Tip #1: Weighted Vs. Unweighted GPA Tip #2: Make Special Requests - Take as many AP classes as you can Tip #3: Save the Hard APs for Later during your high school career - Make a list of all the AP courses you want to take and save the hardest ones for your senior year Tip #4: Don't compare yourself - Make a list of your strengths and weaknesses and how to improve your performance for these subjects Tip #5: Make a strict after-school routine Tip #6: Optimize your work environment - Declutter your desk - Throw out any garbage - Lay out your supplies Tip #7: Try the Feynman Technique - Identify the concept you want to learn - Pretend to teach the concept. (you can use a mini whiteboard and pretend you're teaching an actual class) - Figure out gaps in your knowledge - Fill in these gaps by going back to your notes and textbooks Tip #8: Use spaced repetition - 7 days, then 5 days, then 3 days, then 1 day before an exam Tip #9: Split everything evenly Tip #10: Ask for help - Use StackExchange and ask questions on forums Tip #11: ALWAYS do the extra credits Thanks for the great tips!

This video came out a few days after I was informed I was graduating as class valedictorian, and I’m amazed at how many things you said are accurate and fall in line with what I did throughout high school. It was my goal since my first year too and I carefully selected which classes to take, knowing who I was going against and to be aware of which teachers graded harshly. 😂

I don’t know if you’ve mentioned this in any videos prior, but I suggest using the Pomodoro technique when studying. Basically it’s an alarm with a repeating study and break timer. You can adjust both settings, e.g. study for 25 min and break for 5 mins. this cycle repeats, and on some websites, when it hits the 4th loop, you can extend your break.

My school literally used the Feynman technique this whole time and i had no idea. This is how it usually goes: For a history class the teacher would assign a lesson, and then everyone would go home and read the lesson. During the next lesson the teacher would call on random students and have them explain the lesson to them as if they didnt know the lesson. While i was taking individual/one on one classes (because i was behind in school, due to me moving) my teachers would use this technique, and it helped me catch up to my classmates really quickly

I respect anyone who's aiming for valedictorian, but I also wanted to point out that from hearing all of this, I personally think that it's too much work for not a lot of payoff. It's an amazing feat, of course, and it looks good for college as well, but the amount of work and, more importantly, stress and anxiety, that comes with taking all these AP classes can be super detrimental to your mental health. However, these tips are really helpful even if you just generally want to keep a good GPA and gain good work ethic/study skills as well! Great video, thanks for making it!

This can be applied to prestige in general. Prestige doesn't matter lol, especially when it comes to college. Like I've never heard of an Ivy League student who had 0 regrets on going to their "top" college after just a few months being there. It's very easy to let prestige compromise your mental health or blind you from focusing over what's really important.

I was valedictorian when I graduated from my middle school, now I hope to get valedictorian again in high school. I believe you should take as much ap clases you can, but choose wisely. I recommend you choose the ones that can help you get into the college you want. My friend took many ap clases and was valedictorian, but when she applied for college some of her ap clases were rejected. This is just a recommendation.
@GenKoe6917
@GenKoe6917 Жыл бұрын
In most cases if you've taken a bunch of AP's, some credits will inevitably be rejected. However, if you're cognizant of which school you're going to (after graduation) and which ap's you're gonna take due to genuine interest (for example, mostly STEM classes or Humanities), more of your credits will likely be accepted. Though in some schools there is a maximum amount of credits. So it really depends, but try to have control over what to learn in order to get the most out of it.
@bungiyungi9362

I believe ap clases also prepares you for college. Taking the ap classes that corresponds to the field you know you will go to will help you in the future. It will also allow you to gain an understanding of how those clases will be like in college. But like you said take the ap classes that interests you the most and gives the most amount of credits.

The crazy thing in my school is that you can take as many AP's you want and no one will care, as long as you have the prerequisites and the capacity to handle those classes. Because of this some people next year are taking 7 APs as a sophomore. I am taking 6 as I also aspire to be valedictorian, but the outrageous competition at my school paired with these loopholes make it very hard to do so.
@blaxis3271

Same with my school. My highschool is really competitive but there is no class rankings. I personally think that they did that to cool down the competition between students. They just tell you what percent u were in your class. Sophomore’s at my school usually take 2 AP’s and I am planning on taking 3…
@JohnSmith-sq5mg

I don’t think taking 7 or 6 ap classes is a good idea you should make it less so you can focus on less classes landing you a higher gpa 4 ap classes is a good amount if you want to take a lot. If you take this much ap classes you will get like b grades and maybe c grades as it is just too much workload

After seeing your channel for the first time five years after graduating high school, I knew I messed up by taking no AP classes and striving for the minimum in freshman and sophomore year. I was an honors student but my schools didn't offer enough classes within my reach. The state of New York hated students like me who had anxiety disorder. Yes I was top of my tenth grade class but all other students at that school were failing. My mission now is to start a private school (prek to postdoc) for people like me who can't handle stress like hw or pass/fail. Im currently in my fifth year at an unaccredited higher ed institution because no accredited school is going to waive the requirements that are to stressful for people like me. Also there was one exam I took that was more difficult than anything Gohar ever did (English Regents) and it belongs in postgraduate school

