@@largesleepermadness6648 i thought about installing rivnuts when i did this, but then i would have had to pull out the wiring for the heated mirrors and antenna's to get the mirror bracket far enough away to be able to install the rivnuts it was faster and easier to just take the one bolt out of the window track to gain enough room to get the nuts on. next time i have to take them off ill probably regret not doing it however...lol

Great to see you back Ezra, this update is super insightful - especially because Old Red had 200.000 hard working miles under her belt. If I may give a tip regarding the dog hair in the carpet: a Lily Brush (that's the brand name) will get all the hair out with ease. Or a silicone squeegee will also work. Thanks for this video and all the best from Holland!

Thanks for doing this update. I really enjoyed watching your videos when you built this, and whenever I see big projects like this I always wonder how they hold up after some use. It looks to me like Old Red is holding up well overall, the wear you've noted seems relatively to be expected for your environment with all the road salt. Nice work!

Man, I see so many people stripping the chassis only to apply garbage paint. Let me give you the tip, & you'll only ever have to do it the one time. Use hard 2 part epoxy, industrial coating heavy over thinly applied etch primer. You'll use all of a 20 litre drum, & perhaps 8 to 10 litres of primer, thin is the go here. Observe the application temp stipulation, its crucial to the hardening. The epoxy is promoted to harden with chemical heat, at specific seasonal & climatic temps. The best is marine coating, got from a supplier to the fishing trawler repair yards. Think about it, & you'll see why its so good. & BTW, the best & cheapest way to knock flash rust after sandblasting before you prime is... vinegar, not the salad kind @ 6% acidity, but the cleaning grade, marketed as "2X" or "Double Strength. Get it from the supermarket, I'm in Western Australia so I get it from Woolworths. It will even convert heavy scale rust to black oxide is you keep it wet for long enough. About 30 minutes for light flash, maybe overnight for heavy scale. The trick is to keep it damp. I'm retired now, but I ran roadtrains out from Perth to our remote mines. The paint I used on all the truck, trailer, & dolly rolling stock was International Paints 956, its made here right by the shipbuilders. Hard as, & salt doesn't bother it. I did a lot of dirt roads & it withstands stone chipping for a couple of years before you can see bare metal & then its only a spot treatment. You will have similar products. BTW if you run in a salty environment, the best way to remount hardware to your chassis is by using Sikaflex as a liquid gasket on the mating faces, but its the through chassis bolts that suffer most readily, so just put a dab of Sika on each end of the shaft. I've just watched your gearbox vid, so I know you like to have fun. Sorry that you'll only have to do it once this way.

Old Red is the OG Rock Star for sure. Once a year I have to revisit the build like watching one of my fave old movies. Love to see you take a Pete Cabover and do a radical build like a stand up aerodyne style top and maybe a small apartment set up... maybe re-purpose some hydraulic rams from some other dump trailer or something to make the whole thing hoist out of the way to work on the engine and what not. If anybody could do a number like that You could do it Ezra 😎👍👍

Dang! Did I say it right? Don't use house paint on your chassis, Ezra. Use ship's paint instead. Its a special kind of 2 part Epoxy & you'll use all of a 20 litre drum. I'm in Western Australia, so its International Paints 254, maybe check it out online, so you know what you're looking for in your neck of the woods. Its the hardest paint there is, but its ambient temperature sensitive on application, so take note. (Also important is to apply paint on a warm metal so as not to trap moisture under it. heat up a piece of cold steel plate with a gas torch & look at the moisture evaporating to see just what I mean). Nothing bothers it, I used it on my KW T904 & trailing stock, doing apx 400,000 kms a year, 20% of it on gravel because I was running trains out to our desert mines, & it took about 4 years to begin showing stone chip damage in the susceptible areas, axles & diff housings, lower landing legs, etc. Another important thing to avoid salt & moisture corrosion is to use a liquid gasket under any mounting on the frame rails, or between double frame rails. not sure if you have them? Here we do because they're tonnage rated for various multiple trailer configurations. If you do, use Sikaflex, its the stuff used on the teak decks of yachts, & can be got from any chandler. Both the paint & the Sika will cost more, but you will only ever do it once. Dress chrome is porous, & short lived because of it, & modern cheap chrome is single dip straight on the bare metal. Old school chrome lasted so because it was multi dip, copper, brass, chrome. If you go stainless pipes, maybe just buy the bends, & cut your own straights. BTW, to knock surface rust from anything if you can't blast it, use vinegar, not the salad stuff which is 4% acid, use the industrial grade 9%, here we can buy it at the supermarket. Immerse if you can, if not soak a padding & apply it to a surface with a plastic bag taped on over it. for fairly heavy surface rust leave it on overnight. This converts it to black oxide, so hit it with a wire brush to remove what will flake off. Totally agree with the rubber flooring too, & I really liked medium heavy ripstop type canvas seat covers, but then here its hot. & here's the tip for cutting & laying flooring from generic sheet or roll quickly & accurately. To make your template, cut some cardboard comfortably smaller than the true dimensions, then run a small block of wood (smaller the better if you are going around corners) against the wall & a pencil on the other side of the block to mark the pattern board. Then use the pattern plus the side of the block to accurately transfer the shape in true dimension to your material. Where you have protrusions, eg gear lever, pedals etc to deal with you must make your pattern in multiple pieces, so work from center out, remember that center doesn't have to be actual center, place center so as to split the protrusion, eg you may have 18 inches on one side & only 12 on the other, its still your center line for the purpose of your pattern. You may choose side to side, or fore & aft, or both, in the case of a complex pattern. Enjoy! & see, you don't need a Harvard degree, just common sense & the ability to drive anything. So a degree is worthless. BTW a T904 is the Aust built equivalent of your W900, but with the cab raise about 18 inches & commensurately taller bonnet to accomodate the massive cooling required by us. Mine was the very 1st of the model, actually it was KW's heavy spec show truck used on the model's release. 170 ton rated, C16 (NZ) 22 Series Roadranger, steel on spiders, 6 rod, 6x500 ltr round round tanks, Aerodyne 60 inch. Beast of a truck, putting out 600HP @ 26psi boost, it did over 5 mil on the same motor & box pulling triples & quads, I fitted it up with an electric pre-start oiling system, replaced the coolant drain plugs with sacrificial anodes, against electrolysis, ditched air scoops for Donaldson pre-cleaner bowls, placed a large capacity inline sedimenter to protect the filters & injectors, & used Cat mining equip gear oil. 8 times the price but it never gets changed. Another thing, after crossing water, or regular condensation checks on cool diffs, I'd crack open the drain plugs to let out any accumulated water, in addition to raised dryer filter breathers. Hope you found something of use here, from an uneducated, Aussie, truckie.

