This needs a HUGE disclaimer. Know your soil before attempting this or risk serious damage to your body. Erin has that new fluffy topsoil onto a sandy soil base. I did this several years ago in our new construction backyard (clay). I drilled about 1000 1 1/4" holes and filled them with compost. If you have heavy clay with rocks or debris understand that those soils will laugh at your cordless drill. I had to buy a 10 amp corded drill. Also note that that when you hit this hard debris in the soil your drill will STOP - I snapped 2 drill bits in half. I also wore long heavy braces (like for carpal tunnel) when doing this. You can rip ligaments from bone and snap tendons if you are not careful. Know your soil before destroying your wrists. This can also be very tough on your shoulders and is a back killer. So please be careful before thinking this will work easily for anyone anywhere.

Agree! Know your soil and upper body strength. Get an auger with the side bracing arm. A three inch can take you out if you hit rocks or clay.

Digging in clay is much easier when it’s deep soaked. I’ve still got shrubs to put in and I’ve realized I’ll have to soak & dig, soak & dig, soak & dig to get them into my dried out rocky under soil.

Power Planter Augers are the best!!! I have 3"x28", 3" x 36", 5"x28" and just purchased 4"x36" Power Planter made that one special for me. If purchasing an Auger, 36" is way better for your back. I have drilled through clay, gravel, tree roots and loam soil. Be sure to go slow if tough soil. but it will do it. I don't use a shovel anymore! Mix compost, potting soil, dig trenches, etc. Thnak you Greg and Johnny of Power Planter!

When we purchased our house 5 years ago, we planted 39 Leyland cypress around the perimeter. And we had to use a pick axe and a digging iron to make holes. We have shale and clay soil, which is not much of the soil at all. Next year, I wanted to plant bulbs and started to look around for tools that would my job easier, because I couldn't dig my spade in more than 2", the rest would be shale. I came across a Powerr Planter auger 2"x7", and I immediately knew that this is what I need. I used it ever since. Planted pretty much everything with it, even bigger plants, just make several holes and rock it. Much easier to scoop out the shale with a little bit of dirt. Also, I was implementing a "no dig" method. Cardboard and several inches of hardwood mulch on the top. Planted smaller plants right on the top of the cardboard with good soil or compost to set the plant in. Everything is thriving, thank God. I also amend every planting space with Espoma products, and results are great. Last year I planted 1,000 bulbs, spring and summer, using Power Planter auger , stil that same 2"x7". I used it so much that most of the paint is gone,lol. This year, I got myself a mother's day present and got a dril and 3"x30" auger with a heavy duty tip from Power Planter. I am super happy with it and very greatful for such an awesome auger bit. Made my gardening so much more enjoyable and it's looking beautiful.

I LOVE my power Planter; it is so much easier for a senior to handle than tillers and shovels! So fast! Disturbs the soil very little while getting the work done. I am just about to order a bigger one! But I did want to caution you about planting WILLOWS (also dogwoods and other water-seeking shrubs and trees) near septic fields, field drainage tiles, wells, etc. Last year we had to have two banks of curly willows, plus dogwoods yanked out of our wet spot at the lowest point on our farm. The aggressive roots had penetrated the field tile and was causing us (and neighboring farmers) horrible drainage problems. The lack of drainage stopped water flow thru our large garden and clear up to the house! It made our acreage spongey wet and it could not be mowed or farmed. Neighboring fields contributed their runoff - it was a mess and costly to correct. Reconsider that willow placement, PLEASE!

TOTALLY agree with you on the Power Planter. Have property in zone 8 with wonderful clay! After digging a couple holes, I was ready to give up. Then I found the Power Planter. It is NOT a wimpy drill. It is a 60 V drill. It is a professional drill. Can be used to stir concrete. Neither is it cheap. BUT, for me it is completely worth the money. My husband has used it to dig holes for 4x4's and 2 x 4's. My son-in-law is getting ready to build a hen house. He has all sorts of tools. He saw me plant over 200 daffodil bulbs with the Power Planter. He has asked to borrow my Power Planter! I purchased the package with the 3 augers, 60V drill, 3 batteries & charger. I'm working on brand new flower beds on over 2 acres. Definitely worth the money. Saves so much time! How much is YOUR time worth??

I have a tip. I’m in the Texas hill country. We are hot,dry, and very windy. When I’m ready to do several plantings, I carry a small kids pool to my planting location. I fill it up with water and sit all my plants in it. Then I get all my tools together that I may need to plant. By the time my hole is dug and additions are added, my plants are nice and wet and ready to go!

Can’t imagine planting without my auger; it was a game changer for me. I just have the 3” and use it for everything that needs planted. If I need a larger hole, I just drill 3 holes and then swirl around & combine them together OR just get out my shovel to start a larger hole, give a couple chops and then let that auger rip it up and enlarge the hole. Once you use a plant auger, you’ll never plant again without it. Just remember to use both hands always, wear garden gloves with grips and hold on tight, and use recommended low drill speed for safety - and only, only ever buy a steel auger - none of that crap that’s out there. Steel won’t break.

