As explained by Professor Zrinzo, MR Guided Focused Ultrasound is made possible by the marriage of two technologies; Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ultrasound. The role of MRI in this marriage is first and foremost to depict and identify key structures within the brain which need to then be targeted by ultrasound waves. However, MRI can also be used in a novel way to measure temperature within the brain, using a technique called MR Thermography. MR Thermography enables the treatment team to create and measure small increase in temperature within the target brain tissue to 'test' and confirm that treatment is taking place in exactly the right position for maximum therapeutic benefit, before a permanent lesion is created.
As explained by Professor Zrinzo, Queen Square has been involved in neuroimaging research for many years, so that the MRI technology available at the Queen Square Imaging Centre is optimised to perform this important role.
