50 years ago, Led Zeppelin released their self-titled debut. Their sophomore effort followed just a handful of months later -- taking them from nearly unknown session players to a hard rock powerhouse. But when the band shifted from their blues influence towards folk for Led Zeppelin III, a luke-warm response from fans and critics threatened their rise.
Their success was being attributed to hype and aggressive marketing campaigns. In protest, Zeppelin would move away from the standard -- if not necessary way of selling records. Their fourth album would be left untitled and the band’s name, absent from the cover. Instead, mysterious sigils appeared -- one for each member of the group. They would strip everything away in order to let the music speak for itself.
They would have to push their creative limits in order to progress -- experimenting with new production techniques and instruments. Guitarist Jimmy Page swore their fourth album would be their best. If it wasn’t, they’d give up and retire. What followed was one of the most iconic rock albums ever made. Setting Led Zeppelin on a path towards becoming legends of rock and roll.
-------------------------------
Led Zeppelin FAQ
Where was Led Zeppelin 4 recorded? Where was Led Zeppelin IV recorded?
Led Zeppelin's fourth album was recorded at Headley Grange in Hampshire, England.
When did Led Zeppelin 4 come out? What year did Led Zeppelin IV released?
November 8, 1971
What do the Led Zeppelin 4 symbols mean?
The feather of Ma’at, Egyptian goddess of justice and fairness encompassed within a circle. The emblem of a writer, belonged to none other than Robert Plant. The Borromean rings, depicting man, woman and child resided with John Bonham. A celtic knot portrayed a person both confident and competent was chosen by John Paul Jones. Finally, Zoso. Designed by Page himself, it wasn’t intended to be a word at all. It’s meaning remains a complete mystery.
Why was Led Zeppelin IV called zoso?
The band's name and title were left off the album. The only things left were the symbols the group created. Page's Zoso was the only one that appeared to form a word and it just stuck.
How many copies of Led Zeppelin 4 have been sold?
Led Zeppelin IV has sold over 23 millions copies in North America. With 37 million copies sold worldwide.
Is Led Zeppelin IV the best album ever?
That's for you to decide. It's arguably the group's best record.

Yeah, I like 3 a lot. Probably more than I like 1 and 2--though 2 is a more powerful album. Yeah, they went a little deep in the folk tunes--but you can't really knock an album that birthed Immigrant Song and Since I've Been Loving You. And I like that they showed they didn't have to rely on volume and overdrive...

3's the best of the numbered albums imo (though Houses of the Holy is my favorite overall)
@NowhereMan7

@@Ethan_Brant Why not Physical Graffiti? To me its just an easy #1. Its not often that double albums wouldnt benefit with a little trimming down (Beatles White album for example). PG doesnt have a weak link and it has such a sprawling array of styles and of course more songs than any other album. Its their high water mark creatively in my opinion too. If I could only ever listen to one ever again it would be PG. Hard to pick number #2 though. Either III, IV or HoTH.

The 1st time I heard Led Zeppelin was in 1969. We had a convenience store in the neighborhood and I believe I was only around 12 years old. They had a wire basket there that was full of 45 rpm records with holes melted through them. I'll never forget it living loving maid was on one side and whole lotta love on the other. They hit my generation of kids like a steamroller. I was already experimenting with the guitar. And what an influence they were. I still play guitar today and I'm 62. Thanks to all the members of Led Zeppelin for doing what they did. I also listen to them to this day. And will till the day I die.

I remember when LZ4 was first released. I was a senior in high school and already a huge Zep fan. Stairway and Misty Mountain blew me away, but it did not take long before the entire album got played over and over and over and over on 8-track tape. Too difficult to pick just one favorite from LZ4 or the entire catalog. Four is definitely the overall favorite album.

A decent job reporting on Led Zeppelin IV, Middle 8. Very enjoyable. However, it's common knowledge that the Gibson Twin Neck was purchased after the album's production, to perform Stairway to Heaven, live, with just the one guitar. It has been reported by Page, himself, the 12 String electric guitar parts were performed on a Fender XII.

