Inertia’s tricks will come in handy if you ever come across a child scared of dogs. Seeing a dog doing a funny trick sometimes helps children see that that dog isn’t so scary. Inertia has a whole routine. 😊

Best thing I ever did was teach my huge German shepherd boy to shake hands, wave and play dead. It was a hit with all the kids and even some adults who were scared of the "big bad German shepherd" when they first saw him. (He was a huge softy, but didn't look like it!)

Yh my dog does loads of tricks she is an assistance dog and comes to school with me there is a boy in my year with autism who had a phobia of dogs and when he heard Luna was coming he didn’t even want to go to school in case he saw her but I did little sessions with him and now he loves dogs he is scared of the claws so he will get her to do wave because he wants to high five but doesn’t want to touch her claws he also lets her sit on his lap with a pillow between them but he said when she’s had her claws clipped he is ready for her to sit on him without a pillow this has taken months of little sessions during break time to get to this point he loves watching her do tricks she did the talent show the end of last year and she came 3rd

She's doing great! Inertia is a great example of why intelligent breeds like border collies don't make good super chill family dogs. I ❤️ Aussies but they require far more stimulation and exercise than I can give one.

I have a border collie who is as calm as any other dog I've ever had. Perhaps I'm lucky. She is totally devoted, sweet to all people and perhaps a little timid around other dogs, but i can live with that. Her biggest problem is her desire to chase cars. I can control this while on leash, but I could never walk her off least anywhere near a vehicle ( and I mean 500 yards).

I agree so much! Seeing other trainers on YT makes it look so easy to train a dog and makes you feel so frustrated when it doesn't work for your own dog. Seeing him makes you realize that fails happen and that's OK. And it just takes time to properly train your dog! So much less frustrating this way!

Kelly Sinclair He makes so many mistakes, it’s a pity he doesn’t learn from them. He has condemned Inertia to a life of wearing a harness and being tethered on a long line. Ever asked yourself why Inertia is always so keen to eat from his hand, even when she appears anxious and stressed? It’s not normal, unless a dog has had food withheld from it for a long time to deliberately make it hungry.

I honestly can't believe anyone would disagree with this method of training. You are showing patience and understanding towards her whilst she's learning (something we all need when learning new things don't we?!). I have a reactive dog- we certainly have difficult walks and challenging days, but you have really helped me remain calm in situations that often make me feel upset and I know that her reaction is something she cannot help. I work WITH her, and the feeling that we both get when we make progress is so special. Your videos demonstrate just how important and rewarding it is to put in the work and not to just expect a quick fix. Audra Welsh in the same way people can’t help liking or disliking certain foods or preferences in life. If she reacts it’s due to her feeling uncomfortable or unhappy in the situation we’re in for whatever the reason, therefore not her fault.

Hayley Hamilton I agree with that, people can’t help hating or disliking things and neither can dogs. My last dog never wanted to be around dogs if he couldn’t help it. But, you don’t allow people to start screaming and hitting others just because they are in an uncomfortable situation, so why would it be different for dogs? If a person doesn’t stop the police are called and they are sent to jail, so why do people say that you can’t discipline a dog in a similar matter?

@@audrawelsh8467 it's true that reactivity can be trained away or drastically reduced most of the time. But using discipline on the basis that it works for humans is a flawed concept, human discipline doesn't translate into dog language/behavior. And it has all too many times created or worsened reactivity in dogs. So using smart, positive training not only avoids punishment fallout but is a completely viable way of changing not only a dogs behavior but their emotional response to things they fear or find challenging.

Amy Rex And that’s why you don’t use human punishment. A lowered, commanding voice and a correction on the leash is almost always enough to get the dogs focus for half a second, which you can then reward. Being a balanced trainer, most of the dogs I’ve worked with would take months, if not over a year, to train the dog not to be reactive, while one or two firm corrections gives me enough control over the dog to train them not to be reactive while walking in a matter of weeks. Completely negative training is what can often make the dogs behavior worse and i agree that good trainer should not have to rely only on consequences.

