I remember introducing modern Yu-Gi-Oh to a friend by telling them that: - There just about 2 types of cards. Engine Pieces and Staples. - Negate is a commodity. - Face-down Banished is the new form of true removal. - Graveyard is just a third deck. - Summoning monsters on you opponents field by tributing their monsters is a form of removal. Also I tried to buy Obelisk and Slifer decks and play it casually with them. I taught them combos, then I added handtraps, then I added boardbreakers, then I added floodgates. after that I let play them play with much meta relevant decks like Swordsoul.

Friends at locals have a 3 D format. No deck is allowed to have more then 3 lines of text on a card. It allowed modern gameplay with less text. And you still can focus on the Core-Gameplay. While people are not to much bothered with reading effects.

Excellent comment on breaking boards, I think the same that is you are trying to solve a puzzle. Remember every card has its limits and you are trying to make your opponent fall into your plays. That is what I love about the game and its way more fun I had in past slower formats.

About your point on modern yugioh having just as much decision making as old yugioh: I recently got into goat format, mostly because I realized I had all the cards already to make the top 3 decks. Looked like a really fun different way to play where there's much longer game strategies that play out, and every micro decision mattering more. When playing that against two of my friends, it did work out almost exactly that way. We went 10-20 turns back and forth really thinking about where to play everything. In 2 hours, I knocked out 7 duels against one of my friends before we felt mentally drained from the puzzling out of what to play where. Compare that to when we play modern. We did 1 game in 75 minutes and both feel like our brains have been microwaved after 3 turns each of some INTENSE back and forth on interruption and recovery. So you're pretty spot on when saying there are just as many impactful decisions and interactions to play out. It can get really intense just to stay alive one more turn and weather the storm of gas your opponent has left. But it can also be a complete blowout if your deck or your understanding of the game isn't up to speed for the modern power level.

Decks that have more obvious "here's the play in one or two actions" also can be good. Ones where you read the card once and you know where it goes into the strategy, versus ones where you kinda have to think, "So what do I do after this? It's saying I get to do something with a different in-archetype card, but what do I do there?" You give someone Salamangreat and they'll have to see combo lines in their head before they're even comfortable with the game. "So this adds a card... What do I add? This summons a card... What do I summon? Why do I summon that?" etc. But if they want to play a Link deck with animals something like Scareclaw would be more approachable since each monster is entirely self-contained - you know what they do, they summon themselves and buff up your Link monster and they know WHY Tri-Heart is their end board monster to go with. It doesn't matter if it's not as strong as Salamangreat, the point is that a more simple deck will be way easier to pilot and won't have a new player needing to spend many minutes reading their own cards and then immediately thinking, "But why is this card good in this deck?" You don't teach someone how to play a game by giving them a cheat sheet on what the most optimal strategies are, you start by giving them something they're comfortable with even if it's suboptimal and letting the mechanics steadily drip feed.

I personally think it ultimately starts from where exactly the starting point is in your explanation. DM folks might get taken aback at all the effects flying around, but 5D's veterans can get a head start if you show them modern Synchron or Blackwings and then explain Hand Traps... I got a friend who's a boomer and the main thing I did when explaining later cards is to use familiar cards as an analogue. For instance, he eventually decided to dabble with Synchros... I made the example that "an Ash Blossom and Dark Magician can Synchro summon Baronne de Fleur" to explain how flexible the mechanic CAN be... the response I got revealed how much more interested he was at trying it out, which was quite a bit.

I've usually asked what kind of strategy or motif they like and then recommend a deck. Telling people what some decks are based on like telling one attempted convert Tellarknights being constellations, when they were into astrology, made them identify/'bond' with a deck they had no previous knowledge on like say a Blue Eyes or Dark Magician. Showing retrains of older cards or 'relatives' (like new Demise/Ruin cards) also seemed to pique and keep interest for a bit.

