Thank you for the amaizng video ! Three years ago I just got my skoda fabia m1 from a local car dealer. I haven't done any reapair to the suspension at first, just the usual engine maintanance: oil, belts, filters etc. So I drove quite significant miles in the first few months. One day, I don't remember why, but I bend down to shake both front wheels. A loud knocking noise I started to hear from the front wheel ends. I thought that this might be the stabelizing sway bar axel(the rubber part) or the ends of the sway bar that are attached to the shock absorber. So I drove my skoda to my local car mechacnic. When he gave me a call back the next day I went to the repair shop and he said that when he grabbed and shook the wheel while the car was up on the car lift, the wheel started shaking like it's gonna fall from the car momentarily. I changed both wheel bearings and almost every part from the suspension on my car, except the front shock absorbers since they are still reliable. A few days ago I changed the outer tie rod on the left wheel since it was making knocking noises. These are kind of reliable cars and will serve you longer if you are maintaning it properly.

I did this job yesterday and found the 36 mm socket I had bought specifically for this hub nut was slightly to big to fully engage with the nut( on the outside of the hub ) so check that your socket fully seats inside of your hub I used an OE spec cheap hub so maybe the measurements are a bit off and double check your driveshaft engages easily with the new bearing BEFORE fitting the new bearing you never know and checking might save pulling the bearing out again if it's the wrong one! Anyway I ground of 1-2mm from the outer of my socket so it fits perfectly and the jobs a good un.

@HatBoyHarvey5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you liked the video. How did you do it without pushing onto the flange?
@martinflierman24565 жыл бұрын
@@HatBoyHarvey i take of the complete suspension body ( fuse ) part . With the bearing stil in it ( cut off the plate disk connected to the bearing ( whith the wheel bolt threads ) then i just do it like I do almost all other bearings . Put the bearing with body under a hand driven ( hydraulic ) pressure machine . Using busses or sockets with smaller diameter and push out the bearing with the pressure machine . When placing the new one i turn everything upside down and put the new bearing below and push the body with pressure machine on top and press of down at the new bearing... just have to use something like little metal plates to keep the metal ring at its place and to not put pressure on the inner( circle bearing ) ring or else the new bearing will brake. Then just press down untill you here the click sound. With this way you dont need the special kitt but you do need to have a pressing machine. But these are second hand way cheaper then the toolkit around here haha .
@HatBoyHarvey5 жыл бұрын
yes, presses are widely used for bearings in garages etc, but it is the flange/collar that pose the main issue with these bearings. This design is harder for us mechanics also to install. I marked it like that as a guide for 45 deg as my eyesight isn't too good, but did torque it correctly. Hi Hat Boy Harvey, thanks for posting your MK1 skoda fabia films. We have the same car and are experiencing some of the same problems. Your clear and straight forward style is easy to follow! One question on the drive shaft nut, 36mm, 12 point socket, does it need to be a 'deep impact' socket? The one I purchased, not sure if its deep impact, is 50mm diameter and wont reach the nut in the recess!!
@HatBoyHarvey3 жыл бұрын
impact sockets are made for impact driver as they give a little to take the shock of the drivers, I never use them. I prefer to be quiet, the noise of those drill drivers that guys use drive me crazy and I'm crazy enough right. my socket was a little close too and is maybe slightly under 50mm diameter and fit on (draper) worked fine. Maybe take a tape measure to the shop, return the old one and find a thin walled deep one :-)

@HatBoyHarveyАй бұрын
You can use isopropyl alcohol and light abrasive like fine metal wool or fine graphite paper, but you don't want to go at it like a rampant fox, remember you're just cleaning it. You must retain the core size for the bearing to be a press fitting for safety sake. Saying that, you will find it to be mostly clean where the original bearing was and only maybe the inner and outer edges showing signs of corrosion which you should remove. Best of luck :-)

Slowly but firmly tap around the circumstance evenly through the bolt holes onto the tools flange plates until you are happy to attach the tool fully. It isn't easy if you have never installed a bearing before and you may feel you need three hands. Manually tapping the first stages is the best way IMHO to make sure the alignment is correct (I tapped the bearing in a fair way) continually checking alignment (imperative this is perfect) before using the tool to pull the bearing home fully. Hope this helps :-)

Also I had to remove the steering knuckle and use a hydraulic press to remove the bearing. I feel like a damaged sensor is the most likely cause.

It is really difficult to get the exact specification recommended by skoda for these. i have some trade engineering/automotive bearing grease left over from previous work that you can't get now. The greases recommended in the video are what skoda worksho manual recommends, so I put them in the video. You are lubing the inside of the hub so the bearing goes in easier and needs to withstand high temp/pressure so you can get it out again in the future. In my opinion any high temp/pressure bearing grease will do this ;-) I wouldn't worry too much as long as you don't use chip fat oil or lard you will be fine :-)

If you have a press and are confident this type of spacer/s won't slip at all then I agree, it will be possible, same goes for taking it out, by the look of it they are propping the hub up with angle iron, again 'if it slips'. Only OK if you know what you are doing and actually have a press and the space, although one would come in handy for other stuff. Audi A4 Haynes Workshop Manual: Removal and refitting of drive shaft. "Slacken the hub bolt 90 degress WITH THE VEHICLE RESTING ON ITS WHEELS". When the job is done, refit the wheel and "LOWER THE CAR TO THE - GROUND", then torque the hub bolt". Clearly then, this does Not damage the wheel bearing!
@HatBoyHarvey3 жыл бұрын
This is my take on it and I am sticking by it. If you load the bearing before tightening there is a possibility of bearing surface damage such as scoring because: as you tighten the bearing from an unaligned side loaded position the surfaces are being pulled into central alignment in an unequal manner. No damage can occur if you torque up the bearing first as the surfaces remain central when tightening.

