People somehow feel more sympathy for that than the multitude of city-bombings like Dresden and the Blitz. People don't realize that bombing civilian cities was considered a normal and viable strategy ever since the idea of the homefront was created in the Great War. Yet, people look back on the bombings and say how evil they were. Yes, they were, but would a naval blockade starving the entire country be any less evil? Would a land invasion where tired, angry soldiers have more of a reason to kill any civilian they see after what they saw on Okinawa and Saipan? I'm rambling, but I just get really peeved when people misunderstand warfare and how truly close to hell it is.

You think every historian in the world is part of a big conspiracy to make the victor look good? Or maybe, just maybe, the "bad guys" don't get public support for their war because most civilians care to see their families not die in some pointless war. A war without public backing is doomed to fail, which nearly always means if you're not fighting for a just cause, you're going to lose. As for the Ukraine-Russia war, I've definitely seen one beheading video a few years back and I hear there's another circulating right now (I'm not interested in seeing another man lose their head in a video). It's not a good look for the Russians.

@harryML9754
@harryML9754 3 ай бұрын
Having colonies doesn't necessarily mean you're expansionist, many of the pacific colonies were pre-established tens, if not hundreds of years ago. Active expansion wasn't really a thing by that point The Philippines were sceded in a war between Spain and the US, a war caused in part by the US support of cuban revolts against the Spanish Empire. So not really the brightest example of expansionist policy.

expansionist is expanding into other territories and taking them, not holding previously taken territories. there was expansionism before and that is why those asian countries were colonies, but literally when germany and japan started being expansionists the war started. compare that to expansionism in africa where european countries just came in and claimed the land as their own like it was their right. thats what he means with expansionism is kinda dead at that point

Japan was isolated from the rest of the world until 1850. Which country forced Japan to conclude an unequal treaty and force it to open its doors? Which country forced Japan to buy resources and trade with them starting in 1900? Which country tried to divide China using opium? Which country tried to sell opium to Japan after China lost the Opium War? Why didn't the countries that ruled Asia make people work for low wages and build schools and hospitals?

12:46 "I find it brain-dead" I lived in Japan for 9 years. Their culture is very heavily rooted in their perception of "honor". For us westerners, ideas like kamikaze and seppuku/harakiri due to a "failed expansionist plan" are unfathomable and suicide is viewed as cowardly. It's hard to explain in words, but the Japanese do not have this view. Falling in war, to the Japanese, has been for centuries, viewed as a great service/honor to their nation. The easiest way I can put it would be: The western world focuses on the growth of individuals. The eastern world focuses on the growth of the group. On a much lighter note, you can see this difference just by watching Japanese baseball. It's a totally different game.
@JohnSmith-j7n

Actually Japan has a long standing history and tradition of "生活" which means "living". It is generally seen as a bad thing to die in Japan and most Japanese people are naturally opposed to being killed on an instinctual level.

While the U.S. and many others believed that Russia’s involvement felt necessary to sway the Japanese, most people attribute the bombs to their surrender considering the quickness with which the emperor asked his wartime cabinet to surrender under all conditions after the second bomb had dropped.
@theblackspark2644
@theblackspark2644 3 ай бұрын
The purpose of the bombs was to intimidate the Soviets. Japan would have surrendered sooner if FDR hadn't demanded "unconditional" surrender. Any idea when the last historical call for an unconditional surrender was? It was during Romes war against the Carthaginians. The Roman's utterly destroyed Carthage.

the reality of the world and war is that the strong determine the rules not the era you are in.....if America instead of being what it was during WW2 turned around and changed its mind and started conquering others if they won then they could annex other countries as they will regardless of international law and if enough of their military backed the government they could even make their own people serfs. Activists who don't realize this is as possible who only look at politics and argue that its about their rights don't realize that without a government no one has rights as someone armed better than themselves can come along and enforce their rules on you regardless of your laws. the reality is military power outweighs any law on the face of this earth and galaxy. and no chain of arguement is going to change that fact. and no im not arguing for that to happen it is just how reality works.