I started the game as soon as it was introduced in the states as a child, I remember opening McDonald's packs hoping for frog the jam 😂 I stopped playing around XYZ era and came back when Master duel was released. For the life of me I could not get behind the game in it's current format but then I looked at it as a game of chess and learned what hand traps are and my skill level exploded

“Its like a puzzle” makes a bit of sense, but that is hard to say against stun/hand rip. Once/twice a day if I try to play 10-20 duels I will get hand ripped/stunned so that cards in hand are unusable. I realized I like unforgiving multiplayer games where a back and forth/winnable game might not be every game, but its hard to sell that to most people.

well at some point the speed does impact the back and forth of a game. and if anyone disagrees please tell me what your amazing counterplay is to win the game if your opponent starts with an average hand and starts setting up for a board with a handful of negates when RNGsus did not bless you with a handtrap/whatever the newest lava golem replacement is in your opening hand? I mean sure I guess you could have 36 negates/board breakers in your deck, then a hand of 5 always includes at least 1. but with older ygo, even through blackwings and such (dont know much past that didn't follow the game to much later) not having an answer to your opponents deck in your opening hand did not loose you the game. of course when you draw the outs it is a back and forth to use them optimally, but implying that necessarily needing to draw one or more out of a set of cards in the first turn is not taking a good bit of, not all just a chunk, skill out of the game seems to be ignorant at best and deliberately dishonest at worst.

I play with a group of friends that haven’t touched yugioh since the start of the GX era. I had them start with anime decks from there and slowly built up the decks. They are now brave enough to try synchros. Baby steps.

I wouldn't. Most of my friends and I grew up watching Yugioh. We love it, but we hate how the game is played in reality. I remember making up certain rules so that we all could play yugioh JUST like the anime, so we all can play and have fun. Anime rules: You can only have 1 copy of everything! No duplicates! You can only have up to 10 effect monsters in your main deck. No limit on normal monsters. You can special summon twice per turn max. No hand traps except for Kuriboh cuz come on, it's Kuriboh lmao The game is a lot more fun and more importantly FAIR FOR EVERYONE! Feels a lot more like chess too which is a bonus.

As someone whos played alot of oldschool yu gi oh and more new school yu gi oh, its a bit of s stretch to say they play the same way but new yu gi oh is condensed . Old Yu Gi Oh was more focused on controlling the board through combat and really let you play the game even if it was a losing game. New Yu gi oh is mostly about not letting your opponent playing at all and comboing off for 10 minutes while the opponent watches with their 1 or 2 handtraps to try to keep the other person from entirely locking them out of the game. I like both styles myself but oldschool yu gi oh is closer to hearthstone than what we have now

@@LunaticKD1991 I've heard the whole power creep thing before, but I can't find it in me to agree. I don't have a lot of money, so I'm pretty slow at making decks. As a result, I play some pretty old decks, and I don't feel nearly as left behind as I did in Yu-Gi-Oh. My win rate is actually pretty solid, come to think of it. Yes, some cards are kinda crazy (Quartzmon & Ruin Mode), but Digimon has a pretty cool resource system which makes incredibly stupid unbreakable boards a lot less common (can't remember ever being in that situation, actually). I'd rather deal with two Quartzmons than 6 negates on turn one. 🙄 Power creep is going to happen in every card game- that's just how time works. I just think Digimon handles it better in their card design, and that the groundwork of the game is set up in such a way that it allows for games to be less... Toxic. Also, the mechanics are pretty easy to get a grip on, especially when the effects are literally explained in parenthesis on the cards next to the key words (unlike magic, cough cough).

I played from Tengu Plants format, until Cosmo Blazer, so its been a couple years to say the least. I think the biggest barriers to me coming back is the knowledge check of all the cards and combos and at least conceptually, I don't really like building these super boards, and then the puzzle breakdown of them. I know it wasn't ever a good play, but I can't imagine a T set and pass is viable today lol. I guess the pacing is too fast for me.

If you have Yugi-boomer friends who just so happen to also be into fighting games, it helps to explain that classic Yugioh is like Street Fighter/Tekken whereas modern Yugioh is akin to Marvel vs. Capcom/Killer Instinct. Going off of my experiences, at least, it helps ease them into the conversation. For friends who don't even know classic yugioh (outside of maybe the anime or have just heard the name thrown around) I usually try to introduce them to an archetype or two that might interest them, just going off of other anime, video games, etc. that they like, and not worrying too much about talking about the mechanics. Bonus points if those archetypes have a cool story behind them.

