I feel like this is the method for a lot of science. Take gel electrophoresis in marine biology for example: you take a water sample; and to see if a species of fish passed through that water, you shock the water on a piece of gel. If the species _was_ in the water, dark bands will appear on the gel. (There's more to this obviously, but that's the short and basic explanation)
