The AA rep should have mentioned that you can change your return flight once you've "used" your outbound flight, meaning on arrival at your destination. Only then can your return be treated as a separate booking, with it's own value assessment of the current fares. With all airlines, you save booking round trip, but only if you treat it as such. That said, prices have increased about 30-50% across the board since this was booked so there would still be a price increase to reconcile.
