How ISIS Took Control of My City

Niniay Mohammad grew up in Marawi City and had just graduated as a teacher on May 23, 2017-the same day that local militants from the Maute ISIS Group launched an attack to take control of her home city. Although she had seen text messages being sent around saying that there would be an attack by the Maute ISIS Group, Niniay thought they were just rumours.
Niniay was able to escape the city after two days, but the siege lasted for five months.The conflict resulted in mass displacement, over a thousand deaths and the destruction of the city. This is Niniay’s story of how she survived the initial days.

While telling ur story my dear cousin, it flashes back my experience too during that time and can’t help my tears from falling while watching. Being there for 5day amidst of exchanging of bullets was not a joke. It was definitely a traumatizing experience not for us but for everybody who were there. No electricity, no food, no reception and waiting for a miracle to escape. Alhamdulillah we were given a chance to live. 😭

Its one of the biggest intelligence disaster for the Philippines. The Duterte administration allocated billions of pesos on the presidential intelligence fund(which isn't a intelligence institution and have no oversight) and yet this happened. During an interview with President duterte he implied that at one point he threatened/challenged the Maute-ISIS Group to come down from the jungle and fight them head on. Knowing the area of operation of these terrorist is around Lanao Del sur province, specifically Marawi city where the maute group leaders home city.
