I love how she completely glossed over the effect pipelines have on indigenous communities. That “pinhole” sized leak can contaminate MILES of land and sources of drinking water that are already so scarce on reservations.

When I was growing up, instead of teaching me how to socialize with other kids, helping me with my homework, and letting me do stuff I wanted to participate in like girl scouts, my dad would give me political lectures and feed me propaganda like PragerU. Trampling over native land, dehousing, and not to mention sex trafficking. Enbridge workers have been caught in a sex trafficking ring, and those are just the ones who have been caught. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that indigenous women and girls go missing constantly while their land is being exploited. Those two things have always gone hand in hand, sigh. "Pipelines are clearly the safest, here's why: they don't move!" Quick correction there Doc Fergie-Rod: they're not *supposed* to move. But things like shoddy construction, neglected maintenance, poor foundations, groundwater level, seismic activity, sudden temperature changes, seasonal weather, soil erosion, poor building materials, sudden pressure spikes, digital and mechanical faillures and even friggin wildlife and falling trees can suddenly cause your immobile pipeline to move maybe an inch or two too much at a previously unknown weak point. That's the whole point and one of the big factors why pipelines start to leak: when the thing that really wasn't supposed to move *STARTS TO FUCKING MOVE.*
@williamchamberlain2263
@williamchamberlain2263 2 жыл бұрын
Or when they fail an inspection, but the operating company doesn't legally _have_ to make repairs, so they carry on using it till it ruptures and pours hundreds of litres of oil per second into the environment _really efficiently._
@spOOkytimes
@spOOkytimes Жыл бұрын
I think that their point of pipelines moving fossil fuels more efficiently is sound since it takes a ton of fossil fuels to move them via truck and train. BUT as you and other commentors have said, it is so efficient that it can leak substantially before being shut off. The people who own these pipelines do not want these pipelines to leak oil purely due to the money they are losing (literally thousands off dollars per hour) and the environment is secondary if not even on their mind at all.

As an Indigenous person, here’s the comparison I always use when it comes to protecting sites Indigenous People consider sacred: what if they built a resort around Jesus’s tomb instead of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre? Why are Indigenous cultures and religions seen as less valid than other religions? People treat us and those we consider sacred as just fun little made up things we’ve created, when in reality, the complexity of Indigenous religions and philosophies is far more difficult to understand than any other, at least in my opinion. Defending Indigenous Lands from extractive industries saves Indigenous lives by preventing MMIW cases from rising, by keeping the air, soil, and water clean and usable, by keeping native wildlife alive, and prevents the displacement of Indigenous People from their homes. And it protects what tribes consider sacred to them, which isn’t any less valid than if a site were sacred to Christians. Please join us in the fight against extractive industries and US imperialism, and start decolonizing your lifestyles, habits, values, and mindsets.

right??? hell, even the "christmas- I mean HOLIDAY party!" thing could be ripe for commentary, since you do get that type of person who just assumes like, hannukah is jewish christmas, diwali is hindu christmas, etc etc, and then never bothers to learn or respect that non-christian religions won't be exact expies of christianity with a few words changed. but the writers at pragerU are stymied by their closedmindedness and lack of imagination, so they literally cannot conceptualise a reason people would dislike the "christma- HOLIDAY!" thing other than everyone silently wanting status quo christmas nonsense forever.

I feel like there were a few 'jokes' that were so close to actually being okay, but not quite. Assuming someone in a minority group celebrates a specific holiday just because they're in that minority group seems like something you'd see in the office or whatever, and is a genuinely not that terrible joke, but then they go and say that the reason that's a problem isn't because of the racism or because of assuming "Hanukah is just Christmas for Jews", but because "everyone celebrates Christmas" and Hanukah and Diwali aren't real holidays we should care about. Instead of making a joke about how someone can be performatively progressive or even themselves being racist when doing the "black Santa" bit, they make the punchline be that "wouldn't it be crazy if black women were real, everyone knows you can only get presents from white men" I think what they pointed out at the very beginning of the sketch is what shows it best, when the guy starts shaking his head with his hand on his face after all that had been said so far was "some people who work here might be Jewish, and celebrate Hanukah". The thing they think would be crazy isn't the whole caricature of a liberal who wants to 'cancel' Christmas, the thing they think would be crazy is the IDEA that Jewish people exist, and that there are SOME people who don't celebrate Christmas.