I maybe overthought this but i really wanted to say it out loud. In my junior year of highschool i got to make a essay about led zeppelin and when i listened to the fourth album again after listning to the three first a idea came to me. My theory is that the B side of the album is the true fourth album and the first three songs on the album was just the build up to "stairway to heaven", the album true opening track. Basically my idea was that "black dog", "rock n roll" and "the battle of evermore" represents the first 3 three album by two reasons. 1. They all would fit perfectly on the other albums. Black dog for the first album and so on. 2. They basically go through chronologicly all of the bands different sounds over the years til they reach the fourth song "stairway to heaven" representing the fourth album and how it as the video says blend all the different sounds into one song. I may have overthinked it but it just makes the album better in my opinion.

Image of Fleetwood Mac at 1:47 displays the wrong band, in 1970 the band didn't have Stevie and Lindsey and perhap the original guitar trio still consisted of Green, Kirwan and Spancer (none of them on the photo). Please do a video on early Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green, the most criminally screwed-up band of rock history. A lot of people know the story of later Fleetwood Mac and their dirty laundry, soap opera crap, but the years when the real music happened remain more or less obscure.

Whenever someone comes across one of the rock mags with the top 500 albums of all time we end up arguing about what the top 5 or 10 albums should be. My personal rule is that these top albums should NOT have one weak track- they should be great from start to finish. That being said, my top 6 albums are: 6) Bruce S- Born To Run. 5) Fleetwood Mac- Rumours. 4) The Beatles- Abbey Road. 3) The Who- Who's Next. 2) Led Zep- IV. 1) Pink Floyd- The Dark Side Of The Moon.

This was my introduction to Led Zeppelin I was 9 years old when this album came out, I by way of a neighbor heard this and my life changed forever, I stared later at my brothers copy like looking upon a powerful book of occult knowledge, this was no ordinary music album or band, it had no writing, it had no pictures of the musicians, it didn't tell you what it was, the cover didn't seem to make sense, it seemed cold and mysterious, the picture of the old man with the sticks on his back hanging on a broken building, then you opened it and saw the night scene of the hermit on the mountain top holding his lantern looking down the mountain side as someone appears to be attempting to journey to the top, the album sleeve had calligraphy on it telling a story about a lady buying a stairway to heaven. You pulled the album out and there these 4 symbols over the words Led Zeppelin. The music on it was unlike anything I'd known before it. From the haunting echoes of Black Dog to the thundering Levee breaking, it went to California, the Owls cried in the night, the queen of light to her bow and turned to gold, they packed their bags for the Misty Mountain where the spirits go, a lady bought a Stairway To Heaven and the sounds that accompanied those stories was captivating and powerful in a way I'd not yet heard and would never forget. It was like a new religion or something, there was something powerful and mysterious about this Led Zeppelin, it shook me, it moved my soul and captured my imagination with the coolest heavy music, my attraction to the guitar and the powers they possess really took on a whole new meaning. This album had quite an impact on my musical self and was to me truly "The Thunder Of The Gods"

Fact: There's no such word as "zoso". Jimmy Page's sygil is the word "sol" written backwards and forwards. "Sol" Latin for the word Sun. This represents Page's interest in Crowley's belief that practioners of his style of "magick" should posess the ability to do almost anything both forwards and backwards; everything to include walking, speaking, writing,etc. Thus,the "Sol" sygil.
@someguy5035

Zoso wasnt designed by page himself. he took it right out of a book like the others did. It means saturn, the planet of his sun birth sign capricorn (from a comment above) "Zoso," inadvertently describes the genius Page's actual ability, from this album forward, to reproduce many key elements of his studio arrangements on the concert stage. Until he toured with the Black Crowes, who had a keyboard player and two guitarists, in addition to himself, Page on stage was often "so so." (from comment below) Zoso/Zozo is a "demon". Since Page was obsessed with Crowleyism and the occult its not a surprising choice (another comment below) I’m pretty sure it’s Page’s interpretation of one of Saturn’s astronomical symbols. I’d assume he chose to look at symbols for the planet of Saturn due to the subject of Page’s star sign, Capricorn, being directly influenced by the Roman god Saturn. There’s a website dedicated to finding the meaning behind the ‘Zoso’ symbol, which contains digitised works that contain information Page may have referenced when it came to designing his symbol for Led Zeppelin IV (another comment below) In other words, people are just making shit up and I don't believe any of you.
