Your art is pretty sick dude! Some advice, don’t be afraid to go thick with that clear, except for the first coat. A lot of people are scared to. If you do that you’ll have a lot less orange peel and texture and it’ll lay down smooooth. May still need a good wet sanding and buffing though.

Should tape up the back vent too, gotta be extremely careful when painting helmets because the solvents in the paint can ruin the integrity of the helmet causing it to fail during a crash and not protect the rider. Very cool paint job and excellent work!
@IronGordon

Only becomes a problem if the paint directly comes in contact with the raw lid itself, which is why I didn't strip the factory paint job, just scuff. I'm not an expert, you should always do your own research and only do what you feel safe with. Thanks
@FrankPapadakis
@FrankPapadakis 4 жыл бұрын
It's the fumes and overspray from the solvent paints that cause the issue, not just the paint itself. The OEM's use a solvent based paint on the shell of the helmet which is fine, but if the foam gets degraded from the fumes the helmet will look fine when it has actually been compromised.
@FrankPapadakis
@FrankPapadakis 4 жыл бұрын
I'll add, OEM's paint their helmets before the protective foam is assembled into the helmet. You can paint directly on the helmet, that's how a oem will apply paint.

Brilliant! I love that you just show your painting as it happens - even the bits which always look crap until it all comes together and you're suddenly "oh, wow!" I consider myself an artist and only came here looking for advice on paints to use but got so much more from this. Thank you Iron Gordon. ps. the list of products in the description is excellent and you even used pretty much the exact same helmet I have(!) One thing I saw on a less impressive vid was a note to say to mask out the safety markings (like the ECE or Kitemark numbers here in the UK).

You make it look so easy though..takes me much much longer with prep and even thinking of the design. I have never used lettering paint and recently I have seen many folks, including you, use it. Next project- lettering paint! :D Thanks again for the video!

WOW MY MIND IS BLOWN!! Thanks for sharing your creative processes for this incredible piece. I loved watching as it worked and you have some real talent that was impressive even before you were completed. I was wondering if you have ever tried laying down a couple coats of clear and then wet sanding once its mostly cured, then adding layers, sanding etc etc? The reason I was curious, is because I've had some painted and decaled helmets that seemed to scuff or flake prematurely since the clear coat was thinner. When I watched automotive shops creating really long lasting paint jobs they have wet sanded between coats. Keep up the awesome content and I hope you stay healthy and happy in your future endeavors.

@@IronGordon That might be fine, depending on what the original paint is, good chance it won't bleed through. @@The77Game I don't think its too common of knowledge, and I haven't kept up on the helmet tech/materials if theyve changed any... but its something that should be spread around to any custom painters, could save lives... It brought back the memory when I seen this video. When I was taught not to paint them... We had a guy that was going to paint his helmet. The instructor seen him about to paint it, and rushed over and said very sternly not to do that because it can weaken the helmet. Maybe a week later the guy laid his bike down, bounced his helmet off the ground, got tons of road rash on his forearms and legs, but nothing deadly. The helmet took the damage and not his head. Probably saved his life or at least saved him from brain damage. It was lucky the teacher was paying attention that day.

Mr. Iron Gordon, I am in the process of painting one of my existing helmets but based on my research, I see a lot of warnings against using most any spray paints for their possible damage to the helmet's outer layer. Were the Rustoleum paints you used not damaging? Thank you.
@IronGordon
@IronGordon 4 жыл бұрын
I researched it out as well because I heard the same warnings. But all those warnings weren't backed by any kind of data or research, so it may be a lot of perpetuated bias toward the concept of spray painting a helmet. Polycarbonate doesn't respond well to Acetone, which is used in spray paint as a carrier for pigment. However if the helmet is painted from the factory and your spray paint never touches the polycarbonate then I am unsure of why there would be an issue. Also the spray paint should never touch the foam liner. But I'm not claiming this is safe, I don't know if its safe, I am not a scientist HA! Paint within your comfort zone
@Turco949
@Turco949 4 жыл бұрын
@@IronGordon Thank you, sir! As always you provide very candid and detailed replies. I started to feel the same way. @IronGordon
@IronGordon 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah people kind of like to regurgitate some vague advice about that. Here's what I've learned. Do not let spray paint or solvent touch the foam liner of the helmet. It melts the foam which is critical to the crash protection of a helmet. Tape off all your vents and any hole in the helmet to avoid that. When painting over an existing paint job. Sand the old paint thoroughly, but do not sand through the old paint so far that you hit the raw shell of the helmet. Solvents found in spray paint could damage the integrity of the shell depending on what the shell is made of. All that being said I am not an expert, that is what I have learned so far and you should do your own research before attempting to modify any safety device. Hope that helps

Interested in a trick for that water/bubble effect you used the stencil for? Find a foamy glass cleaner, spray it on the project in a pattern you are happy with, paint over it, let paint dry, wipe away glass cleaner. It’ll be virtually the opposite of what you got there

great work dude! I love to do these kind of mods too, but I learned a trick to avoid the texture you mentioned. Spray the first 2 layers of transparent varnish, let dry and then sand with light grain between the other remaining ones. But still great colour contrast and textures!
