In this episode, I discuss why I use lorazepam and clonazepam to treat anxiety. I also discuss other techniques besides medication that help me with anxiety. I require the use of benzodiazepines in place of SSRI antidepressants due to my diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder.
My book is now available! It discusses my experience with Bipolar Disorder.

I've never had panic attacks, or anxiety, ever. Yet over the past two months, and especially the past 2 weeks it's been INSANE! I thought I was dying, having a heart attack, or stroke. Turns out it's panic attacks. Just started on lorazepam, and omg what a life saver. I'm also looking for a new job. We are convinced at this point it's my job, as I literally have no other reason to have a panic attack.

I never understood anxiety until June 2023, when I experienced a massive panic attack that felt like a heart attack. At the time, I was caring for my mother, who was battling cancer and sadly passed away last month. I also lost my job, which led me to drive for Uber full-time. The night of the attack was a weekend, and I was trying to stay up late to make some extra money. I had a couple of Monster drinks, which seemed to trigger the anxiety. Since then, I’ve stopped consuming caffeine. Fast forward a year, and I’ve been doing slightly better. I’m taking 25mg of Sertraline daily and using Lorazepam as needed. Sometimes, I can go a month or more without taking it. I’m prescribed 0.25 mg and only take it when breathing techniques aren’t enough or when I’m driving with a passenger. I always keep it close by. I also attend biweekly cognitive behavioral therapy sessions. Anxiety is tough sucks. Thankfully I no longer have to drive Uber now that I found a full time job working remotely so I can get fresh air daily and workout

Thank you for sharing your experience. It's nice to see a professional talking openly about their mental health struggles; one step closer towards ending stigma against mental health illnesses. People demonize benzos and yes I know the addiction factor is very scary but everyone's situation is different and these concerns should be discussed with the prescribing physician. For me personally, clonazepam has been a lifesaver. I started getting panic attacks 6 months ago, got an rx 0.5mg 30 pills and I still have over half left because I only use it PRN and I never take more than one pill in one day. Some weeks I don't use it at all (no withdrawals or crazy side effects), other weeks I may use it for 2 days depending on the circumstances. I used to waste hours trying to wait out and recover from the panic attacks which would come out of nowhere. I couldn't work or focus. But now if that happens I take one pill or sometimes even half a pill and the anxious thoughts and sympathetic activity disappear and I can move on with my day and function.

Amen, alprazolam 1mg x2 daily has been a GODSEND. I've been on it for quite some time but I don't need it every day and I've noticed I can also take breaks without noticeable withdrawal symptoms. People demonize these drugs when they can be the difference in having a functional day or being a complete wreck. Every one is different and I am luck enough to have an amazing physician to help me through my problems.

The way to break down the nasty stigma surrounding mental health is what you are doing. We must talk about it. I have anxiety, and panic disorder... and use Ativan when needed... probably once or twice a night. I have nocturnal attacks, which have ended with me in the hospital convinced I am dying... if you have been there you know what I mean. Now, when I feel like I am unhinged I pop one and it helps tremendously and I usually just go back to bed. Not only does it help in the moment, but it helps long term because I think back next time I feel this way and know that the pill helped, so I must not be dying.

I find that there are times when I dont experience anxiety and wish I could always feel this way, what tends to exacerbate it, is pending public situations, I may have to give a presentation, and although I may be calm there is a simmering niggling thought that hangs around in my head even though I may not be thinking about what I have to do. Reframing can help in some situations, but Im starting to see that it doesn't address some of the activities in my head that my subconscious mind thinks is a necessity to have just sitting there waiting to surface. Thanks for sharing this, its very mush appreciated.

Thank you for sharing this. I struggle with an anxiety/mood disorder and benzos have been absolutely life changing for me. All I hear are negative things about benzos these days. I understand that they pose risks but I think they have a really bad rep that results in patients not being able to get the help they need. Especially for those of us who cant take SSRIs and have no interest in being a zombie on antipsychotics. Keep up the great work!

Which is way to expensive I just one fo the gps would actually listen to me and why I require this kind of medication and that I’ve tried very other and they haven’t worked for me.. Anyone on here had success in the UK getting a Script for benzodiazepines? If so how did you go about do it Cheers!

