As a person who is dealing with an eating disorder and trying to kick its ass, THANK YOU for this video and for your words. They are truly encouraging and heart-warming. This is the first holiday season in a long long time in which I'm not feeling guilty eating biscuits and sweets and processed food, because for years I'd been living in complete fear of that kind of food. I have kinda finally understood that the concept of "clean" food is silly and dangerous, and since then my mental stability is so much better. Thank you for your contribution to this extremely relevant topic, LOVE your videos and your participation to the vegan community! 🌹

I 100% agree with this. Going vegan/being healthier doesn't need to be at the expense of indulgence. If I see a vegan pastry, especially at a place where I don't expect to find one, you better believe I'm eating it lol

You are so much younger than me and I wish I had gone vegan and adopted this attitude before I hit 36. Haha! But I totally agree with what you're saying. And, in the end, it's what you eat long-term that matters, not what you have on occasion to treat yourself.

I’ve been vegan for almost a month so I haven’t really experienced this yet. I would probably just make the best vegan food in the world because I know what I put into it and I can still enjoy it, I mean most plants are healthy right? The only downside is that I don’t know anyone vegan (yet) because everyone around my age (13) isn’t really thinking about stuff like this. I kinda feel Like a adult when I’m around them. Since I still wanna be healthy and fit when I’m old, I begin with a healthy lifestyle this young. I’m very proud of myself for that. This was my life story😂🙊✨🌱💕

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for this. I agree 100% with the 'more frequent' style of eating. I literally restrict certain foods because they're 'unhealthy' and then when I allow my self some of it, I always stuff myself until I'm about to explode.

Veganism often crosses the line into restriction.... we already restrict sooo many “foods” that other ppl eat, just eat what makes you feel good and happy too :)
@madeline5175

I don't feel at all restricted on a vegan diet. I feel more empowered and have endless options. This is because I choose to cook a variety of recipes and am always trying something new. Veganism isn't about taking foods away, it's about not eating meat/eggs/dairy, and adding so many other foods! Before I was vegan, I didn't eat seeds, a variety of different fruits and veggies, or tons of recipe combinations. I would just do the typical burgers, chicken, eggs - nothing unusual. A vegan diet is only restrictive if you make it that way - just like any other diet; Paleo is super restrictive. Gluten free is super restrictive. Like Caitlin says, listen to yo body and ignore that awful guilt that can creep it.

Madeline Michael I agree with what u said. That’s not how mainstream society views veganism though. It is seen as restrictive. And sometimes it crosses that line into restrictive healthy foods ie no salt oil sugar fat etc. so I’m happy your personal experience is different from the stereotypes, that’s not how society views vegans tho.

I don't really "allow" myself to have chocolate, but I've been stressed from finals, so when I finally bought Enjoy Life chocolate chips, I ate WAY too many and felt sick and guilty. I completely agree on indulging on a little piece of something more frequently than restricting that “forbidden” food and only eating it occasionally, leading to a binge because of guilt and desire of a food you’ve been restricted from eating... I indulge on a at least 1 thing that I enjoy on a daily basis, whether that be a piece of chocolate, a serving of chips, etc. it really helps you to make better decisions on your portion control because you’re consciously aware that you are able to continuously have a little treat without feeling like it’s a “one shot wonder” and feeling obligated to binge on it because you never have it in your diet.

Experience has taught me that my body HATES me when I eat unhealthy choices. Like sweets, processed foods, sugar drinks. An occasional piece of high cacao 70% French dark chocolate is fine. Even vegan 'butter' cheese' mess with my digestive system. And if I am not drinking water through out the day my body lets me know in a not nice way. It's also important to know what nutrients your body really needs when you feel the desire to eat high salt, high fat, sweets etc.

I appreciate that you talked about the cultural/emotional importance of food. I'm so tired of people minimizing food to just "fuel." Humans are one of very few species that share food and eat together, and even in the prehistoric archaeological record, it's evident how important sharing meals has been.

I feel like when it comes to your diet, I think that adding things is more important than taking them away. Of course avoid animal products and avoidable toxic chemicals as much as you can but otherwise don't get too caught up in "I shouldn't eat x or y" and instead focus more on "I think I would feel better if I ate more leafy greens or fresh fruit etc"

I completely agree with your stance on having more balance versus feeling the need to be 100% clean. There have been many times I have tried to eat "perfectly" and I never could end up sustaining it and would always feel SO guilty for caving in! A lot of vegans have preached purity, but intuitive eating with balance is a much better and much less stressful lifestyle. Thanks Caitlin, I think a lot of us needed to hear this!

