While I was watching this, tears started to well up in my eyes at the Grooming part. When I was 5, I was sexually abused by a family member. They acted like they cared about me and they always were very nice to me, but when we were alone, he started to sexually harass me. I didn't know what to do and I was so scared so I just let it happen. I'm so glad someone like you made a video because of this and thank you so much for spreading awareness on this issue. I think age is just a number depending on how old you are. Like if you’re 10 years apart but you’re 40 and your partner is 50 I think that’s ok because you’re both adults and you’re capable of making choices and you know how to consent. But if you’re 10 and your partner is 20 then that’s an issue.

When people say “age is just a number” it’s to uplift older men and women who feel like they’ll never find love because of their age, it’s NOT to valid pedophiles. My parents are 20 years apart, my dad was 50-ish when she was 23-ish. The reason he was dating was because his ex-wife emotionally abused him for years, and he was just now looking for love again. That’s a situation where age is just a number. Where it’s an older person who’s still able to find love despite not being in the “socially correct” age range.

A year ago I watched this video. A year ago I told my parents. A year ago I was 12 and couldn't tell that the 17 year old was grooming me. I couldn't tell. Please, if you are in a situation like this, please, tell someone you trust.(not them) and get somewhere you feel safe and comfortable. For me nothing big happened, no nudes, just dating during the pandemic, which I am thankful for so we couldn't get closer. I see what he was doing now, and I fucking hate him so much for it. I remember the threatened suicides, I remember watching this and my first thoughts were "he would never do that. I trust him!" I remember being scared but him gaslighting me telling me I wasn't. I remember him breaking my boundaries, I remember everything. And I hate it. Please reach out if you don't see the red flags. And illy, thank you for spreading awareness about this topic, not many people do. And if it wasn't for you, I would still be with him, I would still be scared, no, terrified. Thank you, so so much.

I was in a relationship with a guy who lives in another country. He was 18 and I was 14 when we started dating. Watching this video, I realize how much our stories are alike and how wrong it was. The gaslichting, threatening with suicide.. When I had a friend who I met online and would also threaten and not reply for hours because I didn’t reply it absolutely killed me. I was 11 and I was in a fandom being a usual simp and a coo went of a server of people who I thought were like me. One of them was my best friend and the one who kept threatening shook me so much. I’m older now tho but what happened was crazy but now that I’ve watched this I know it’s not my fault. They would demand attention but I managed to unfriend them and recommend a therapist or something and it helped them. I cut ties with the server because they would blame me and yeah.

Making online friends can be great but it’s also important to be aware of the dangers. If you feel like you’re in a bad situation don’t be afraid to tell your parents. I'll give you some advice as someone who spent a lot of their teenage years online: as soon as someone starts to threaten their life or yours in order to get you to do something for them, TELL YOUR PARENTS. They'll know what to do. If you have particularly bad parents, tell another trusted adult or your friends. Go private on everything, change your username and passwords on everything, and block the account making threats. If you still feel unsafe with all that, delete the account(s) asap. If you truly feel your life or someone else's is in danger, call an emergency number to report the person.

This.... opened my eyes about a lot of things I let slide in my own abusive relationship. I was by no means a child, but it was my first relationship ever. So by experience standards with dating, I was horribly naive. Is there a term like grooming but for adults? Because that’s what he did to me. He made me believe all these horrible things he did was normal and that I NEEDED him and that he needed me and if I left it would result in tragedy... If I didn’t have sex with him, he’s threaten to purge. He had an eating disorder I was helping him with. And if I wasn’t sexual with him, he’d threaten me with his own safety, Maki g me believe that if I wasn’t sexual with him even if I didn’t want to be, I was responsible for his health and that if I wasn’t sexual it was my fault if he got worse. I don’t know what to call this. Sexual abuse? Grooming? But I didn’t even consider the fact that I may have had Stockholm syndrome. I’m...going to talk to my therapist about this.

In the UK they call it coercive control. It tends to be very calculated, each step designed to lower self esteem and increase dependence on the abuser. You can get 4-5 years for it if proven. A colloquial term for the "Stockholme Syndrome" that these abused women is known as Battered Wife Syndrome (BWS), it's more associated with the PTSD that comes after (feeling like they're everywhere, that you need to come back to them when you don't etc.) But it has gained more traction in more official places recently as a condition in its own right.

I think the most important thing is not to control them or helicopter parent them, but to educate them and help them understand the consequences and let them know that no matter what you love them. Let them know that if something like this were to happen you’re there to protect them and there’s always a way to get out.