I have panic disorder and alprazolam has been extremely effective for me for 15 years. The anxiolytic effect never waned and I didn't need dose escalation.. Unfortunately it has now been classified as a controlled substance here in Australia and GPs are very reluctant to prescribe it. Currently my pdoc is weaning me off alprazolam onto diazepam, with the plan to then wean me off the diazepam. In the meantime I've also been put on vortioxetine off-label as an anxiolytic. It has surprisingly few side effects for an antidepressant. We'll see how this all goes. My pdoc says that I'm unfortunately "collateral damage" in a well-intended push to reduce benzo use in the population. I never abused it in all those years. It was pretty much the perfect medication for me RIP.

That seems extremely unfair. It's unfortunate that there are so many drug addicts that cause this type of cracking down. They do/say anything to get these drugs to use with their heroin/opiates to increase the effects and then OD. I don't understand how someone like you isn't viewed as an exception to this. You're obviously not getting high off the same dose you've been taking for 15 years and if it helps your anxiety, that should be an acceptable use. I don't get it.

Using benzo is like taking a high interest loan to cover a debt or like putting out a fire by simply closing the door. The fire is still there with flames getting higher. If you keep taking them you just close yet another door until your house has burned down. Anxiety is like beeing swept up in a tornado but the benzo is just putting you in the eye of the storm and things become calm. If you intend to use them, only use when absolutely needed. Ask yourself if you really, really need one or if you can cope and manage without. I say once a month, not more. I was prescribed benzo for four weeks straight and after i stopped had a rendevouz with hell for months on end. Please be careful.

I did however go through a couple days of some tension and felt a little anxious and out of sorts when stopping it but exercise helped. Just knowing that I have the prescription in my medicine cabinet alone helps me deal with anxiety and severe stress. I have used it for sleeping, jet-lag, anxiety and out of control stress...... Is there a reason why drug manufacturers use multiple brand names for the same medication? To me it's really confusing and doesn't make sense. Possibly you have not been taught correct meditation techniques. The point of meditation is to respect that all things change, and as we breathe and let the breath flow through our body and let it go. As with the breath, our thoughts arises and can float away if we allow it to go. The point of meditation is to find peace in the moments between thoughts. Meditation is not to think it’s about being an letting thoughts arise and dissipate like clouds. I recommend audio guided meditation free from the insight meditation center.

Great video Thank you sir! Was put on klonopin for 14 months 0.75mg one time daily for panic attacks and anxiety. I tapered to 0.25mg for the past month. Withdraw is pretty bad even at a small dose . any idea how long I can expect this to last? Any other meds help? My Dr said gabapentin does 300mg at bed but im afraid of withdraw from that med? Any thoughts would be appreciated! God Bless Michael
@phazernet9760
@phazernet9760 2 жыл бұрын
Acute withdrawal usually lasts between 1 and 3 months after stopping the medication. PAWS (post acute withdrawal syndrome) can last for years, and there is no treatment for it. Gabapentin or pregabalin can help with some withdrawal symptoms, but they just "take the edge off" and they come with their own withdrawals. Tapering from 0.75mg to 0.25mg is EXTREMELY FAST in a month after long term use. Benzos damage the gaba system, and the brain has to heal in time. Nobody can give you a time frame, because it will last as long as it takes for your brain to heal. It's all individual. This is the kind of information every prescribing physician should give when first prescribing a benzodiazepine, and should always be discussed with every patient, because when it comes to benzodiazepines, in many cases, the risks are much greater than the benefits.

Yes, yes it does. Well. Sorry. It helps me. Everyone is different. Please remember that no one reacts the same as someone else. Clonazepam is the best benzo. It lasts very long. @phazernet9760
@phazernet9760 2 жыл бұрын
They have a role in keeping it under control, but they don't treat it. It's like saying insulin treats diabetes. And the worst part is that you don't even have to abuse them, or take high doses to become physically dependent. It doesen't happen to everyone, but when it does happen, it's devastating. And the withdrawal syndrome is so poorly understood by the medical community, that in many cases people end up diagnosed with other illneses. And that's if they don't commit suicide, because that's another symptom of withdrawal. These drugs should be treated with extreme care, and should only be prescribed as a last resort, if everything else fails.
