what you said about naturally picking it up is so true! i moved to japan about 4 months ago and i notice that even though i can't understand entire sentences or individual words, i am beginning to grasp the general idea people are communicating to me! it's so cool how the brain works in that way. i studied hard every day in america, but i've noticed more improvement in myself in the past 4 months (especially in speaking and listening) than i noticed in my entire year studying by myself back home. still, i think that foundation i built for myself has been a huge reason i've been able to skyrocket! keep working hard on your studies too, mochi sensei! we got this!!!!

I fell off my Japanese studies last month, but you're inspiring me to get back on it! I completely agree on the work hard everyday thing, and not giving up. Gotta make time, it won't make itself :)

I definitely hear words I know. I'm not able to hold a conversation yet. This is where I am at in my learning: ... word I know ... ... ... word I know .. phrase I know ... word I have heard before .... words ... words ... ... .. .. word ...

Your American English accent is quite good, it makes sense that you learned it naturally in an American environment. I worry my accent will always be noticeable when i speak Japanese.

her accent is very noticeable. just as native english speakers can tell when english is someone else's second language, your accent will be noticeable in japanese. its just the way it is. but, you can hear their accent in your language, and they can hear yours in their language. its honestly equal in a sense. why stress about it? heck, i live in a different state than i was born in, and after a decade of living in this state, natives can still tell im not born from this state. and its the same freaking country but a different state...

Don’t worry about having an accent. It doesn’t compromise your ability to communicate with somebody, which is the goal. We speak in English every day with foreigners who have accents and it never bothers us as a native speaker.

Thanks for your motivating words Mochi Sensei! Keep trying our best together! 😉😊 I don't learn English anymore actually but it's just because I can use it almost in daily life actually. I wanna visit Osaka in next year, so I started learning Japanese again. There are some Americans, some spanish guys 'Ola', and other nations on my workers place or on public places, so you normally have a good chance to start a smalltalk conversation (why don't you try to start a small conversation by yourself with a small situation joke). It's funny to see their reactions. When I realized there were some Japanese tourist around public places and sightseeing spots next to mine I just made a fun and said something like すみません and こちらです。while walking. They started smiling instantly :D Love these situations. That's why I like travling and learning languages, even if it's just for smalltalk. It makes fun. Greetings from actually Latvia, Andi 😙

Like how you learned English from hearing it around you goes with why I predominantly learn from anime and switching language over on games including biohazard and on Netflix find my American movies dubbed in Japanese and after 1 year now I actually learned 2 new words without subtitles and like you said not understanding word for word but knowing what you said, this is me from watching this video also and why I still keep subtitles on movies and biohazard game I dont look at subtitles but if I hear a word standing out then I look to figure it out and look at dictionary and 95% of time I'm right

もちせんせいすごいい。まいにち私は日本語をべんきゅうします。がんはってみっな。 sorry i dont know many kanji yet and reading just hiragana can be hard. Im studying everyday but new to learning japanese. My tip to everyone learning japanese is to learn hiragana and katakana right away. Both are super easy to learn. It only took me a couple weeks to memorize all of them. Learn 5 at a time and sit there and right them out over and over. Then learn the next 5 and write the 10 you know. Then learn 5 more etc. Being able to read and understand how to pronounce words not necessarily understand them will help you aquire new words. Also from watching japanese media you can read signs and random words and utilize the alphabets.

If you browse japanese KZbin you'll be able to pick up on words from comments and chat. You can also install the japanese keyboard on pc and mobile to start writing in japanese. The more you read and write the more you'll understand. That's my one tip as a beginner learner myself. Also watch japanese interviews and TV. Not just anime. Music too! Anything that can help you get listening practice in. But don't rely on subtitles. You don't have to understand everything. Just listen for the words you know. Even if you only understand a couple words in a sentence, you can get the gist of it. Goodluck everyone

I honestly feel like I'm stagnating in my Japanese. I can read Hiragana and Katakana without fail, and I can read some beginner kanji. However, I don't feel like I'm getting any better with listening and speaking. Like, at all.

It's like N4, maybe early N3. Don't worry about JLPT level, forget the levels and just listen to a shit load of Japanese, pick up on the cadences and rhythms and pitch direction of tone. As you study more vocabulary and grammar, you will understand why they are saying things a certain way.