I haven't really played since mid 2000s minus a foray at the beginning of duel links. I've played other card games since such as MTG and Hearthstone. What makes Yu-gi-oh so hard to get back into I feel is the language (on the cards and implied) on the cards. If I tried to get back into the game, I could build a deck, expect a card to resolve a certain way or interact a certain way but would be consistently told it doesn't work that way because of X. What targets, what doesn't, effects of if vs when, chain resolution dynamics. I'm sure there are video series that help with this stuff, but the only way to really get back into it would be to lose a lot and take your lumps via baptism or to shadow some more current players.

Imo you can just play whatever point in the game he is familiar with nowadays with online sims and it's much more of a blast than forcing the new stuff on them. Initially at least. Like think about it, to them it's that one fun game they used to have some fun with let them gain the passion for it before showing them a cardian turn and having smoke come out their ears 😂

The barrier to entry is so high as not knowing anyone makes it super hard for me to learn properly. I just show them my 48 minute long combo to plus 1 Jkjk, fr though I do try to show them simple and effective decks to get them in, then I start giving them ideas as well as showing staples that they need to deal with problematic decks. It isnt easy to get into the game whether you are an old fan or a new player. Masters is good for helping them learn the mechanics, but the meta on Masters is far from good for introducing them back as it is extremely overwhelming. But with a few fun, semi competitive decks, and some decks that give unique interactions, I can show them how to be flexible with the knowledge they have accumulated. SOme pf the players I have helped get back in are a bit suborn though. Some insist on using a combo that isnt very effective, some dont want to use cards everyone else is using. That is fine and all, but you do need to understand those cards on a fundamental level. The easiest way to do that is to play them yourself. For example, I dislike Kashtira. Not because its good or because I lost to it, but rather because its not the type of strategy that appeals to me. Yet I did get enough cards to throw together and build a deck. I played around with it until I had a good understanding of how the deck works, and there for I figured out ways to play around it. The effectiveness shows in several of my replays on Masters where I was able to out play the Kashtira player, even when they would set up a solid boss board. I learned ways to bait out plays or make the opponent second guess their own plays. Its not always easy, sometimes I brick. Just like any other player. I also complain a bit as well. How many of us dont? Players can still ease themselves into the game with the right play groups and the right decks. It doesnt have to be complicated. There are many formats you can play in as well as making up your own

I am an old school player of Yu-Gi-Oh myself. Are used to love the game. The main points I can’t get past in the new Yu-Gi-Oh are the following. I don’t like that there’s too few turns so no back-and-forth or at least not the same. I also don’t like the big nearly unbreakable boards.

I feel like retro cards just had better artwork.. And I think it was a major factor that drew people in. Like, they're just not going to make anything as iconic and brilliant as the OG Blue-Eyes White Dragon card art. Jinzo, Solemn Judgment, Pot of Greed, Morphing Jar, etc, the main character wasn't the only part of the card that was outstanding, it was the backgrounds that enhanced the appeal of those characters... Cards today look like they were modeled after Jumanji with all their effects and conditions.

My solution: just don't play. Hearing you talk about trying to figure out how to get past all these negates and big boards like a puzzle, but my deck is missing some pieces, or maybe it can't even fit that many. The problem is that they also have those same pieces I should have, or things to negate it, and to better effect because my deck is far lower tier. It's just frustrating and I just don't think this game is for me anymore.

Staples. Yugioh is all about staples. There are around 30-40 hand traps, board breaker, drowning spells and extradeck monsters that if they learn what to do and interact they can easily learn any deck. Otherwise most decks do the same thing but in diferent styles. They summon powerful monster to disturb you opponent. The difference betwin one deck and another is what staples those people 2 decks have.

You just gotta show them gameciel and say it's basically fissure, Imperm is basically trap hole (very loosely), and evenly matched is basically final destiny with an actually viable activation requirement. This is ofc in addition to just straight up giving them lava golem, change of heart, snatch steal, harpie's feather duster, and perhaps even monster reborn and say that these oldies are still legal and viable. They'll be far more patient trying to learn something they've chosen and like. Heck doesn't even have to be meta, if gate guardian brings them back into the game, let them have it.