Thank you so much for this video! As a vegan, it's much easier for me to have less guilt surrounding food - both in terms of ethics and health. I'm pretty consistently getting my fruits n veggies and all that so I can indulge here and there. But I still experience a lot of anxiety, guilt, and stress around food now and again, especially during the holidays when there's a lot of unhealthy things in large volume (like last year when I made a huge batch of vegan cookies - but since I'm the only vegan in the house, had to eat them all by myself because I also have guilt around wasting food and I NEVER throw things out). I'll eat unhealthy things for the sake of not wanting them to go to waste or because I'm craving them - and when I go off track just a couple of times, I tend to start craving more junk food than normal. But I start to worry that I'm not being healthy enough or stressing about weight, etc. It's a tough battle and I'm sure a lot of people struggle with it! So it's nice to hear your thoughts and advice on it - thank you :)

Loved this and I can totally relate. In my early teens I started to have an eating disorder - nothing dramatic, but I still have to count my calories and do not like my body which makes me over-exercise if I feel like I ate too much. But right now, my biggest fear is salt. I do not really know why, but since I am eating a lot of salty foods right now, I always find myself feeling bad for it. Problem is that I absolutely love my vegan pepper steaks (I am a vegan that loved the taste of meat but does not want to put their cravings over an animals life) and they are very salty, but if I don't eat them, I am always very low on protein because I am not a huge fan of tofu, tempeh and whatever else is out there and get stomach aches if I eat to many beans and legumes (lentils are legumes, right?).

I definitely needed to see this video, thank you so much, Caitlin. I've struggled so much with limiting myself and making myself miserable by not letting myself eat the foods that I want because it's not completely healthy. Now I get terrible anxiety when it comes to eating so I'm trying to tell myself that it's ok to eat the treats that I want in moderation because the other 90% of the time I am choosing healthy foods. It's been really hard to try and get myself to stop stressing so much about it and to just enjoy the foods and memories that come along with indulging in a tasty treat but this video definitely helped me, so thank you

Honestly, I would be DELIGHTED if there were somewhat indulgent vegan options at a holiday party, dinner, or any other food-related event! Typically, my extended relatives would provide almost little to no vegan options for me, let alone provide any vegan desserts! So, it's really easy for me to eat healthily on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day since all I can usually eat are the salads, veggies, rice, and sometimes tofu. Nevertheless, it is still REALLY challenging for me to resist temptations when coming back home for winter break since my area is less walk-friendly than my college campus, and there are MORE amazing vegan restaurants and stores with lots of indulgent meals that I have to try! I feel very self-conscious about the things that happen to my body over the holidays because I naturally become softer and less active. But at the end of the day, that's A-OKAY! P.S. Oh yeah, and I can totally attest to the fact that healthier alternatives don't always cut it. Come on. I don't want a raw vegan pizza with a grain free crust or avocado toast on a lettuce wrap (WTF?!).

I really appreciate this video!! I've recently been working with a therapist to get past some of my lingering food fears. I developed an eating disorder a few years ago which was in large part influenced by the high carb vegan movement and raw til four lifestyle being pushed. It became so extreme and restrictive for me and the lack of fat fucked up my hormones and I have not had my period since. Veganism has the power to be such an abundant, delicious, satisfying way to live! While being health conscious is admirable, so is eating that cupcake with white flour and icing and vegan butter. I'm still finding that balance but I'm so glad videos are coming up like this now to make people realize it's ok (!!!!) to have salt, oil, sugar, etc. Especially around the holidays, it also shows other people that veganism is not extreme and that you can indulge and enjoy food like anyone else. My one thing is, don't you avoid oil, Caitlin? Most of your recipes seem to be oil-free? I've been slowly incorporating oil back into my diet and it is freeing not to be so fearful of it.

This is SO good, and something I needed to hear! I have been kind of depriving myself of/strict with sweets because my primary goal is weigh loss. I've lost 40 pounds in 11 weeks and I have another 80-85lbs to go doing HCLF. It's like I know that there are healthy ways to make desserts or that it's okay to indulge every once in a while, but I'm still trying to find a balance because I don't think I have self control. I intuitively listen to everything else my body craves, but when it's like, "I want chocolate" I grab fruit instead. The struggle....

