify stuff you never knew the name of, be it birds, snakes, trees, plants, etc.

Hey Pat, all winter this year I have had a female leucistic House Sparrow visiting the feeder. She's beautiful! And we have a pair of Cooper's Hawks that nest nearby. They raised three chicks last summer.

I used to see all kinds of birds where I used to live. A Merlin had a smaller bird for lunch ,Pileated Woodpeckers always in pairs going thru dead trees like a wood chipper and Hawks doing the dirty. All that right out the back glass door sitting on my couch.

Liked hearing how you began bird interest. Carolina Wren sings "Cheez Burger, Cheez Burger" A Freind & I rescue songbirds that hit the glass skyscrapers in Newark NJ, TRT made a video named 'Window Strikes in the Business District' of us picking up injured Warblers. In Newark most of the birds that hit the glass skyscrapers perish on impact, or when fall to the cement pavement. The injured get a 2nd chance. We even rescued a Peregrine Falcon that was seen years later in a diff state, Both red-tail hawks we brought in did not make it they had old & new gunshot wounds, broken talons, etc in additional to hitting the Glass. Skyscraper

It's nice when you get a bird parked on a branch in your backyard and you start mimicking it's call for a bit and then change it up only for it to start imitating you. One of those unexplainably satisfying things. Hummingbirds are pretty amazing if you can manage to see one, the way they float almost motionless looks fake and if you can get one to feed from your hand they become quite friendly. Crows/ravens are highly underrated as well and while they might not be as fierce or amazing as a BOP they hold their own in the intelligence department. Personally I am waiting for the first unfortunate person to discover a distant feathered descendant of the velociraptor with wings in the rainforest somewhere before I declare favorite bird but for now I will go with crowned eagle for brawn and common raven for brains.

Every time I see a prey bird I get a profound sense of well being. Red tailed hawks are my favorite. Was set up last weekend in my hammock in Missouri, had Black Hawk Down going on my audible, and saw the same two hawks for about an hour. A shit hot kind of day.
