Marina you are amazing! When I am in a bad mood or stressed I go and watch your videos :) And I agree with the thing that money makes life easier! I remember the days when I studied at the law school... students who had money could afford nice apartments, cars, MacBooks, they could afford Oxford books and of course, had much more time for studying. And all of this not only about comfort but the time - the most precious thing we all have. Other students had to spend much more time getting to school on "marshrutka", having a part-time job to earn money for a living. When I visited Canada and lived in a luxury hotel, was talking with eminent and successful people, I promised myself to do everything to be on that level all the time and I started looking for all opportunities that bring me to my dream and goals :) P.S. You are an inspiration for me! I hope one day I will meet you in the Silicon Valley. Greetings from Ukraine!

I think we need to find a nice balance. Yes - we need to invest into better equipment (could be a MacBook), time (staying at a luxury hotel), and so forth, but we also don't need to spend extra money into what is not beneficial to our growth. It's all about the right price, right use, and of course the best value.

I've worked in a 5 star hotel. I honestly get it. It makes sense really. At some point trading time for being cheap stops working. Having a pool in the hotel rather than taking a 5 minutes bus makes a difference. Besides, 5 star hotels are basically made for people like you. They are a home away from home, a place where you can do work. You must become a member at a hotel chain you like. The benefits are pretty good for repeat users.

nowadays even Chinese are making debt "fashionable". Recipe for disaster if you think you must have debt to make it. Eventually either that hamster wheel stops or they burn themselves out spinning it. Fortunately, we see a departure from this mindless "thinking" in America (except for places like BayArea, NYC, Miami) but most of the world China, Russia... this hamster wheel mentality is very much there.

I don't think that it's a good idea to spend more than you can afford in order to seek motivation to do better. I wonder how many people have grown their businesses following this theory; because there seems to be none. People work hard, encounter failures, learn, get back up, work even harder in order to succeed. They don't just go on a crazy shopping spree so that they can earn more and do even more crazier things the next day. One should always spend according to one's abilities and should focus on investing rather than spending.

Definitely. I feel providing better service instead of more service is the right way. And it is a common saying that " it costs money to make money" we can always earn more. We cant keep everything we make. So just save your 10% ALWAYS. Get your seperate purse with the 3 months bills covered, and reinvest. Until you feel that you created so much wealth where if the investment fails, you wouldn't be upset. That is what my plan is. I know I can do that, Now I want to know how to get started, while being homeless.

You are 100% correct about your theory of having something that you want being just above your present status, because that gives you that extra push to try harder to achieve that goal. I'm retired now, but in the few years out of law School, I decided that I had to have the top of the line Porsche. From that moment, it only took me 18 months to buy with cash the top of the line Porsche, which I ordered in the exact color combination which I wanted...I loved that car. After that, I would look from nice guns which I wanted to purchase. That made me work harder, and every Saturday, I would drive down to my favorite gun store, and usually either buy, or order a new gun. Your theory is correct.

Hi Marina, So, I took my first TOEFL test back in 2013. It was the PBT one, and I scored 560. Although it was a nice score, I didn't get to travel and study in the US because my mom couldn't afford the costs (she's a single mom, and has to provide for 4 children). Four years later, thanks to an government scholarship, I've finished my undergraduate studies in my home country (Cape Verde), and would like to pursue my dream of studying in the US again. My goal is to pursue a Master's Degree in my field (Computer Science and Engineering). I've already researched a few universities. I'm still not able to afford the cost, but now I have more knowledge and motivation to proceed. I'm aiming for an assistantship that can cover my tuition and costs while living on campus. Your videos have been helping me a lot in getting to know the jargons and procedures involved in the whole process. Keep up the good work that you're doing! I feel that I'm more mature and experienced this time around. So I would really appreciate if you had any advice for me. Best regards, Chris

If you are applying to an American university, try contacting the admissions office for advice on how to apply for grants, loans and scholarships. It is too in-depth to discuss here, but all universities have guidance counselors who can assist. Also, don't focus on just the big name universities. Many of our smaller colleges and universities offer the same education as the big name schools, but much cheaper in cost, and with the same experiences. For foreign born students, many of the schools have multi-cultural centers to assist the new students to life at American universities and life in America. Good luck.