How about planting the lilac rose with nepeta, agastache and salvia? The other benefit of planting the rose with those plants is that those plants help deter rodents, deer and some bugs. I remember Middle Sized garden saying that roses are most often underplanted with salvia in the UK for the forementioned reasons.

I call mine the vertical rototiller. Wish I could afford the larger drill and auger, but I make due with my 3". I just route the holes. I have jerked my wrist around several times, and wish the smaller drill came with the e-clutch. I have learned to place the drill between my legs to keep it from jerking. All, in all, I love my auger. Oh, I find with the 3 inch in my heavy Virginia clay soil that the regular auger, not the one with the heavy duty tip, actually works better. The heavy duty tip is as wide as the auger, and much thicker so it doesn't want to enter the clay as easy as the regular thinner auger head. Great video.

I luv the Power Planter products and have used their small auger (3" x 24") for a few years. When I decided to put in a perennial flowering border along our fence and rip out large existing plants to recreate our front planting beds, I invested in a Landworks Earth Auger....best decision ever! The earth auger has a large power head with two handles, hand controls for foward/reverse, and it won't spin out of control when it hits a large rock (this theory has been well tested). Our soil is packed clay and some areas are filled with rocks...I planted 17 flowering perennials yesterday in less than two hours, and that included a couple breaks to hydrate myself and the plants 😊

I got the 60v drill for Christmas, and the 8” auger for my birthday and I am in love! Total game changer. I have very heavy clay soil and I don’t consider myself that strong. The drill has an e clutch system that stops when it encounters resistance that would make it spin so it’s much safer than it would be otherwise. Tons of planting to do in the garden and with the auger I get it done in a quarter of the time! Definitely an investment cost wise, but worth it for those of us that always buy way more than necessary. 😛 Glad you’re enjoying yours too Erin!

Ok, so don’t hate me people….but I have the easiest soil to dig in with just a shovel. I have pure sand soil here in the Sandhills of NC, it’s just like digging at the beach. Super easy. With how expensive it is to get the proper drill and augers, I just haven’t bothered for my own yard. BUT, I did invest in one for my moms yard. I help her a lot because she can’t get out there like she used to. She has red clay, and it’s totally worth it there!! Erin you’re so right, it’s definitely worth the investment if you have hard soil. My aging back appreciates the help 😂

@@oxwoman8 yep, I know exactly what you mean. My mom actually lives up in Virginia and her red clay is brutal, probably the same as yours. I stumble upon tiny pockets of red clay every now and then, but it’s rare. But go an hour north or east, more towards your are and it’s nothing but that red clay. I know my sand is horrible for holding water, but I’d rather amend that than have to dig in that red clay lol. I do not envy y’all(until the droughts come, then I’m over here fighting to keep my stuff alive 😂😂)

@@ritasicari7518 same! And Jim Putnam and Wyse Guide…they have amazing soil. Jim started with red clay but now he has just gorgeous soil, and Wyse guide is just the luckiest guy ever…his soil is naturally just perfect. My sand is easy to dig in, but it doesn’t retain water AT ALL. I do have to amend it heavily, but it is incredibly easy to dig in lol
@oxwoman8
@oxwoman8 2 жыл бұрын
@@BettyWhiteJr yeah, the water just flows away in that Sandy soil. In clay soil we have to be careful when digging that we don't create the "bathtub effect". If you dig a hole and don't amend what you put back in it's like planting into a terra cotta pot with no drainage hole. The plant will drown. Thus why I use the compost and pine fines.

I love my 3" Power Planter and was thinking of adding the 5" to my arsenal. Thank you for the discount. I have very rocky soil, plenty of old tree roots and various other obstacles. I am 69 and not that strong. My technique is to use very short bursts so if I hit an obstacle the drill just doesn't have that far to kick. I have many areas with multiple layers of old compacted mulch. The augur is very useful to loosen the layers up so I can move the material with a spade and cut out the old landscape fabric. I then use the augur to mix the decomposed mulch into whatever is under it: clay, sand, whatever the builder used to fill in the lot. Not to make a plug here (haha), but when I had a problem as a newbie using the drill a young man at Power Planter very kindly and patiently helped me.