(I'm a girl, despite my username.) When I was around 12 or 13, I used to play an online game about building cities and an army and attacking others. We could join clans with others in our area to better defend ourselves and each clan had a group forum. Anyway, so I joined a clan and this guy messaged me, we started talking, he seemed nice. After a couple months, he asked for my email because "his internet connection was slow" and loading the game to see my messages took a long time. So I did, we continued talking, he called me his internet girlfriend, he'd say he'd like to meet me (but he lived in a different country) and one day he asked for a photo of me. He sent me one of his and he was a guy probably around 30, it all suddenly felt very creepy but I didn't really stop to think about why it felt like that. Before then I used the internet mostly to look at pictures of Inuyasha, so there were things I still didn't know how to do online. I asked my mum how to attach a photo to an email, she came over to help me and she read his latest email. She told me she didn't want me talking to him or sending him any photos and that put an end to the thing. When I didn't answer him, he found me on facebook and started harrassing me through there, but my mum telling me not to talk to him made me take the iniciative to block him. Looking back, I'm really really glad my mum saw because that wasn't even the creepiest email he'd sent, I don't know what would've happened but I know I was naive, innocent and too young to know about what some people want from kids. He would've sucked me in easily and manipulated me into who knows what. You can't blame kids for finding themselves in these situations. There's an age of consent for a reason. You see... when my sis was 7 and she started going to school, she caught me watching Elfen Lied (yes, THAT anime), and I dared to take responsibility for watching it again with her and translate every single line of it for her. After each torturous episode we discussed what happened and why. The next summer we were at "the" lake (like, a BIG lake) with a family friend and he - completely naively, no doubt about that - wanted to tease my sis a bit about going topless by saying he'd pinch her nipples. My sis jumped away, laughed him in the face and shouted: "XY, YOU'RE A PEDOPHILE!" and hopped along as a 20 feet circle around us went dead silent and staring in awe... and then, in spite of my embarrassment I was the proudest in my life, because I knew I did the right thing, since: 1) My sister noticed the inappropriate aspect of the situation 2) She pointed it out vocally without a second thought 3) She didn't experience it as a reason for shame or a form of victimization or trauma In my opinion a parent's job is to prepare their children for life, not to merely protect them from it. Wisdom is a weapon. You must pass it on. This video is valuable in its own right, because your experience is truly noxious. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve been sexually abused by my own father but police say I don’t have proof on it even though my brothers and mom told all of the same stories. When I was 13, I met someone at a comic con, who was cosplaying from the same thing as me. They were 19, and they effectively groomed me, found me online, flirting with me, giving me nicknames and calling me their girlfriend. They offered to buy me presents, and talked about coming to my house. I was lucky, because I got bored with them without really realising how horrible they were being, and the sexual things they were implying. They were horrible and blocked me, calling me many horrible words- but I kinda forgot about it. Every so often I remember it and it makes me shudder. I never realised their intentions, and what they were trying to make me do. I’m incredibly lucky I managed to get out of it. The creepy thing is that the characters we were cosplaying were Eren, and Levi from attack on Titan. I was Eren. An underage teenager, and an adult man, who people ship. Urgh.

In 2018 when I was 14, I was groomed by a man who was 28. A few weeks into it I grew emotionally strained from that relationship and ended up telling my teacher about it. I had no idea how manipulated and brainwashed I was, so the teacher told me to look up stories of other children who went through the same thing as I did, what happened to them, etc. I was busy that afternoon, so I did a quick search and downloaded all the videos, storytimes, and documentaries I found about child grooming... this being one of them. That weekend was my 15th birthday, and my parents (who knew what was going on) tried to cheer me up with a long road trip. They didn't understand that I wasn't ready to be cheered up, so I was unintentially left alone to deal with my emotions while they enjoyed the vacation. The playlist I'd saved was my only outlet. This was one of the stories that stuck with me the most, and I was captivated. It helped motivate me to leave this individual, something I'm still thankful for. I'll never forget the feeling I had, listening to the audio for the first time while staring out the car window. I was lucky. I ran into so many close calls in which I narrowly escaped being lured, enticed, and raped. I had adults in my life who I could trust. If I stayed any longer, the anguish this relationship already caused me would have been much worse, and it still affects me and my decision making at 17. I come back to this video every once in a blue moon and whenever I watch it, I feel grateful and loved. Illy, you helped a little girl dodge a bullet. Thank you. ❤