I’m not here to argue with you, but POR 15 is meant to be painted over rust. It doesn’t hold up on clean prepped metal and will flake off the way you showed. That being said, from this point on, I’d wire wheel the bad spots and hit it with rustoleum and use that to touch it up from here on out. Big fan of the Old Red build. Your videos have helped me countless times while working on mine 🤝🏻

@@MookieMan1 my brother in Christ. POR stands for Paint Over Rust. Sure they make a system for applying to bare metal, but the average user skips reading all that technical crap, buys a gallon of the top coat and slops it on with a brush. I’ve sprayed it on two truck frames with success, so I’m not a naysayer of the product.

didn't work out for me, i don't think ill be trying it again. some area's of the frame were prepped well some were new clean steel some area's were wire brushed scuffed surface rust some area's were painted over exiting paint. all of its peeling everywhere no mater what the prep was, to me that's a bad product, if it was holding up in some area's and not others id be more inclined to say user error.

Ezra, painting those air cleaners with a heavy-duty, pickup truck, bedliner type coating might help prevent rock chips. Paint the fenders and around the cab & berth roofs black but paint the tops of the roofs white. Not many folks see up there anyway. I never liked baking my butt in dark-roofed cabs and sleepers either! If you ever get tired of shining up those pretty tanks, you could paint them black as well. For the strip just below your driver's door window that has lost its paint, fit a vinyl sticker with your name on it. Duplicate the same on your passenger's door with your dog's name. You have many admirers out here. This ol' 4-million miler sometimes wishes he could fix up a classic and get back to trucking with it. Thanks for posting.

POR was great back when it started... But like everything that gets a good reputation, they cheap out and change stuff over the years and all they got going it the name. Couple vehicle's I did years ago are still holding up, but I regret using it the last 2 times. As for front cow catcher... find Herd dealer and check them out. Seen quite a few in accidents and they hold up pretty good.

I totally agree with you on the vinyl floor only way to go for a working truck in the mud/dirt etc. No1 suggestion for your air cleaners once you repaint them get a auto wrapper to wrap a durable clear auto wrap to the front of them and it will prevent stone chips to your new paint and you won't even tell it's on there. Could do the fenders and other prone rock chip areas as well. No2: as for your mud flaps to prevent them blowing back in the wind, I've used before on trucks a piece wire rope bent into a "U" shape for the size of mudflap and join it in at the ends with some brackets at the top on mud guard behind mudflap. They stop them blowing in but if you pass through a field or the likes and a clump dirt or something it will allow them to fold in to avoid damage or ripping off as they brush past object then they self fold back out to flat position again. Use fairly thick diameter at least thickness of your base of your thumb 👍.

Always liked the darker red roof caps Noah. I vote for a darker red on the front fenders. Either way, great looking truck!

I like the chrome on the intakes myself and the door guards too. Maybe swap the old fender guards to the new trailer and put a new set on the truck? I think that would look nice since the trailer already has red framework. Anyway good to see her holding up it was fun watching her come together. Stay safe out there brother.

She’s a clean ol work truck. Only way to keep it perfect is to park it in the shop. You’re braver than me putting it out there for everyone to nit pick that sweet unit. I don’t let even my friends get close to my truck 😂

Cool video! Nice to see what has held up and what hasn’t. I wrapped the inside of my stainless steel drop visor. I was worried about paint peeling later if I didn’t prep it the right way. So far so good only time will tell. If the wrap fails then I just get a heat gun and peel it off though no big deal. Truck still looks very classy regardless of the flaws

When or if you do paint the truck may I recommend you use an etch primer, depending on how much you want the red paint to stand out a light colour base white, cream or pink with make the paint pop, also in australia there are vehicle vinyl wrappers and put a thick clear vinyl over the paint to stop rock chips and stops paint flake off from pressure washing

Been with ya since beginning. Always thought you did a great job on a working truck; and it shows. I like the chrome pieces. Agree with the black fenders. Was wondering about the air horns Mrs Ez bought you. Still working? The horns that is!!!

One things for certain, youve had alot less problems with "old red" than you would have had with a new or s/h truck , colour match front wings and hood and maybe a white cab/sleeper roof to deflect the summer sun, maybe a light chassis sand blast and re black the chassis in/out, plus a good machine polish of all the stainless parts, maybe go for chrome breathers to ?" old reds" a keeper and you know it, keep on trucking Ezrider359,....

I'm glad the engine/transmission combo aren't giving you any troubles Ezra. 🙂👍 I'm with you 100%, it's hard to beat Rustoleum paint. I've heard too many bad things about POR-15 to try it 🔧

I agree, vinyl floor is better than carpet. I do like to have a little carpet in the sleeper though for those cold winter mornings
can we fix this?!?!