Spending more than you can afford is a great advice although many people have many doubts about it. We can not deny that it will get you into big debts sometimes. But let's take a look at its benefits. Why do you spend a whole of your life on struggling at work ? Actually for money. And when you have some special occasions to off to a new country to blow your mind up, it is better for you to spend money on our accomodation alongside with your visiting. Otherwise, do you want to be a victim for the look of a thief ? Anyway, sometimes spend money on luxury things can also help you perceive the value of your money and it will absolutely a great motivation to help us make more or at least, you deserve to live like a king some days ( after a long time of tiredness )

I'm not proud to admit that I've overspent on these things that got me not broke but pretty much semi broke. I can see how telling someone “spend less than you earn” can be unhelpful advice if you’re trying to get that person to be smarter with money, much like saying to someone who’s overweight that losing weight is simply a matter of “calories in versus calories out.” However, I never really saw it as advice but rather as a financial truth or rule, much like the power of compounding-basics everyone should know

I think your amazing if you can see that expensive room when your eyes are shut sleeping. I spent 9 years traveling and to be honest the most important thing about any room is ask your self is it safe as I said you don't see the room you paid a fortune for very long as the purpose of the room is for you to sleep in. Most people arrive at there hotel drop there cases off take a shower then hit the town. Returning to your room most people go straight to bed wake up shower then check out. So myself l slept in the cheapest room I could find saving a small fortune to where you stayed in a 5 star hotel and wasted a fortune on an unesesery item. Let me give you some good advice. There are two rules in business rule one never waste money, rule 2, NEVER FORGET RULE ONE

Everyone can reflect the meaning of this theory differently. Basically, spending more so you can earn more is about growth, development and circulation of your business you are making. By this concept i mean, if you are spending bunches of money in order to make your customer service easier and comfortable. So that people would get more attracted because of your service you are providing for them. Which allows you to have more income than the way you are making your outcome. Unless, it is not about spending money for a five star hotel, luxury clothes nor fancy food your eating. As long as you are making benefit for your business, you will earn hellaway much more.

I am saying it, bc some people would just spend, spend and spend money and forget about being creative and about delivering value to the world.

I don't necessarily agree with everything she said but I kinda get it. Personally, I am still a student but I would like one day to not have to care about prices and stuff because I will know I can afford it. Of course money is not what counts but for me the comfort that money can provide definitely motivates me.

The money theory does work. My friend hás spent more money than she usually would on herself and met a lot of people who helped her become sucessful. However, there hás to be a skill or a goal behind it.

having more money, achieving more goals. You might asking why? since I can achieve my goal by money. ( study one of the University in the USA)

Spending (in this case) is not about splurging. I think it is about quality and value going forward (investing...). That is difficult because most things depreciate (unless you have them for a long time and they become rare). It's hard when a person is young to think in terms of investing over time, "n'est pas"???

I do agree with the theory. My spending habit made me work even harder to earn more and more which boost my skills and increased my horizon of knowledge making a chain reaction.

In some way I’m agree, i love everything nice in life. Simple example, once you use good gadgets you won’t down grade. Only up grade. Same with every thing else in life, that can be a motivation for sure. However, you can’t always stay in nice hotel. For example I’m running spa products company and many time in my business trip i never mind to stay in 3 star hotel if they are closer to the industrial area so i can be near to the factory we are visiting or our next client. But on the other occasion such as attending exhibitions which normally located on more prestigious area i would be more than happy taking 5 star hotel as long as they are super close to the exhibition. Depan on the goals really. But she also mention that we build business to make life better. That also huge motivation. We make sure we do our best in our end so we can only grow and hire more people. You never know how much you can change people’s live indirectly.

In my opinion free time is more important than money. I like to have a lot of free time to travel, to read, to see movies, to do sports,to talk with my friends.
