@@KirbySonicTeam to be honest, I never really noticed how bare bones a lot of the interactions with many of the Disney characters were. But the moment you brought it up I was like, “Oh damn he’s not wrong” and that, in my opinion, is just really cool about this game and how it uses the characters. While the interactions are limited, the weight and history of them more then carries the lack of it in the game. Also I’ve always believed this game carries a certain magic to it the others in the series lacks and this entire video is basically an explanation to why that is; far better then I could’ve explained.

Interesting take, well done! A lot of ground covered here despite the relatively narrow focus. It's nice to see someone examining a really specific angle of this game's presentation. Despite the fact that I think the Disney worlds are handled very well in KH1, you're not wrong about the writing for the supporting characters being very sparse in that game... Perhaps that's just another indication of how weak the Disney material is in later games. But regardless, the real strength of the Disney stuff in KH1 comes from the atmosphere, the gameplay, and the way the Disney villains are integrated into the plot, as you observe at length. One thing I want to say - and this may seem a bit redundant with the content of the video, so please humor me - is that when you've got the rich atmosphere of the Disney worlds & you spend a lot of time going through unbroken gameplay, the player has a tendency to develop an unconscious connection with the characters they're hanging out with even if no dialogue is being exchanged. The actual writing for supporting characters in KH1 is definitely sparse, but there's a lot of mechanical stuff going on to sell Sora's connection with the characters. In 2002, having the Disney characters verbally say, "Sora!" in gameplay as they tossed you items or healing magic probably had a big impact on how players connected with those characters. At least, a bigger impact than such a design choice might have today. I didn't play the KH games until around the time Days came out so I'd already seen plenty of games outperform KH in terms of AI voice interactions with the player. But whenever I see KH fans clowning on how "Donald never heals you," I think about a conversation I had with a friend of mine back in college. He did play the KH games closer to launch, and his memory didn't linger on Donald failing to heal him. He just remembered the times Donald did heal him, and how neat it was that Donald was acting independently and looking out for him. Kinda similar to your comment about Goofy saying, "Don't give up!" during the Guard Armor fight. I think a LOT of players may feel a similar connection with the other Disney party members. That, combined with a player's familiarity with the source material, would probably do a lot of work to fill in the gaps where the sparse dialogue of KH1 Halloween Town fails to flesh out character dynamics. Anyway, I know you talked about how the gameplay connects you to the characters in your video. It just called those memories and thoughts to mind and I thought I'd share. I didn't really know what else to say because I liked the video, but I know from experience that "I liked it!" isn't always the most fulfilling thing to read in a comment lol.

I actually have a video in the works for KH2 and how it handles Disney and Final Fantasy. But it might shock you to know that I have almost a 2 hours script on my hands on how well that game integrates and handles them. I would absolutely love if you would be willing to read it over. But needless to say I’ve put a lot of time and thought into it. This KH1 video is basically meant to be a prologue to that one.

@@KirbySonicTeam a few things. Recently, I've really been into the mindset of "Objectivity be damned. If this thing gave me joy, then it has value." In this video, specifically, you made sure that your love for the game was clear from beginning to end while doing your due diligence and backing up your points with several moments in the games (with help from the editing). You also constructively criticise the game's story here and there, because there's always room to improve. Other than that...it's just written and spoken well, what can I say🤷🏾‍♂️

Sora knew Hook was working with Maleficent as well, via Riku's presence and Hook himself saying Riku left to "the ruins of Hollow Bastion, where Maleficent resides". Even Jiminy's Journal only mentions Jafar and Hook as working with Maleficent as a result; it's just Hades, Ursula and Oogie Boogie whom Sora and friends never learn are connected to her.