The issue with big oil is we need to treat it like we are weening off a hard drug. It has obviously been proven to be the most efficient way to produce energy, albeit all of its horrific flaws. What we need to do is dump a lot more money into researching the alternative forms of energy solar, nuclear, wind, hydro etc. Over time as those become more efficient and, capable they can then finally replace the crude oil industry we have been relying on for far too long. Just my opinion though

The problem, of course, is that we don't really have much time left. Even if everyone was on-board with a gradual transition, and there weren't wealthy individuals and corporations actively undermining institutional and political progress, it still wouldn't be enough to mitigate near-catastrophic (for humans) climate disasters. The assumption of continued fossil fuel reliance is that we MUST continue the same modes, models, and levels of economic output (with the same incentives and priorities), that is continue late-stage capitalism in a potentially post-climate crisis world. I'd argue the two are incompatible. Modernity isn't really worth saving if it's just going to kill (most of) us in the end. Degrowth is a necessary aspect of any long-term climate solution and does not require new technological advances to be implemented.

@princessstrawberry4623

The problem is that the goal of comedy is to make people laugh (obviously), and to do that, you need to make jokes by relating to people, so that you can use that relation to make them laugh. Empathy is necessary for comedy to work, but the concept of empathy is diametrically opposed to the principles of the right-wing. If you could understand what other people were feeling, and cared, you wouldn't be able to see all the suffering caused by your rhetoric and still do nothing to change it. You wouldn't be able to see a peaceful protest being shut down without thinking "hey, I sure wouldn't like it if the police beat MY daughter to death". You couldn't deny so many people health care based on arbitrary things or even money without thinking to yourself "dang, having no health care would be terrible, everyone should get that".

The Keystone XL Pipeline project support makes no sense. The Keystone Pipeline already exists, the Keystone XL Pipeline is just a shorter, wider pipeline that bypasses the part of the original pipeline that avoided a protected area. This is also a pipeline which transfers tar-sands which are notoriously more harmful and harder to clean up. In fact the Keystone Pipeline has already leaked hundreds of thousands of gallons of these tar-sands. It only hurts Americans/America and literally the only benefactor is an oil company, and a non-American oil company at that. Then there's this BS line 5 by Enbridge in Michigan where they're trying to run a pipeline across the great lakes. Infuriating!

The second video is bad because it's another example of conservatives twisting leftist gripes with liberals (assuming they know liberals and leftists are different in the context of American politics) and putting them into a bigoted message. Yes there are some liberals that do pull performative shit like this to make them feel better about themselves, without considering the repercussions on the people they claim to be helping. But I'm sure everyone here damn well knows that Prager U doesn't actually care about protecting the rights of minorities and wanting a more just society. Leftists crap on performative crap like those shown in the video because 1. It doesn't actually have a major impact or any impact at all, sure it might make a few feel a bit more safe and comfortable, but that means shit when it is mostly temporary. 2. It can sometimes harm the people that are "being helped". (See how the blackout hashtag done during the start of the BLM protests nearly 2 years ago on social media completely blocked out helpful information and fundraising events for days. And when that died down a shit ton of people stopped caring to even look up those helpful posts.) 3. The people behind those actions when push comes to shove, like when the rights of minorities are being stripped away or a protest they could join happens will, at best, do the bare minimum, more often, do nothing, or, at worst, be a straight up hypocrite and gladly support people that harm minorities. Does Prager U care about any of that? Of course not. The video basically says that this is how all leftists act (which it blatantly isn't true) and that because they are leftists it is stupid and should be made fun of. And also because it doesn't matter if the support was performative or not, it was support of a leftist cause period, so therefore it is bad. Conservatives get incredibly whiny during Pride month, because any support, genuine or not, is bad. It's so fucking aggravating because it's like, I agree that liberals that do shit like this are fucking stupid and annoying, but for completely different reasons that aren't bigoted.