@@kellysinclair2004 just like a kid, I've noticed the dog goes through so many behavioural phases untill adulthood. Every 2 months something changed. If you've never raised a dog from puppy time you just don't know this and think they should know everything at 6 month.

@@kellysinclair2004 pulling was a big issue with my dog (being a sleddog) but she started to get better and better, she wasnt perfect untill adulthood (age 2-3) because everytime we'd go out she would just be too excited and there was almost no way getting her attention, so for a long time it was only the way back home where there was no pulling 😅 what i would do is either stand still until she would settle down and then continue walking or go back the other way if she immediately started pulling again 😁 it took some time lol!

I have used a dremel tool on my last three dogs: a Shiba Inu and two Pomeranians (including my current Pom). I've had no trouble with getting any of them used to it.

dremels are real easy to use.. just use the sanding drum piece on low.. you can even touch it and it won't cut you. just keep away from long things like hair that can get twisted up.

Just be sure to get one that has adjustable speeds so you can slow it down. They're pretty common nowadays. For practice, start out grinding something that doesn't matter at all, then use it to sand down your own or a friends thumbnail. That way you will get comfortable with it and have confidence before trying to use it on the dog's nails. :)

I really liked the flash cards idea, and loved the Dremel demo. Especially starting across the room with the noise. I use the same method for treat robots. If you can get the dog eager to get closer it is SO much easier than having to fix them getting startled or scared even just one time at the beginning.

Great information on handling how to walk your dog, thank you so much for sharing not only the successes, but the small frustrations and how you overcome them. It's really refreshing to see you going through some frustrations that I and others have. One thing I have noticed since rescuing my dog a few months ago is that we as trainers/owners have to be flexible, patient, and understanding of our dogs. My dog doesn't respond to treats/reward systems the same as Inertia does, but she responds so well to positive encouragement and general affirmation from me. Thank you for providing these videos, they always rejuvenate my patience and help remind me why I love having a dog!

I love how far Inertia has come. I loved the somersault. Although is that good for the dogs? Does it strain their neck in any way. I took my dog on his first off leash walk. He did great and heeled the whole time. If he gets a bit distracted, I use "focus" and he re gains his attention. He is 8 months old. Cant wait for next episode!

Wow, she is doing awesome. Look at that summersault! Her leash work is going really well too, good job you! My husky was (and still is) a bunny loving fool. I taught him to sit and watch on command (on walks). Then taught him to always focus on me again before we would continue walking. The idea was that he already wanted to pay more attention to a bunny than me, but by me asking for it he was listening to rather than ignoring me. You absolutely don’t need help (Inertia is doing fabulous), just thought I’d toss the idea out there for anyone who might want to try it. -Also, I don’t do Instagram, but I hopped over there today (for the first time) to check it out. Amazing work and such sweet pictures!! More people really should check that out, just sayin. :)

OMG this came at the perfect time! I am at my wit's end with a dog who doesn't listen to me and I know that is partly because I don't know how to make him listen. This is extremely helpful. My dog is very smart and almost ADHD as a result so it's nice to see someone training a similar dog. @@FullyAlive33 A lot of vids avoid sidewalks and streets because the hard surface isn't great for dogs' feet, and concrete/asphalt can get *really* hot in the summertime (if holding your bare palm on the hot surface is uncomfortable, imagine the dog's bare paws). But some folks simply don't have a lot of choice but to walk their dogs on the sidewalk or edge of the road.

@@bickle8931 what's your point? Cabral talks about doing things that have a high rate of success to keep confidence up, too. Obviously the puppy loses interest sooner or later, the point is to not keep pushing him with the same things that aren't working right now when you can see that coming. So you control when the session ends, not pushing the animal until he refuses to do anything and you're both just pissed off and frustrated.

