Some of the best shoes repair places I know will tell you their #1 patent leather cleaner and shiner is... Lemon Pledge in an aerosol can. You can find it at any store. They all say it beats out ANY of their branded products made for patent leather. Give it a try!

Okay, for anyone trying to get scuffs/marks off of patent vinyl/PU meant to look like leather: True patent leather yes a pencil eraser works. Patent vinyl 🚫 it causes abrasions that don't come out lol Nail polish remover got my scuffs off! Black scuffs white scuffs.. I used acetone but non acetone is better (less damaging). Use a Qtip to apply sparingly/targeted, and use just enough pressure. It's amazing, they come right off. Buffing scratches: I heard petroleum jelly but honestly I got better results buffing with canola oil. Happy thrifting!

Patent leather is really just plastic (either acrylic or polyurethane), only the structure underneath is leather. This is probably why the vinyl restorer worked better than any leather product. Even before modern plastics, a curing oil like walnut, tung, or linseed was used so it basically had a plastic coating.

In your experience does patent leather become a little bit sticky? Or is there a way to clean the tackiness off? Meaning when I touch my preloved Chanel patent leather clutch, I see my finger prints but if I rub the imprint, it disappears. You did an amazing job on the Chanel!

Patent leather is a plastic coating on leather. Over time the plastic will decay and there is nothing you can really do about it. I was taught that you can help the stickiness problem and extend the life by: wiping it down with rubbing alcohol and following up with original lemon Pledge (furniture spray in the aerosol can). It really does help!

Hi Bex! Thank you so much! I usually use a jewelry polishing cloth or microfiber cloth. Hardware is sometimes the most tricky because it can rust, discolor, the plating can come off, so it can be a little more difficult.

Hi Hadrian: I have a beautiful pair of patent leather Casadei pumps I purchased from The Real Real. When I got them, I noticed they are sticky which is a sign of age. I cleaned them with warm water and a few drops of Dawn but the stickiness is still there. Any ideas on how to unsticky patent leather? As a reseller, if I sell these to a buyer with this sticky residue all over them, it might be an automatic return. Any thoughts? Thank you!

I have patent shoes with a sticky film feel and what looks like blotchy scuff/water marks and surely need to try this. I hope the nail polish remover doesn't remove the patent film. If I had known about patent sooner, I would never buy it. These high end lux companies take leather and ruin it by coating it with plastic patent just to make it fancy looking and expensive, but ultimately it requires too much time and cost to maintain. In the end it is not worth owning luxe goods.

Omg I literally owned the Chanel Shanghai Paris bag in patent leather. Was soo excited to add it to my collection years ago. Was my second Chanel patent leather bag. Unfortunately ~*~ I WILL NEVER EVER BUY CHANEL PATENT LEATHER EVER AGAIN! IT SHOYLD BE ILLGAL TO CALL IT LEATHER. It’s pleather at best! Bought both in a Chanel boutique too. Gave one to my neice as toy cos the “leather” looked soo busted. Then Chanel replaced the other one and I quickly resold it as soon as I got the replacement. Bottom line ~ TRY AVOIDING CHANELS PLEATHER “PARENT LEATHER!” I ADORE THE BRAND ESP THE LAMSBKIN! But I swear to you the handle literally cracked open on the one bag and it was solid plastic enamel inside the handle. Barely any leather at all. It should be illegal to even call them patent leather on newer bags. 1990s patent leather ones was TRUE patent leather. This brands quality control is on a downward spiral.!!!

Chanel keeps getting cheaper quality by the day!! The vintage bags had 18KT YELLOW GOLD PLATING HARDWARE.! My favorite and they look like jewlery on your arm. Unfortunately ~ In 2009 they got cheaper & they quit using the 18kt plating and now using only 10kt gold plating. This brand is getting more expensive but lower quality then EVER B4!! A Chanel from the 80-90s can last decades. In 10+ yrs I’m sure my Chanel boy bag and newer ones will be in pieces. Hell my one Chanel boy bags lock broke only 3weeks into owning it. They replaced it. But still quality is getting worse and worse!! They need to get back to their strict quality control and impeccable leathers,gold,silver and what made them so luxurious!! I will no longer even buy the newer bags due to how poor the quality has gotten.
