How k. d. lang writes songs (and how it helped me write one of my own)

Welcome to The Songwriter’s Workshop. This is the series where I attempt to write songs based on the process and techniques of famous songwriters. Each video looks at a different songwriter’s writing habits, musical inspirations, and creative process while also including an original song written using those techniques.
Canadian singer-songwriter k. d. lang is the subject of this video, and her collaboration with Ben Mink to create her amazing 1992 album Ingenue. I use k. d.'s experience writing the songs in order to write my own song, "Will You Miss Me, Misery?".

Thanks for creating these! Very helpful to hear a breakdown of how people wrote songs. I liked your Phil Collins one the best . For this song I think the tone of the keyboard stuck out too much and it distracted me from the rest of the instruments and voice. It could be just how it was mixed too.

The tuning trick is some thing i used for decades. Works realy well. Also picking up a new intrument, you may not call it plaing, but now we talking aavout writing.

I just began watching your videos today and I can confidently say that I'm going to continue watching every future release as well. Every idea that I've learned for songwriting has been extremely inspiring and useful for my own music. I also absolutely adore the overall feel of these videos, there's a strange comfort to them. Another great demo and video! Really liked the vibe and arrangement regarding the theme you've picked. I'm not sure if you have plenty more to add to it but you sure could keep on polishing the tone. Maybe a quick hang drum solo could be interesting to play around with the slide ones. Something more ethereal in the piano for a bridge, perhaps. Thanks for the content as always, mate!