My Border Collie I got at 5 1/2 weeks. She’s 4 this year. And from day one she was off lead over the fields etc. She’s still a puller on the lead but off lead over fields, and down the woods she’s perfect, can’t go off lead unless at those places but that’s exactly what I wanted in a dog. My Cocker Spaniel though was again off lead from day one and doesn’t need a lead anywhere. She walks right beside me, she’s 18 months old now, and no matter where awww are she doesn’t need one on :)

I don't know if she will ever be reliable off leash in a place like town but as this is forbidden I don't need her to learn this. She's 15 months old now and puberty hits hard

We just started working on refreshing our leash manners. The squirrels are coming back out and the weather is nicer for walks so we have to take a step back in training and take some time for reminders of nice leash manners. This video was a great reminder!

brick zaks advice doesnt work. You have to teach a dog leash pressure to understand not to pull by either using a slip lead, check chain, martingale, or a prong collar (should be used when the dog is older).

I LOVE watching your trick training!! The somersault had me so entertained! There are so many ways to teach leash walking and I appreciate that you are open to this. I've seen a lot of comments and first off I would like to apologize for things people say to/about you. I am in favor of the Balanced training community and we get a ton of hate, threats, ect. For using prong collars, e collars, and other tools (yes. We also use food.) I noticed though balanced trainers are not the only ones getting unnecessary threats and negative comments. Just know, people like me may do things slightly different but We don't think you are wrong. Different ideas are what makes the world go round! Please keep up with the Trick Training!! My SD can do a lot of things.. but he definitely can't somersault or jump up on my back!

Hi Zak, I have a really good recipe for treats cut up some carrots to the size you want the treat cover it in peanut butter (smooth) and and put it in the freezer for 20 minutes and enjoy a nice cold treat for the summer

I would love to see more on wait! We wanted to use something like that for when our dog is off leash and gets too far ahead or comes towards a turn or fork in the path! We get her to come back to us for now but then we have to hold a heel until we get to that point so wait seems easier

Practice while on leash even while walking at heel. Teach wait for dog to stop and stand. Drop leash and walk away from dog while maintaining the 'wait' it takes lots of practice. Once they listen while walking at heel off leash should be an easier transition for that command.

I use more the Premack principle to teach leash walking to puppies who are highly distracted by their environment. When they understand that if they walk without pulling they will have what they want in the environment, I introduce the treats with Premack to vary the rewards. Of course, this is my way of working, Zak's is good too.

I don't use treats rewarding for anything else than crate/new skill training but tried once for the walk training, had my pupper focus and walking nicely after allowing him to smell and have a quick recall run. The minute I presented a treat I lost his focus, was very frustrating but it does tell me he prefers toy rewarding so far!

10:28 correct me if I'm wrong but I think when Inertia pulls and she's able to sniff while pulling than she gets rewarded. I would give her a command wich means to her that she has more leash to explore the new area.

Sasi Lol he doesnt know what hes doing. He is literally allowing her to pull and he even said he does. He also uses a harness which makes it easier to pull. The only thing he did right was turning around. He also has taught her that other things are more exciting.

@@bickle8931 I agree. He's good at doing tricks, but he is not good at teaching her proper behaviour. I get that dogs walk faster than humans, but it's up to the humans to set the pace. If I walk in extreme slow motion, my dog matches my speed... And he's also a border collie at only one year old.

Even inertia actually walks very in more current videos. If he can't train dogs... How is he succeeding in this? @@zakgeorge didn't expect that! I knew Alpha was generally chill but I was expecting Venus to rank more challenging than Supernova (couldn't say why). Inertia definitely seems challenging, especially because she's so into dogs and smelling, and it's hard to be more interesting to a dog than that 😂

@@Jackysutarrodetierra my dog loves playing with toys with me above all else. So I would use that as reward/ leverage during walks when other animals are in sight. It's really amazing to see. A tip for (off leash) fetch. Have 2 the same toys so they have the same value. It makes my dog come to me and drop the one he has.

I have a full of energy Golden Doodle...she's always more energetic than me...lol! A dog can understand phrases...when she picks up something in her mouth...I don't know what it is...I say "spit it out" she does understand that command!

