Isn't trucking fun. Glad to see somebody else is having fun with everything. High pressure line blew out on AC. Replace it blew the line out to the sleeper. Replace that and then blew the new line off at the compressor. The line got so hot it blistered the line and melted the plastic loom off of it. Can't figure out why it's get so hot now. So in town I have to keep motor fan on.

Well that certainly sucks a big root! Something a buddy of mine learned from his Pop’s was when draining oil out of Engine, Rear End’s, Transmission, etc that you want to see what sort of unhappy parts and pieces, etc is not where it is supposed be is to place a gallon paint can or #10 “tin can” 1like canned vegetables and beans etc come in for institutions, restaurants, etc and place that in your larger drain pan and let the oil etc drain into the gallon / #10 can. After whatever you are done draining the oil etc from the Engine, Rear Ends, Transmission, etc you can carefully decant/pour off the oil etc in the gallon/#10 tin can to see what bad news has drained out. I know this sounds rather simplistic and something anyone could think of and it is but it also beats cleaning out a larger drain bucket and then feeling around in the drain bucket/pan for potentially bad news that came out when the oil etc was drained. I have one of those large drain pans on wheels and pump to empty the that pan into my used oil storage container. The roll around drain pan I have is has a piece of heavy screen over the opening so you can’t drop a drain plug etc into the drain pan and because of that I drilled a few 1/2 holes about halfway up the gallon bucket/#10 tin can so I don’t have to decant/pour off as much oil etc to see if there is any bad news in the bottom of it. Besides the advantages I have already mentioned already the best one is it is certainly easier to wipe out/ wash out (spray down with Brake Kleen) than the large drain bucket/pan. Additionally if you have a friend that works at a cafe or dinner that gets vegetables, beans, soup etc in #10 cans than other giving them a quick rinse so you don’t have food stuffs in the cans and when you are done with the can it just gets dumped and tossed.

Totally understand being behind on videos. I've got a few months worth of backlog that I haven't edited either. I've been watching your channel since you first got Old Red. Sorry to hear that you've had these issues, but it sounds like the overall end result has been a great truck that's far more interesting than a new one. It's always something on these big vehicles. I'm about to change the air compressor on my bus (Prevost with a Series 60) after having to change all the exhaust rockers on the engine due to the rollers pitting. Looking forward to your videos with snow on the ground over the summer when you get around to editing them.

I feel your pain Ezra, our Detroit is pushing 714hp at the flywheel, torque is a bit beyond 2250. Scheid Diesel provided me with a tractor sled pull clutch. It amazes me how little most truckers know about torque and torque multiplication through gearing. Scheid showed us dyno results from a 600/2050 Cat with 18 SPD and 3:36 rear diffs. The trans first gear was 11.36 and coupled with 3:36 rears, the torque is over 118,000lbs in first gear. It blows my mind that drivers actually think the HP/tq ratings are capable of moving 40 tons from a dead stop going uphill, lol, 1850 or 2050 torque straight through the driveline would never move the truck efficiently.

But, just be damn glad that you have the shop, the tools, and the knowledge to be able to do the repairs yourself! Shop labor at a shop would have been an additional $5,000.00 minimum. Also, they would have wanted to mark up the transmission cost. If you had to hire a shop to do that job, I wouldn't have been surprised to see that the total was $15 grand! I know of shop labor rates now at $250.00 an hour. And again, they'll mark up that transmission cost also! Take your ~$8,300.00 plus a $4,000.00 markup plus ten hours of labor at $250.00 per hour = $14,800.00! A shop would have raped you! It's not good that the original one failed so soon and that the warranty was history but... you got 'er done and preserved a helluva lot of money! Good job!

Did the previous trans have a halo oil tube? In my opinion the halo really helps when you’ve got decent horsepower. It serves to keep a constant flow of oil over the main drive and over drive gears to keep them cool.

Upgraded my grain truck got a 1974 IHC at auction really cheap saying I can fix that 60 hours later I had it on the road took 12 gallons of grain and assorted mouse parts out of the heater box who knew mousez could pack that much grain into a heater box. Took me a long time to sort out wiring issues had no signal or head lights and every wire is black have to read the number stamped on wire if you have wiring diagram for reference helps. Air lines on shifter were switched so got that sorted so the 1974 has the Cummins 290 someone at auction jammed a rock behind decompressor so that was not to hard to figure out. i only paid $2000 and box will hold 800 bushels so all good.

Dude... I replaced rear main seal, clutch, and tranny like 2 months time. Temporary, i replaced the input shaft on the tranny when I did the rear main and clutch. I think I spent like $10,400. Rear main seal, upgraded clutch, upgraded tranny. I went from 1650 lbs torque to the nice 2050 lbs torque. I love the way you just say "flip" it, I'll manhandle it. The 20918 tranny is almost correct. 20... 2050 lbs feet torque, 9 stands for 9 splines "grooves"(for the unknowing" and 18 is for how many gears... 18 speed yo.
@Ezrider359

I'm glad everything worked out for you Ezra, Nobody likes break downs of any kind but you are very fortunate that you can fix most of your breakdowns yourself, and it looks like you do it very well. I had a thought on your compressor exploding, although thankfully it has not happened to me, i was told by a few fella's that it happens because of back pressure feeding back to the compressor, I don't have enough mechanic skills to know where back pressure would even be coming from, I don't know if this will help you but if it does let me know I am curious if they are right. I hope your breakdowns are done for a long while Ezra ride easy my friend.

Some more quality work iv learned over the years bigger is always better in my area if your not running 46 rears and minimum 16 front you don't have a truck and with big power you need gears and I notice too your hauling probly quiet a bit heavier then most states so that all plays a part that one issue with building a truck to the extent like Ole red you try going Thebes cost effective route where in theory should be good but then she goes all truck on you and craps on your weekend plans lol