It is amazing! I think I even found myself buying new plants just so I could use my new "toy" to plant them! My only regret is that I didn't invest in the longer (28") one because I still have to bend over with my shorter one. I would love to be able to use an auger in my terrible soil that leans toward hardpan, but when we started out from scratch 15 years ago, we had a terrible gopher problem. So we lined our entire 70 by 70 ft. garden with chicken wire then built low raised beds that we filled with compost and top soil to plant in. So now any time we dig a hole, we're likely to run into the chicken wire barrier. It has reduced the gopher population though along with a consistent trapping program and 4 formerly feral cats that adopted us and are good hunters. We live on 17 acres so there are plenty of rodents to keep them busy.😊

I love the IDEA of the auger! I have one too. It's a great tool IF you don't have rocks & tree roots in your soil. Ours is clay with LOTS of rocks of all sizes, with the majority of rock sizes about the size of a softball - except they're mostly flat. And when the auger catches the side of one of those rocks, the rocks don't budge, so the auger REALLY throws that drill & your forearms & wrists a curve ball. We gave it the old college try! But... My hubs now refuses to use it. And he has VERY strong arms, wrists, and hands. He just prefers them to stay unbroken! So until my soil is perfectly perfect, and that auger can be used like a hot knife thru butter, then the poor lonely auger will not see the light of day. Which makes me a lil' sad 😪

@@gregn5675 hi, yes, he did do that. And you're right! It's necessary!! And you've got to learn to just let go of the drill when you feel it hitting big resistance too. There's just A LOT of rocks here... We just have very difficult soil for digging. (Central Tx, limestone country, there's a limestone quarry down the road.) The garden fork, and a tire iron, is what works best for our rocky soil. And we end up building stone fences out of all the big rocks! (or should I say boulders...) Which I love! But each time I see people using augers & their soil is so smooth & buttery, I do get a bit of fluffy soil envy!! Someday I WILL have places that are auger worthy... someday...

This was so helpful. I've wanted one of these for a while now, but didn't buy because I'm afraid I'll break my wrist (New England rocky and root-filled soil). Now I know I can get one to stir my compost piles. And slowly, gingerly, use it to plant. Buying/choosing tips and that bucket soaking tip are icing on the cake!

Another great tool I’ve discovered is the off brand sawzall I bought. It’s great for cutting through roots and limbs. I have a drill but haven’t tried digging with it yet. I always wished shovels had motors lol.

Hi, I have used the small 3" and love it. Thinking of investing in the 5" this year and then the larger next year. Thanks for the info and uses. I love the idea of using it in my compost and had never thought of that. Thanks again.

it seems that last year was the start of the Augers for Planting . I saw them first on Garden Answers and invested in one and love it. My only regret is that I didn't get the longer one. Erin is correct - get one that you can stand with while you 'aug'

Erin thank you for putting me into the power planter 3”x24” auger last fall. I ordered it immediately after watching your video. 400 tulip bulbs arrived in the mail and my husband groaned…. The next day the auger arrived. No complaining no strange noises from the peanut gallery 😂😂😂. Tossing around the idea of getting another but can’t decide between the 5” and 7” because I don’t want to purchase another drill. Also thanks for the coupon code!

I just bought a 5” auger! Here on Cape Cod we have sandy soil with no rocks. I used a 3” auger to plant 350 bulbs this past fall. I’m looking forward to planting bulbs in bulk and quart sized plants. My Hungarian poppies are coming up using your winter seeding method. You channel is an excellent resource even though our zone is 7A.

I got an auger 3 years ago and when it bent in our hard clay soil, I researched and found the PowerPlanter brand and have used their 3" auger ever since, especially for planting hundreds of bulbs in each fall. I love it but it does have a kick when it hits a rock. I do wish now I had gotten a longer auger because I'm tired of bending over to drill the holes. Thanks for the discount code! I think I'll use it to get a longer one. I just want to add that the quality of PowerPlanter augers is unsurpassed and they are made here in the USA!

I got the big daddy stud and joist drill with the 3,5 and 9 inch power planter augers for my birthday in 2020. Yep I wish I’d known about it when we started landscaping our backyard in 2019, we have very hard clay soil. What a difference it has made, I planted 12 1 gallon Cats Pajamas cat mint yesterday in 30 minutes. 😎

i couldn’t have planted all that i have the last few years without my augers, i would suggest trying the handle on the big drill on the side as it makes it easier to control than the T. My right angle drill has an auto brake if it hits something but it is so heavy.

I have a small auger that I use to plant in the flower beds. I can definitely see the value in getting a larger one if you’re doing a lot of large plants or small trees. Thanks for showing how to use it.

The pre soak idea with the bucket is brilliant,thanks for that tip. I’ll be using that today as I am finally planting today -PNW weather has been cold and wet this spring but I think we may have turned a corner. I’ve tried a drill for bulb planting but with heavy clay it was a challenge and I went back to a good old shovel.

Got my 1st auger just this month. Haven't used it for planting yet--will this weekend/next week--but dug a deep hole for a rustic fence post in our heavy VA clay. GAME CHANGER!!! I've been using a Radius Root Slayer shovel for several years now, which I love, but an auger even out performs that beloved tool. I'm hooked--LOVE IT!!!

I will need a longer one to save my knees and a handle for stability. So far, I have only used the short 2x7" and 3x7" augers with an 18V DeWalt drill but in our clay soil with rocks you have to watch your wrist.

Thanks for this video. I have tried the auger but I believe I haven’t used the proper drill so I have been unsuccessful especially since I have clay soil. It definitely would be helpful if you had any recommendations. I only have a small yard but it definitely needs a lot of work and it would be helpful if I had a better way to plant in my garden.