Personally I hand crafted decks themed after the characters they recognize from the early anime and this has done wonders for my little group cause it allows everyone to play and have fun with all the cards they recognize from our childhood. They may not be interested in modern Yugioh but we all have fun in our goofy shitter deck duels. I ended up making extra steam accounts to be able to get the free gems I needed to be able to build everyone's decks but once it got up and running, we have been having a great time. We have someone playing a gamble heavy Bandit Keith deck filled with monsters that have guns and make you roll dice or flip coins, and it can be a lot of fun! We also have a slightly more modern Pegasus, a Kaiba, and a Yugi. Sadly no one wants to play Joey :(

I think the trouble is by trying to not overwhelm them you can intentionally or not be acting insincere and giving them a false impression of a version of the game that does not exist and then they sit down against a modern player who farts out a series of chained xyz summons ending in a 13,000 atk one turn knock out and will just feel like they were lied to. If you have to try and massage the truth to basically trick people into jumping back in then ultimately you aren't selling them on the modern game at all, just nostalgia for something that no longer exists and at worst might get someone to put money in something, instantly bounce off and feel like you intentionally tried to pull the wool over their eyes so to speak. If they don't like modern yugioh then trying to tell them what they want to hear to pretend its not isn't going to change the game that they will jump back into. Like i get trying to get friends back in i really do. But things change and with that so does the appeal. There are plenty of things i liked 20 years ago that are still going but i no longer like because both i and the thing i used to like have changed and no longer have this aligning appeal. We've had Speed Duels, Duel Links and so on and its just not getting people back in the longterm because the final goal is funnelling to said modern 1TKO decks and if people don't like that and honestly i think most probably don't and most just put up with it to "keep up" then they won't like modern YuGiOh! and its really on Konami to find a solution to that rather than trying to evangelise for a brand to insincerely try and pull someone into something they have actually told you they do not enjoy anymore because of the very nature of the modern game.

Everyone including myself gets turned off of the game when I get into the business structure of yugioh. Nobody wants to spend money on a game when the company just invalidates the cards youve already bought each year. The banlist is just to sell new cards and people supporting banning newer cards makes it hard to get people to play the game and also continue playing

Is there any room for like, getting them (back) into Yugioh at like an older format (eg Edison) without the intent of them eventually getting to current meta? I would like to get back into Yugioh, but as many Yugitubers have pointed out, 2003 YGO and 2023 YGO are essentially different games. Other than like card art/archetypes, there’s nothing about the modern game that appeals to me-especially gameplay. I sometimes play Duel Links with a Tenyi deck, but even that is too modern and unappealing to me. I could see myself going with Edison, but have no intention of going more modern. If a Yugioh friend wanted to get me back into the game with more modern stuff, hoping I can play at locals and stuff, for the sake of our friendship, I would politely decline. As for #2, I keep hearing people bring up the “interactivity” and how “there’s so much interaction now” or “old Yugioh didn’t have much interaction” or “you can interact on your player’s turn” or “there’s so much interaction in just two turns”… Just for me personally, the appeal of Yugioh as “duel monsters” was largely tied to monsters fighting, not summoning monsters from every deck possible to build a huge board and “oh wait I can ‘interact’ and negate their summon, but then they can ‘interact’ and negate my negation…omg all this interaction!” Okay fine, all this interaction, but when can I get my monster out so our monsters can fight? Flesh and Blood is the first TCG I played since I stopped Yugioh and it gives me a lot of similar vibes from back then, especially with the “interactivity.” Basically you can block your opponent’s attack or let it hit you. There’s of course strategy involved, but like the recent Kaiba vs Yugioh collector deck video from a couple months ago, it’s more “I play a couple cards, you play a couple cards, there’s some interactivity in between, and back and forth.”

