Variety of sockets 3/8’s and 1/2 Drive
Specialty tools to rent:
FWD WHEEL BEARING INSTALLER AND REMOVER
2/3 JAW PULLER to pull out wheel hub
Breaker+cheater bar for taking off the 30mm cv nut
1/2 drive Torque wrench to finish torquing cv axle nut to 190 lbs
17MM to take off wheel studs and 3 lower ball joint nuts that hold the ball joint to the control arm.
18MM to take off 2 caliper bolts holding on to the caliper bracket
30mm to take off cv axle nut ii
1 1-1/4 Drive socket for the wheel bearing bearing/hub installer
10m triple square bit to take off 6 bolts connecting inner cv axle to transmission
Safety goggles
Grease
Loctite-blue (inner CV axle bolts)
Hammer
Dremmel
Chisel
Beers and alot of elbow grease and patience! Remember if you fuck up you will have to do it all over again and break a bearing so be extremely careful to do everything right the first time! And dont forget the wheel bearing circlip!!!!!

Can you explain how you used the puller to remove the hub? What did it push against to get leverage to pop the hub out. Thanks for the great video.

whybjorn so the puller has a “slide hammer and a claw that you gotta assemble. and then what i did was that i lined up 2 of the 3 “fingers” on the claw with the outside of the hub *not the speed sensor side* and then once it was grabbing i then started to slide the hammer until it broke free. Make sure to use penetrating oil on it before doing thing it will help your arm alot lol Its hard to explain but the concept is pretty simple once you get hands on with it

Well I'm watching this as it's the closest thing I can see to a Cayenne bearing replacement. I had it done 6 months ago at a garage and its starting to fail... - oddly I saw the tech drop the bearing on a concrete floor before installing - they now say its 3 months to process a warranty claim... SO I'm looking to do it myself. The outer diameter I need for the bearing push is 96mm which I'm struggling to find. The stealership want 4 hours labour for some reason...

Thanks for the great video. It made the job very doable for me. Small point, some of the bolts on my car differed a little bit from yours...different years/models. Also, I had a hard time finding an attatchment for the slide hammer that fit the wheel nut pattern. NAPA lent a puller attatchment that fit.

What kind of oil did you use on the outside of the new bearing please

I used STP all purpose grease to press in the bearing, got it from autozone

Gosh darn it I just took mine into the shop to do this job :( Now its in for the driver side outer tie bar, and the air bag light went on, thanks for the video though!

Ahh dang too bad man i had been meaning to post this for the last 3 weeks bet never finished the editing on time. When i asked how much it would be to replace i was pretty shocked (they wanted 300 each side just for labor!) so i took a chance and decided to do it myself now im happy with the results. Got a few more things to do for maintanance so stay tuned 👍🏻

Is there a washer that goes on before the axel nut. The hub looks like it comes with a nylock nut. I did the same thing, before i saw this I bought a hub from Autozone.

john reilly that hub that they sold to me from autozone was the incorrect one cause it was designed to only be used for the TT models with an axle bolt to hold the cv axles. But as far as i know there is no locking nut on the cv axles there is only either a nut or a bolt that holds everything in place

When you get the one from Rock Auto doesn't it come with a nylock nut like it shows in the photo? Mine will be delivered Wed.

john reilly ohhhh yes at least mine did we were talking about the same thing all along 😂 i forgot the exact tq specs but i think i did mine to 180lb-ft+1/4 turn but i would double check that if i were you man. I wish i had the bentley manual

Rear spindle on the quattro is the same as the front hub of non quattro. Autozone has duralast part number DL51863SK that worked for my 2001. Spindle, bearing, snap ring, and cv nut all in one box.

Absolutely no issues!! runs super smooth! For the brand i would recommend any bearing that has a good warranty and as long as it dont have alot of play or make any grinding noises out of the box it will do. No idea about the wjb i installed national bearings on my car.

Wait. So the hub you bought from Autozone was the wrong one? Or was it your CV axle that you got from Autozone the wrong one? Cause I replaced the driver side CV axle with one online like you had and it was the wrong one so I got one from Rockauto that was the correct one (it was much shorter). But now i gotta replace the wheel bearing so I went and got the hub and bearing from Autozone and I am worried I got the wrong hub. Ughhhhh

Autozone gave me the wrong hub, their system thought that my TT used the cv axle that is secured by a bolt but mine actually uses a 30mm nut so the hub they hub they gave me had a deep cylinder look to it. Dont worry as long as you compare the old hub to the new hub you will be fine. As for the wheel bearing they are all the same the same dont sweat it. Make sure you dont forget to install the circlip after you done pressing it in the knuckle!

Gabriel1996 : I had the same thing happen to me; I installed new wheel-bearings, and a Dorman hub-assembly. Now, the damn CV Axle Nut can't go on the Hub. Did you get a new hub (one that allows the CV Axle to fasten to the Axle Nut), or a special CV Axle Nut that goes inside the tube on the new Hub?

Gabriel1996 : I did get them from O'Riely's, but they hald told me that I couldn't get a ''Refund'' on any parts once I had installed them... I GOOGLED Axle Nuts's from Dorman (the same Manufacturer as the Hubs I just installed), and there appears to be some Axle Nuts that fit inside that joke of a tube on the Hub; I'm going to go back to O'Riely's and see if I can ''ORDER'' one that will fit...

Victory is Myne they probably sold you the wrong hub damn... i left a link on the description i bought that hub and installed it on my car. Should fit and be wayyy cheaper than orielly prices.

Hey man, you around?? :) I followed your parts list last go-round and I drove with the axle nuts not torqued correctly so I ruined the hubs... THEN, I just bought new hubs from O'Reilly's cuz they were close... But went through the same thing you just did. Totally wrong, not recessed, the axle nut would not even catch a thread... I just paid a shop $100 to press in the bearings, hubs, knuckles delivered back to, and they were totally wrong. The hubs listed on ANY auto parts store, are wrong. So my question is, if you still monitor this channel, can you somehow take the wrong hubs off, and save the wheel bearing job? And just push the correct hubs back in yourself? Somehow? Or do you need to have them pressed out and all put back together and re-pressed in with the correct hubs? Is the whole thing toast if you have those un-recessed hubs in with the bearings? Yeah man pretty much you have to do everything all over again I totally understand what you’re going through because I went through it up probably around four or five wheel bearings before I finally got it right. The only thing that I can think of is that you can probably get some CV axles that are held in with the bolt and not a nut but I’m not too sure if it would be 100% bolt or not. Because those hubs that you have on they are the ones that are meant to be used with a CV axle with a bolt And not a nut i have no idea why autoparts stores do that.. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Ok basically, the original hub i had pressed everything correctly- the wheel bearing. but my dumbass had sanded the outside of the spindle thing that presses into the bearing so when i tried to install it back it was wobbly 🤦🏽‍♂️ ssssooooo i went to autozone and the dumbass sold me the wrong hub that was meant to go on a different model car cause it was meant to hold the cv axle with an axle bolt not a axle nut like what i have so i had installed that new bearing all pressed into the bearing but i realized it was the wrong hub when i tried to finish up by putting on the cv axle nut cause it didnt fit. So i had to redo everything
