Etsy will demote you if you let your store go idle. I went idle last summer and my view and sales both decreased going into Christmas last year. When I started working in my store almost every day again (uploading products, tweaking titles and pics, etc.), my view count (and sales) started going up again after a few weeks. The absolute worst thing you can do is throw up a huge number of products, then sit back and do nothing while you wait for everyone to beat a path to your door. It's MUCH better to upload one or two products a day and slow-roll the process. Etsy rewards that.

It's a good point and it also is just logical from their perspective to have this rule in place. If you're an idle store, then from their perspective, you might not be around to assist your customers if they actually need help.

Finding a gap in an existing market is so important. You have to start from square 1 - what do people actually want/need. From here you can refine products and designs to fit that want/need better instead of spending time designing products nobody wants in the first place. Great content!

This is so true! Finding a gap in the market can give you some insight into what your competitors aren't doing right and give you the chance to do it better. Focusing on a market gap also helps you make sure you avoid diving into a market that is already oversaturated. After all, a saturated market is often a dead-end for new businesses.

Pricing in the Middle - reminds me of one of my favorite stories in one of my favorite books Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert Cialdini. A brick and mortar store owner had trouble with one line of jewelry. Frustrated she told her employee to put it all at 50% off then went on vacation. Upon her return she was surprised and pleased to learn the jewelry had sold out. Even more surprising was she found the employee misunderstood her instructions and doubled the prices instead of halving them. It seems customers bought when they perceived the items were priced higher they became more desirable.

Sarah, as a marketing graduate with nearly 4 decades of experience, I found your video very informative and useful. Especially your part about price anchoring. For those not doing well on Etsy, I would love to see their products, titles and descriptions, to determine if they failed due to product saturation, poor designs/titles/descriptions, or poor marketing. Signed up to your newsletter too. What else would you do to get more traffic to an Etsy store? Social media and website backlinks, more SEO, and/or advertising (free and paid)?

Absolutely! And even if it did increase sales (which is not what studies or statistics show), what would the point be anyway in making 100 sales if you're making 50 cents profit per sale, whereas you could have made just 20 sales, but made $5 per sale. One is a lot less stressful and nicer than the other, lol!

Thank you Sarah, for this excellent video! ❤ I learn so much each time, and take notes that I keep in a note app in my phone, and in a physical lined notebook w/ sketches, (which I think everyone should consider doing if they can't hold all of your POD and Etsy video notes in their head at once. ) Your videos are of the highest quality, and get straight to the point. I know you must get tired of making some of the top most important points over-and-over again (alongside the new points in your current videos). People seem to either not hear the important points you make in your videos, so miss out, do not take notes so they forget them, do not ever apply them FULLY to their store, or just don't assess their store by at least comparing it to top stores that are similar to what they want to achieve with theirs. Nothing is easy, and I think people also "throw in the towel" too soon because they expect to make money immediately and consistently without putting an appropriate amount of effort in (minimal effort will not cut it, because there is so much competition). As a side note; as far as t-shirt Etsy shop KZbin channels go, I think people who look at those other KZbinrs channel's shops (if they give their shop's name), and see their more reasonable t-shirts prices and high sales, and wonder why we sellers cannot match those prices because we would make no profit, it is because those other KZbinr's Etsy shops that I found PRINT THEIR OWN T-SHIRTS! Yes, after watching some of their content over again (and also interviews of the shop owners with other KZbinrs), they sometimes may briefly mention that they have a "team", and they PRINT THEIR OWN SHIRTS! So they end end with more profit, a faster turn-around time, and can sell at a LOWER PRICE point than the rest of us who strictly rely on P.O.D. To make and ship for us!
@TL-01

I did like 3 designs and wanted to test the waters, after a week I sold one and turned off my listings. Sold it low at $10 shirt and free shipping cuz everyone was doing free shipping. Being persistent. One of more important things. As a person who also has quite a lot in common with web dev and SEO, and also running YT channel for couple years I can clearly say in normal situation it needs time. Yes, you can have luck. But basically that's how all algorithms works. And to remember. Good titles and descriptions are feed for search engines. They work in your favour more if you're more regular on what you do and longer you exist. And there's more of you in web. Of course considering if what you do is interested to anybody :) So. Giving up fast is worst what one can do. Because in normal situation algorithms needs time to push you up. A lot of time. And there's no workaround except luck or patience :D

I got about 500 designs on spread shirt, only made $20. in about 2 years. But I also don't advertise. All of that is organic. I know that's my fault, not anyone's else. I know I just have to start working on advertising. Then I'll know I'll start selling more.
@WholesaleTed
@WholesaleTed Жыл бұрын
If you watch this video though, you'll see the issue isn't not advertising. It's about creating clickable products. Platforms provide you with Test Impressions. The question is whether users actually click on your products, during that time. If they do, you'll keep being shown to others. Rather than upload 500 designs, it is better to spend more time producing less designs that are clickable 🙏

Kia Ora Sarah, thanks for all you stellar advise. I am a kiwi also, so it's super helpful to me. I do have a question around mockups. My understanding is that Etsy has now changed it so that all clothing for example cannot use mockups/lifestyle, only an image of the item by itself, does that sound right? If so this means to follow the rules we can't use pretty attention grabbing pics anymore. Do you have any tips to still stand out?

