In January 2021 the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) contained 638 million barrels of oil. During his term, President Joe Biden ordered the release of approximately 274 million barrels of oil from the (SPR). This was a POLITICAL move aimed at addressing high gas prices for American consumers at the pumps, caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. These releases reduced the SPR to its lowest level since September 1983, with about 364 million barrels remaining as of early 2024. It took 36 years from 1984 through 2020 to fill the SPR to 638 million barrels. Joe Biden sold 43% of the total SPR in two years in order to lower gas prices. This reduction has led to critical concerns about the country’s ability to respond to future supply shocks. The releases occurred mainly in 2021 and 2022. During this time, global oil production amounted to 94 million barrels per day in 2021 and in 2022. So over this 2 year period (730 days), Joe’s SPR oil release equated to about 1 day of world oil production. The average price of oil sold from the SPR during the releases in 2022 ranged around $96 per barrel. The cost to replenish a barrel of oil to the SPR in recent months has averaged between $70 to $90 per barrel. During President Joe Biden's term (3.4 years as of May 2024) approximately 20.13 million barrels of oil have been purchased to refill the SPR at an average price of $76.12 per barrel. I doubt additional purchases will be made for the rest of the year since Congress is broke and will end up with a projected 1.5 trillion dollar deficit. Over a 4 year period, Joe has replaced 5 million barrels a year to the SPR. Since he released 274 million barrels and replaced 20 million barrels - 254 million more barrels need to be purchased to bring the SPR back to normal level. At the rate Joe is replacing the SPR it will take 51 years to fill back the SPR, which takes one to 2075. Joe will have been long gone from the American scene, so it won’t be his problem. Thanks Joe. As usual, it will be the American taxpayer’s problem to refill the SPR. Or America could do nothing and hope the world lives in peace and harmony and not worry about an important part of America’s energy insurance policy. Does anyone know what the price of oil will be in the next 48 years? Double, triple, 5X, 10X or more. World oil production has basically plateaued, major oil fields are 30-60 years old and will not last forever, demand is still rising as third world countries are trying to industrialize and pull themselves out of poverty, and most of the world has been surveyed for oil with mostly smaller oil fields found. What about refineries to convert the oil into gasoline? Problem. The Marathon Refinery in Garyville, Louisiana, built in 1976, is considered the last major oil refinery built in the United States. It's the country's second-largest refinery, with a capacity of 200,000 barrels of oil per day. Yep, the newest major oil refinery is celebrating its 48th birthday. Maybe the sun or wind or nuclear fusion will be our salvation. Maybe 100% EV sales will solve our oil problems. But not now, EV share of total new-vehicle sales from Jan-Mar 2024 accounted for 7.3% of new sales. So did Joe hit a home run by selling oil at $96 dollars per barrel? Only the future will tell.

Traders knew there was going to be a lot of pressure from both the US and Europe against price increases so they put their bets that prices would fall. Other traders had to follow or get undercut. This always happens in a disruption. The old, established order being disrupted tries to protect itself from extinction. Never works, but they can delay the inevitable for a while sometimes. It's now cheaper by far to add solar capacity than to build new fossil fuel plants to generate power. What's happening, according to IEA (never a bastion of wise projection) is that investment in new solar capacity is exploding. As for vehicles, despite the bad press the oil and legacy car companies are busy planting in the press, the conversion to electric vehicles continues apace. Prices for EVs have now reached parity with legacy gas/diesel powered vehicles. In China, the largest car market in the world, all of the old legacy companies (i.e. Toyota, Honda, GM, Mercedes, etc) can't give their gas/diesel vehicles away and are one by one pulling out or going down. By 2030, EVs will be 80% or better of all new vehicle sales. Electricity generation will be largely solar/wind/hydro. That's a huge positive.

The US is a net exporter in the petroleum space, a really solid exporter of LNG. This has been years in the making. We could very easily pretty well put guardrails on Saudi as the defacto price setter (due to largest volumes for export purposes)... I can think of about 10 simple steps to do it in a way they'd never control anything again.
