Under Mussolini, Italy would join WWII on the Axis side on June 10th, 1940. Claiming he had 'eight million bayonets' ready to march on his command, the reality was rather less glamorous for the common Italian soldier! READ MORE:

To the very gates of Stalingrad, the burning sands of North Africa and the mountainous terrain of Italy itself, the Italian soldier would meet almost all the nations of Allied forces in battle until September 1943 when Italy would finally capitulate. With the collapse of Italy as a military power, German forces would seize swathes of territory and prisoners, while many Italian soldiers would sign up with the Allies in order to take the fight to their former allies. The average Italian soldier never possessed Il Duce's dreams of empire, and even fascism was far from universal within their ranks. When at last the chance came to save Italy from the spectre of foreign Nazi rule, the hard-pressed people of Italy would seize the opportunity.

I'm so glad you've started doing Operation Husky stuff. My Great Grandfather was at Tunisia, Sicily and Italy all the way through to Montecassino and I find that's one of the lesser covered parts of the war. I've also had a fondness and preference for the quirkier, slightly-less-good equipment of the Italians and early-mid war British.

The Italian campaign is such a widely overlooked part of WWII and it's bizarre to me that it doesn't get as much coverage. I suppose Operation Overlord is seen as the beginning of the end, but Italy had combatants from around the whole world in one place trying to tackle the 'soft underbelly' of Europe. The mid-war gear can be a lot of fun to paint, too!

Thanks for the video. I started a bolt action Italian army and used your video to paint it, it helped massively. I have always been interested in the Italians during ww2. While they do have bad reputation they did have a couple good things, the semoventa and the veltro fighter come to mind. "The Germany solider impressed the world. But the Italian Bersaglieri impressed the German solider" Erwin Rommel

Great video. Real question: has there ever been an episode of How I Paint Things that isn’t “very special?” I hope not!

This was a neat choice in figures and as always, excellent work! I had not thought of painting WWII Italian Army figures in the green uniform but it really looks good and is quite an interesting change from the sand colored versions. Thanks for sharing this as I always learn something new from you.

Please do! They're lovely miniatures, really. I've found them a fraction more slight and slender than the usual Warlord figures; they'd not look like giants when compared to the Perry metals, I think.

What did you use for tufts? Also, great tutorial! Definitely gonna use this for my upcoming plastic Italian project!
@SonicSledgehammerStudio
@SonicSledgehammerStudio 3 жыл бұрын
These tufts are the Middenheim Tufts from GW. There's a couple of different colours in their range which are actually pretty useful; something they've got going for them over some other ranges if they've got a few really tiny tufts on each sheet which are neat for little spot details.

too much green. This color has been used in the post war italian army but during the war we had the grey-green

If you've got any links to sources or printed material I'm all ears, but I was working from three separate sources that all said the woolen uniform was olive green. There's a cotton uniform which would have been much more grey, but it's a different, lighter fabric.