That's all great for people selling repeat products, but how does it work for vintage selling continuously adding one off pieces from varying categories? E.g. a brooch, a figurine, a bracelet, a Sindy doll, a Disney pin, a cruet set, a vintage eye bath....? You can't un-niche them, you have to be very specific in your description. So where do vintage sellers fit into the algorithm? Thank you in advance for any advice 👍🏻
@WholesaleTed
@WholesaleTed Жыл бұрын
That is a good question! I'll be upfront with you: selling one-off designs isn't my specialty. However, a lot of the same principles apply. If you do niche down into specific types of item sourcing, it will become much easier for Etsy to build a customer profile for you. So if you niched down into say, sourcing vintage toys, then overtime Etsy's algorithm can gather more data on what customers match well with your store, and then show your store to them.
@bellblue5527
@bellblue5527 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the honest reply Sarah. Trouble is we have thousands of items of stock in multiple categories, niche-ing down is just not an option. Side question Etsy seemed to be flooded with stores reselling tat from places like Temu claiming its handmade and or vintage. How does the algorithm not pick up on these resellers? I feel so bad for buyers being told it's a "vintage moon brooch" selling it for $70 when it's mass made and sells on Temu for $3. It's so disheartening for genuine vintage and handmade sellers especially when the customers are being ripped off. Any thoughts?

I can't see your store, so I can't say why exactly it is, but users are not clicking on your products when they get Test Impressions. So the question I'd recommend people ask themselves in this situation is: 1) Could it be that my products aren't clickable. Are they not good enough or interesting looking enough to get a click? 2) Could it be that I haven't given Etsy's algorithm enough information about my products to put them in front of the right customer? 3) If you are getting some clicks, could it be that you haven't filled out your store details, and your store looks unprofessional and unbranded? 4) Or maybe, is it a combination of multiple of these - or even all of them?

Sarah, does Australia have a great audience for POD? I've been looking into doing something for Australia Day, or just some things built around the culture itself.

Hi , love your content been watching you for yrs now. I own an Etsy store from Canada , its a POD t-shirts ,hoodies store, but the POD is done in the states. When a Canadian buyer buys a t-shirts I was making $3 after Esty fees and other costs, I had free shipping but added $7 shipping so now I am making about $10 profit, but I have to sell my t-shirts for $42( with shipping included in that price). Does that sound like its too high of a price ?

Follow up , should I lower that price and make a smaller profit but maybe more sales

That low cost is only the lowest cost out of many in that listing. I consider it clickbait as most of them are done on purpose.

So you're saying the only way to succeed on Esty is if you're a graphic artist? So I might as well not start a Esty store, becomes as with plants I have a brown thumb when it comes to art. Saying that one guys 500 designs were of poor quality I thought was kinda a low shot. I would have recommended that you had reached out to him and analyzed his store first, then made recommendations to how he could improve.
@WholesaleTed
@WholesaleTed Жыл бұрын
I am surprised you got that as your takeaway because I say the direct opposite! I say at 0:40 I say that I created my designs with Canva & Midjourney. And at 8:00 I show an example of a great design that is simply a free photo that they downloaded online. I directly talked about beginner-friendly ways to turn design ideas into reality, without being a graphic designer. That is why I am curious why you took away from this video that you need to be a graphic designer, I would like to know why if you would share it with me, so I won't confuse anyone in the future. 🙏 In terms of my critique of him, I understand your perspective, even if I disagree it was wrong to say it. It was harsh but it is honest and I think it is an important skill to be able to honestly step back and look bluntly at our stores/products if we want to improve! 🙏

Sarah, I am also in NZ. Scared to use Etsy again, in the past I did not have to give all my details and now I have to give - credit card no., drivers licence with signature, or passport, bank a/c number and full name. That means they have all of my identity (including signature) - this is scary - did you have to do all of this? For this reason I have not gone forward.
@WholesaleTed
@WholesaleTed Жыл бұрын
Yes, I did have to prove my identity, however it is an important legal requirement that Etsy collects this, because if they didn't and you were to scam people, then Etsy needs to know who you are to then report you to authorities. Etsy has their own payment processor, and any payment processor is at risk at being used for crime, and so they therefore have to collect this information. Because I do understand the reason why it is required, I therefore personally don't mind it, as I have witnessed first hand just how many scammers are thieves there are online, so I do support anything that minimizes innocent people having their money stolen 🙏

That is a good question. Honestly, list-style content tends to convert really well for that business style. Working on creating great list blogs that either promote your own products, or affiliate products. Those sorts of blog posts work well with Pinterest too.

Yet i cannot get used to your english I have to admit that the way you think about these things are very interesting . USA/Canadian youtubers says these other way OR exactly the opposite. They rather follow working schemas and push harder while you are searching for the opporunities and proofs of marketing theories. I admit this is more creative and offensive which strategy may rather lead to success. (I have just watched Clone wars animated series where jedis taught clones to think creative, while 'being engineered' on Kamino the clones just had to follow orders headlessly. Unexpected efficiency happent.)