Hi @Gohar Khan! I will be in 11th grade this coming year (class of 2025). I currently have a 3.9 uw gpa and 4.1 weighted gpa (because I screwed up and get a c in one semester in 8th grade 😭). I did not get a chance to take aps these past few years because of my counselor screwing up my classes, but I did sign up for 5 5.0 classes such as aps and dcs (dual credit), an honors class, and a regular class (bc i was forced to for some reason 🙄)for 11th grade and i took 7 honors in 9th and 10th grade combine. My grades (except that one semester in one hs credit class back in 8th grade) are pretty solid, around 97 average. Since my school is a new school, my class only has around 400 people. The last time I checked my class rank, i was top 9 in my class. I also planned to take 6 or 7 5.0 classes in 12th grade to bump up my gpa. Ik there are 5 smart people in my class and im afraid they will have higher grades and better classes than me. Based on these information alone, do you think I will have a chance to be valedictorian in my class for hs? If not, what do you think I can do better from now? I spent a year building the website from scratch, drawing on a lot of my computer science knowledge from college. I use my computer science knowledge even on the content side. For example, I'll write scripts to automate tedious parts of the content creation process or run analyses on my analytics. While I might not be a software engineer by trade, the problem solving and technical skills I picked up in college have been incredibly useful!

@@Oaypy No, if you tryhard maintaining that 4.0 UW GPA. Also, is your high school really competitive? Mine was moderately competitive in that the kids from the good middle schools actually did AP classes. From your description with your HS having APHUG, it seems pretty competitve. As long as you study well, your grades should be fine. The main thing you have to worry about is for your extracurriculars. Now the easy part is that much of it you can lie about, as they have virtually no way for them to verify it. Do some volunteering and do RELATED activities to what you want to study. Show the colleges that you are a well-adjusted and good person. Then your chances to get in are higher.

The point about taking as many AP classes as possible can’t be stressed enough. A lot of bright students who don’t try to game the system by taking easy APs or extra APs are disappointed in their rank by senior year even if they did amazingly throughout high school.

in my country valedictorian is just someone chosen by other students or (in my case) the coordinator asked us "who wants to be the valedictorian?", a girl raised her hand. I don't think she was the best in class, but her speech was very amazing

What I wish is that schools would teach their students how to study and educating that everyone is different so use what works best for them. I feel like these are tricks that you need to get into a habit early on so you are setup for success early rather than last minute. KZbin is a great resource and thank you for posting this. Imagine how much better students around the world would perform everyone was educated on studying tricks than having to figure it out by chance.

I should've taken AP Lit earlier because I was dying in AP Gov my Freshmen year, tho i passed with either a 97 or 100 (i forgot which one, I just know it wasn't under a 95). I got a 2 on the Gov Exam because I didn't study as much as I should've (plus I spazzed on the essays, and was too detailed in every sentence). Bro, I would've gotten a 5 easy on the exam because Eng Lit is so easy, like all u have to do is read, and if u suck at vocab, just buy a dictionary and memorize 20-30 words a week or biweekly. You only need good comprehension skills and good vocabulary to excel at Eng Lit, at least that's how I excelled at ELA for all my academic years, elementary to high school. Like I can't emphasize enough how easy Eng Lit is, especially if it's ur first language. Watch movies, and find the least sociopolitical movie your streaming platform offers. If you have to, just don't watch movies or shows from ig after 2017-2019 (so no 2017-2023 movies/shows), or watch movies and shows outside of the Western world (comprehending media outside of English speaking media actually helps with your comprehension abilities in general and with English). Just read your own novels outside of class and even in between classes, they aren't boring if you find a subject you find interesting, like two books made for someone with at least a 1200 Lexile level, so like 9th grade level if you're in 8th grade preparing for high school and ur high school lets u have AP classes as a Freshman. The Lexile level interval is not as high for kids nowadays, but at least aim for books made for ppl with what is now considered advanced reading abilities (1200-1700 Lexile levels). Honestly, Lexile ability test your willingness to try and understand a piece of text regardless of length and your vocabulary most, so read more to develop vocabulary and comprehension will come the more you read and build your mental library, aka what your mind is able to process and relay without much effort, like images from books you read won't be hard to process as you build how many books you read. You won't excel as well if you're reading books considered fit for your grade level, because that might honestly be low, but be critical of what's considered high. Don Quixote is an easy read for some people, while Huckleberry Finn might raise some eyebrows every so often. And take your time while reading, no one cares if you finished your test first, and the ppl that do won't make your grades any better. You don't need to read 1984 by George Orwell in under 5 hours just because it's considered a short read. No one will get mad at you for spending days on one book, pondering each topic in it, surely none of the writers of any of the novels would. Just stretch it out to fit your speed of comprehension and mental world building. I kinder deterred from the point I was gonna make, but I just want ppl to care about their literary abilities more, as English literature is so amazing. If you prefer Chinese literature or some other known to be great literature, go right ahead and enjoy it, especially if English isn't your first language, but giving English works a try is still a good idea because most literature regardless of place in the world is great.