I always leash train with a looping figure 8, probably for 10 minutes and then randomly throughout a walk if the dog gets out of line...keeps them interested in you rather than distractions anyway, always practice a lot of sit and stay and down when we walk too, not to mention heel. So much can be incorporated into a 30 minute walk

I've got a new puppy which is spitz and was two months old when o brought him his name is snowball. It's been around 1.5 week since we first met and now he sits when i say and when i say him to ignore the food that IAM giving him, he does. He behaves the best when it's meal time. Hi! What brand of nail grinder is this? I have a shelter dog who seems to have past negative experiences with nail clippers and am looking into grinders/trimmers like this. Do you this like this brand/any extra tips for super sensitive dogs other than taking it extra slow? Its been a week desensitizing the sound of one. He can now come within a foot of the sound and okay handling the feet with hands. but even if I am the one to touch a toy to his feet with positive reinforcement, its too much for him. (total two weeks to trying to get the nails trimmed) just feeling the pressure because all groomers are closed near me. PS love your videos for so many reasons-THANK you for everything :)

Omg the part with the dremmel looks so good. I tried this slow method for months with the nail clippers, brushes, scissors and blower, but it's still a bit of a struggle. I can touch and hold his paws at any time, except for when I need to brush or clip him. He also 'air bites' while brushing or tries to bite the brush. He's 7,5 months old already. Help! Our first floof was so easy with grooming and touching so this is totally new for me. 🥴

The waist belt allows me to use my weight, small though it may be, to hold them back,

Inertia really reminds me of my dog, her name is Raven and she is in mg pfp, my favourite creature on the face of the earth. I love these vids, as I have an interest in dog training. I 'm teaching the dogs "wait" "look for cars" which I repeat a few times and say yes when they look both ways, and then "cross" when its safe to cross the road. We have a bad switchback 4-way stop, and it really works for them and for me, to remind myself not to cross without looking 3 times.

You could try moving a lot faster to keep the focus on forward motion. Then slow it down slowly.

You can also put pottying on cue and only reward it when you ask for it. Start out asking often, but then phase it out to a couple times per walk.

Nothing wrong with leash pressure. You released the pressure the moment she turned which is great. The pressure should be guiding pressure, not aversive pressure. I little negative reinforcement works wonders for loose lead work.

Hi Zak! I've recently started watching you channel and a bunch of you videos this past week and you've really inspired me to start reinforcing training on my dog, and I've also just started to teach him to "sit pretty". He's already got half of it down! I'm trying to wean him off of relying on my arm now. I'm going to be working on how he walks on a leash, and trying to use the method you use for Inertia. Unfortunately, he is pretty much unreliable outside, he only listens to "let's go/come on" and "wait" at the end of a block to cross the street, and "leave it" after a couple times of having to tell him. He doesn't look back at me to check in, or listen to any other commands like "come", "sit", "focus". Definitely going to be a new challenge since he gets so distracted outside, but he learns tricks very well inside, so I am hopeful! The Inertia series is perfect!

Birder Collie Do you think ‘Forward Roll’ and ‘Pretty Sit’ more important lessons than recall, fetch, walking at heel, not jumping up? Inertia has not learnt these exercises very well, if at all. Agility is great exercise, both physical and mental: sitting pretty is hardly a good preparation for future agility training.

Birder Collie I agree with most of what you say but still consider dogs should be well socialised and taught simple, basic behaviours at a very early age. I would prioritise those skills to enhance Inertia’s quality of life and to avoid behavioural issues, some of which she appears to be showing. You obviously got off to a great start training your pup. I can’t say the same about Inertia sadly

hey Zak - about 3 weeks ago we adopted a 9mo old puppy who had been tied out to starve. he was so very scared to go outside in my fenced in yard (had to be carried the first 2 days), still needs a *lot* of encouragement to come in or out of the door on his own. he's starting to come out of his shell (thankfully) now I'd like to get him on a leash. the problem being isn't that he pulls, but he turns into a rock on a rope. i'm trying going to the end of the leash with a treat and calling him to me, but he gets bored of that game quickly. any tips?