Thank you so much for this video Caitlin! I'm already thinking about family meals this Christmas. After years of dealing with comments on me not eating meat, my family has pretty much gotten used to that, but the rest of the food is still definitely not vegan. My mom uses butter in all of her cooking, frying and even soups. All cakes and pies are all eggs, butter and sugar. They would think I'm totally mad if I wantd to have vegan substitutes for all that. And yes I do make some additional vegan food to share, but I always have such a hard time and feel guilty refusing their main dishes... We usually have fish for Christmas and I was just asked yesterday again if I will have some. I can sense how uncomfortable/dissapointed even though I have explained it all to them thousands of times. I'm sure a lot of vegans are dealing with that too.

I totally see where you're coming from. I have been striving to be an ethical vegan for some time now. With the holidays coming up im just feeling way more pressure from my family because they still use regular butter and milk when they cook for me even though im lactose intolerant anyways. It sucks being rude and saying I wont eat what they cook for me but at the same time I don't want to eat food that is gonna hurt my body and that comes from animals at all.

Cristian Matel if you were diabetic, had a dairy, egg, gluten allergy or could literally die if you ate something with nuts in it, how would you deal with it? How would they treat you? Make sure there are foods you can eat that others would enjoy as well and you might be surprised how well things go. Our son was born diabetic so from birth he didn't eat candy, pies, cakes etc. A friends daughter cannot have peanuts while another friends son cannot have dairy. And we have never had any issues with family, friends when it comes to being vegans, since they respect our choices be they for medical or other reasons.

Could you ever go completely raw vegan?? I feel like that would be really hard to do!!! I’m intrigued by it tho!

Yeah, I'd have to agree about not stressing over having unhealthy stuff here and there, like vegan butter in a decadent dessert, or something someone cooked with oil. That being said, and this is purely for me personally, I have a strong aversion to oil, since I learned it definitely isn't awesome for my body, and I tend to strive strongly towards making my food as virtually healthy as possible, because it's both physically pleasing in the sense that it tastes super awesome, but mentally pleasing, because I know I'm not hurting my body by eating unhealthy things. Now, if I'm out and I happen to come across a restaurant with a vegan option (its fairly slim where I live) and it has oil, I won't stress out about it, as I expect eating out to be unhealthy in general. Probably because before I went vegan, I ate gross unhealthy food all the time, and so my brain associates eating out as unhealthy xD but if I'm looking up a new recipe to learn and try, I'll either try to find a way to not use any oil/butter/etc. or I'll just skip over a recipe til I find an oil/butter/etc free recipe

I'm SO glad that a lot of people found this video helpful, but unfortunately for me I was disappointed. And I LOVE your content, don't get me wrong, but hear me out... As someone who HAS a problem with binging, I found this hard to relate to. How do I go from Point A to Point B, as in from Binging all of the chocolate to eating it on a routine, but with control? I work/go to school, and there is a Trader Joes by my campus. Every week, I will grab a box of vegan chocolate chip cookies (and sometimes other things) and every time I finish that box by the night. If I go multiple times, I still end up binging, I just end up binging more (like 3 times a week instead of once). Also, how do I not binge when on my period? Its also really hard, because I've been vegan for years now and I am pretty healthy, other than the fact that I am overweight, and I personally couldn't connect to this video. Maybe it's just me, and I know that this is in NO way your fault, I just find that I binge in the Winter- always. And every other video usually doesn't relate to me either because the advice does not pertain to vegans :(

I love your videos and I agree with you entirely. But, out of curiosity did you mean to say butter? When you said you don’t mind if your mum makes cookies with oil or butter, you’ll eat it? Just curious

I see eyes rolling about eating gluten free. Really upsets me because so many people don't believe my gluten intolerance is real based off one article that news outlets decided to quote, while there are a dozen of other peer reviewed articles proving that gluten sensitivity is real, and can be worse than celiac disease because there's no test for it other than an elimination diet. I'll stick eating gluten free for the holidays, because the taste of wheat is not worth causing me joint pain, chronic fatigue, muscular weakness, and depression.

Anyone here eats plant based for ethical reasons? I feel like so many more people are because of health, but I really do think that ethics is what fuels a plant-based diet.