Number 1 rule: Ask him or her about previous formats they are familiar with. If they know edison format, you have some good options to sorta get them up to speed of things because edison format is where combos kinda began. You pretty much have to play fin decks against them and let them know how combinations of cards can create nice boards and basically you ideally want to kill your opponent as soon as you open them up and not overcommit if the kill isn't there. A habit many new players have is they burn all their resources and dont kill you and you're just like "you're wise open and now I kill you." Lol

I have the issue of trying to get Magic players into Yu-Gi-Oh. Trying to sell them that Yu-Gi-Oh is just like Magic except you can more efficiently and reliably do the really cool things in the deck is hard, especially with one who tried Master Duel without coming to me for help to help with onboarding and explaination. I really wish this game was easier to get into. I think it's the best card game out there, having played several in my life including Magic, and I have not wanted to look back. I don't know if getting people into Yu-Gi-Oh from another game or getting them back into Modern is harder.

You start with goat format wich is very simple compare to normal yugioh,and then if they like it then they can learn each mecanic with time but if you start with normal yugioh they will feel lost as it is too much to learn in one go

But even anime decks there are XYZ and Link support that helps them. XYZ is easy to understand you have 2 monsters with identical levels that overlay the monsters but you can pitch materials to trigger certain effects and some XYZ rankup bypassing material requirements (sometimes). Links to summon a Link each monster counts as part of a Link one. Let's say you have a Link 2 monster + 2 monsters it can Link up to +4 Link. Also there can be different interactions based on graveyard effects,card effects in general and the usage of the Links Arrows. But back on topic for example for anime deck let's say Blue Eyes I run 8 Fusions 3 XYZ 2 Synchro and 2 Links it also depends on the engine package on how I build the extra deck.

I would say for people who have not played yugioh but want to see the difference between then and now I would have them play on a speed duel deck because for some it would reminds them of the anime plus when they get to keep the speed duel box they can see how different decks work for example not to sure how much the older speed duel boxes are but people who grew up with GX era well they have a good deal going amazon for this speed duel box and the new/older player who remembers GX or the OG series they can start to see how different the game is this to me would sort of ease them into the normal TCG version of the game. I hope this helps someone out there because I am going to be doing this with a group of friends who have not played yugioh or have any of the cards to play with.

About a year ago was curious about getting back into Yugioh having not played since like 2006, but seeing what it’s like now I’m definitely not interested in the modern TCG. I tried Speed Duel a little, and it’s a lot closer to what I like(d) but the half board/deck/LP thing was a big turn off for me. I just want to play the “full” game but with much-less OP cards. Doing SD with 5 zones and 8000LP and 40 cards would be great for me. Unfortunately I have no friends to play with and my LGSs are all modern meta players.

A good "modern" deck that helped me introduce 2 friends so far is Witchcrafters. Yes, their VERY bad meta wise. But their combo chains are short but consistent enough that it doesnt immediatley turn off new players from the get go. Them being simple to play also makes it easier for you to focus on teaching about the extra deck. Just make sure the cards in the extra deck are SIMPLE too. The absolute worst thing you can do is try teaching new or returning players anything regarding multi-step combos. Take things slow

The problem with there being things like hand traps is for new players how do you know what to counter? It makes you feel helpless because you think you counter an inportant card and then they just play something that is absurd. Theres no way you can expect a newer player to know how to interact when there are dozens of decks with dozens of different overpowered cards There is no consistency. Yugioh refuses to adapt keywords, so the players are somehow expected to memorize thousands of cards. Thats where the whole "yugioh players dont read" comes from. The anime is more and more relevant, if you arent a complete pro you have no idea what tour oponent is going to play

That's the worse advice you can give, 1 never start with a complicated nuanced deck. They need to work up to that not only that they need to not only know how their decks work but also how other competitive decks work. Also showing them a Meta deck isn't teaching them anything how deck building works. Top tier Meta decks play themselves instead show multiple different decks so they learn and identify on what cards they look for in their decks. It goes under the lines you can cook them a meal or teach them how to fish, your suggestion is just making them a meal. Also just throwing a top tier deck at them won't make them a better player, good players take time to learn, identity cards,and how different interactions resolve. It's better to start with more simple decks and gradually introduce them to more complicated strategies.
