These elections will actually matter.
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
Iran is about to hold a national election that could shape the country's future for a generation - potentially even more so than the presidential elections in 2009, when "green movement" protests signaled public outrage with the regime, and in 2013, when voters elevated the moderate Hassan Rouhani on a promise of economic and diplomatic opening.
On February 26, Iranians will vote for candidates for their parliament and for a body called the Assembly of Experts - which, though few outside Iran have heard of it, could be in a position to radically alter Iran's politics.

@Nosirt
@Nosirt 6 жыл бұрын
So the system is kind of like the Electoral College where the "Experts" are *supposed* to elect someone but the differences is that they do not (or rather have no way of knowing) what the public wants as Iran doesn't have a mass General election for the Ayatollah. But really we say The Supreme Leader is not elected just because the people that are chosen in the Expert body are pretty much always gonna be Conservative and the Leader can pretty much overturn everything the President does and really holds everything power. Calling Iran a democracy is kind of like calling Holy Roman Empire a democracy, sure the ruler is kind of elected but the position he is elected is a life long dictatorship. The thing is kind of just revolving, Bring a conservative in, Irans moderate 90% *have* to vote for him and he is elected and same happens for the Leader.

One important thing VOX didn't mention about the system correctly is that guardian council , a filter that nobody can get through except people who are trusted and align with supreme leader ideology. So if you wanna be a candidate for MP or president you have be assessed by Guardian Council. In other words they are the one who decide who you can vote for. And trust me all candidates are the same in term of ideology . So don't think for a second that this is a democracy ! And if you wanna know how these moderate people like Rouhani got elected as president , I have to say it's a calculated move from Supreme leader and Guardian Council to get rid of sanctions and tune down international tensions until they feel strong again . In conclusion if you think those moderate people can make their way up to the supreme leader position and change Iran as we know it , YOU ARE SO WRONG!!!

The term "SUPREME LEADER" is a western construct. In Iran he is simply known as "the leader of the revolution" and he can be removed by a council of experts who are elected by the people, so the notion of an absolute dictatorship is more or less jaded. Iran has a leader or wise man at the very top of the food chain because that person pretty much regulates the system, making sure that the country is on the right track, so the government doesn't get too corrupt, doesn't turn into a dictatorship (like Ahmadinejad tried doing), doesn't become a puppet of foreign interests. To understand the need for such a system, one has to understand Iran's recent history, especially the CIA inspired coup of 1953.

As a result people have very limited choices in which all the nominees are being chosen by the Guardian council aligning to leader's ideals. So it's not a democracy by no mean when people can only choose between selected nominees.

The reason why Iran was the only country the capitalist west and the communist east both feared is because they fought in the name of God which meant destroying greedy capitalists and corrupt communists. The history would be different if Khamenei not coming to power... People in Iran don't like him.

Well the supreme leader is indirectly elected using a committee directly elected by people. So that part is no very true. However, majority of people love the supreme leader and this mades him so powerful that committee cant actually disagree or change him while alive. So you should consider that part about Iranian people. :| Another fun fact, in early years of revolution, supreme leader's power was far more limited than today and president had far more power. Well, one president abused the power and everything changed ever since :|

Extremely superficial video which I've come to expect from most Western sources. what the video ignores or doesn't mention is that while there is an 'election' for the Assembly of Experts, like all elections in Iran, it is carefully choreographed with only approved candidates allowed to participate.
@lemortedbrian6070
@lemortedbrian6070 3 жыл бұрын
kind of the same everywhere though, in the US we have candidates who's policies are bought by lobby groups from foreign countries specifically saudi arabia and israel. Take trump for example, who used to be hated back when republicans had other candidates. But he got the $$$ and business connections so he became the republican candidate. Its usually a case of the "lesser evil" more than genuinely liking any of our options. Especially with trump vs hillary.

Let me clarify a few things here( as an Iranian) : 1) We have another system called the guardian council. The guardian council, completely dominated by conservatives and very close to the supreme leader, picks who can run for the assembly of experts and who can't( filters candidates) 2) So far, the guardian council has rejected very important moderate and reformist figures such as Hassan Khomeini from running for the assembly of experts. 3) The guardian council has only allowed a few moderate and reformists to run for the assembly of experts, but it has approved numerous conservatives ( ratio of approved conservative to moderate is about 9-1 ) . As a result, no matter how hard the moderates try, the balance of power is heavily in favour of conservatives in the assembly of experts.

I'm an Iranian and i can confirm most of the people are moderates. But the thing, the elections are not completely executed in this video. You see... the volunteers who sign up for election, should be accepted by our own government before people can vote. Thus, like current year election, people could only vote to conservatives and no moderates were present. So don't be fooled by this short videos about our country. Our government is dictatorship which only the supreme leader decides the fate of the country. and half of our people are fooled by this elections.

You forgot to tell about the Guardian Council. They are chosen by the supreme leader, and all the candidates of all the elections should be qualified by them in advance. As they are appointed by the supreme leader, they always choose the candidates in a way that at the end of the day, the majority of expert council would be in favour of supreme leather. So I think the Iran’s situation won’t change a lot.