I have the mot for 2 years ago and it said there is slight play on the ofs front wheel, they didn't say nothing last mot Wondering as I can't hear noise when driving from the bearing but when I brake and slightly turn the steering when practically stopped it slightly pulls the steering by itself? My power steering fluid is not up to the minimum also but it has a lot of fluid in the reservoir, Do you think it could be the wheel bearing pulling it to the left ? Pls

If it is a tracking issue then I think it could be play in the inner track rod, often overlooked. Check and replace both track rods and track rod ends. Fairly easy and cheap to do yourself. I'm not sure why on the polo they don't have this clip, presumably the rebate isn't there either. I don't think this clip is there to hold the bearing in, (On complete failure it may be a safety design feature to stop it falling out, dunno !?) just an audible click so you know it is seated OK I believe. As long as you make sure it is pressed home fully by the rebate without pressing on the flange all will be OK. The size of 72mm is the same, but I don't know if it is same/longer/shorter. Did you have a plastic ring in your box? Does this ring need to be installed? Can you tell me its usefulness? by thanking you
@HatBoyHarvey3 жыл бұрын
Clean it up and refit it. it is a dust seal protector for the bearing. Bearing kits often come with new ones.

Hi can you tell me please what type of Molykote grease you used there seem to be a few different types on ebay eg Molykote B2 plus, Molykote thread paste, Molykote 44m medium grease Thank you in advance Dave
@HatBoyHarvey6 жыл бұрын
Molycote is a trade mark brand that VW/Audi group recommend in their workshop specification. I will put the specs in the description, but what is important here is to use high temp high pressure grease and Molycote is a synthetic grease that out-performs mineral based grease. I used some old high pressure/temp industrial bearing grease that I have used over many years without issue, but Molycote is recommended.

What puller kit did you use. It looks a good kit but can't find it on internet. Please help

Thanks for watching, hope it helped. Mine was borrowed so it may be an older one. If you search for VAG 72mm bearing kit you will find one the same. Just make sure it is for your specific bearing and that it is indeed the 72mm one on your car. hope you find one and fix your car, not easy, precise job, but highly satisfying when done right :-)

Need your help again im using everything basically the same as you but the bearing wont crack loose ive got a spanner on the other side but it wont budge ???
@HatBoyHarvey3 жыл бұрын
make sure you grease the shaft and then it is just a question of controlled torque (more than you imagine). There is a reason I used a large scaffold tube over the socket bar! It will break loose as it has nowhere to go (penetrating fluid around the bearing edge if you like). Good luck :-)
@stewasb3 жыл бұрын
Im using a large bar over the breaker bar also mate but it just keeps slowly spinning round and i cant hold the spanner on the back nut when im trying to put total pressure on the breaker bar and pole i dont get how your back nut did not even move and you had no spanner on it but mine keeps turning surely once im tight that back nut should not be able to turn ???
@HatBoyHarvey3 жыл бұрын
I understand, maybe I was lucky that time with the back nut. I'd try and use a ring spanner long enough to jamb it against something like the top of the hub that meets the strut where it juts out. Put some temporary thick tape around it to stop it falling off as you may need both hand on the breaker side. it just needs to hold long enough for it to break/crack start the bearing off :-)
@abedinist2 жыл бұрын
How long do these take on average?
@HatBoyHarvey2 жыл бұрын
It's all relative to experience. Any job can be fast, but these are not something you should rush. The bearing needs to done right and that means a steady controlled methodical pre-planned approach is best always. If this wasn't Dane right and the hub collapsed at speed it could be a life or death situation not just for others, but yourself included! About 2-3 hours :-)

Hello my friend how are you ...can you help me... I change the wheels from summer to winter but with one bolt i have problem my threads inside are broken ( in wheel bearing threads ) what need to do ... can i open with something new wheel threads .. Thank you
@HatBoyHarvey5 жыл бұрын
If the threads are damaged inside the wheel hub housing then you have to replace the hub/bearing assembly. Don't be tempted to re-thread as the wheel would never be safe. Some may re-thread to save money, but they put themselves and others at risk. Fit a good quality bearing kit and have peace of mind :-)

Cant you take hub off and use press

You could do that, but the shoulders of the bearing have to be held with something not the top which is the hard part, otherwise the bearing will be damaged .

You maybe able to borrow one from another vag owner from one of the forums if they are near to you. I've seen people use a bearing press, but I would not recommend this method without the correct door plates. There are some cheaper none branded tools available online, but it is like buying bearings - You have to pay more for quality products.
