You asked for comments about individual experiences. I am 70 and on a Sunday morning exactly 9 weeks ago, fell on a low step and fractured my humerus and dislocated my shoulder - luckily the right one, as I am left handed! After 4 weeks in a sling and on meds, the hospital physiotherapist advised me to wean off both, which I did. X-rays showed there was new bone growth exactly where it should be. The bruising was a lovely shade of dark navy all over the upper arm for four or so weeks, then when it faded to green, dreadful dark fingerprint bruises appeared, no doubt where the surgeon had manipulated the arm back into position. That could not have been easy as it was a (I think this is the correct word) protuberant dislocation, which means the broken part remained in the socket and the rest of the arm dislocated to the other (exterior) side of the broken part. I would say it was week 7 before the pain decreased, and the thing hardest to cope with was fatigue, caused by broken sleep - never got more than 2 hours without waking up and having to change position, which meant I never got that deep sleep that is so important for us all - until last night, when finally I managed two 4-hour sleeps! Bliss. Pleased to report I was driving in just under 8 weeks, so able to enjoy my new Automatic Self Charging car, which had been delivered just two days earlier. The pain now is just a full ache, like general stiffness and only hurts when I have overdone things or try too hard with the exercises. However. I am on the mend! The Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon who re-located my shoulder on Day 1 did tell me 12-16 weeks is not unusual for an injury like mine and probably nearer 6 months for reasonably full recovery. The physiotherapist says up to a year is not unusual and has warned that I may never reach 100% of actions as before, but she does expect me to reach at least almost full mobility. I hope this commentary helps others. One thing that I believe is crucial is to get at least a couple of hours rest each day, because the fatigue is draining and the afternoon rest definitely helps. A positive attitude helps too, which fortunately I have!

Advice.. . really focus on the rehabilitation drills. You have to really strengthen the whole shoulder like never before to make it difficult to pop out again. Don't waist time waiting for recovery. Strengthen that shoulder as soon as possible. Make it over strong. Focus on rehab like your life depended on it. Best advice

Okay, this is my only question. How soon can you start working the shoulder with exercise? Can you start immediately for will that actually hamper healing? Does the shoulder need to remain stationary in a sling to actually heal better? Or is that only a pain relief thing? Because I don't care about the pain as much as I care about getting strength back.
@NonLegitNation22 жыл бұрын
I dislocated my shoulder about 15 yrs ago, my shoulder was hanging about 4 inches out of my shoulder socket. I went to the ER they knocked me out and popped it back in and gave me a sling and sent me home. Over the next 2 yrs just doing normal things like making my bed my shoulder would dislocate. Eventually it stopped happening, but unfortunately earlier today i was on my bike and crashed and dislocated the same shoulder, but it popped right back in. Thankfully I'm off work tomorrow and i think I'm going to take off the next day to give it time to heal a bit.

I dislocated my shoulder just a few days ago reaching my arm behind me and to the front. It was excruciating pain. It popped back in on its own. I was able to see an orthopedic PA right of way two days later. I'm not wearing a sling. Still have severe pain, not helped by Tylenol or Advil. I think the most frustrating part is knowing you have to rest it and not being properly examined to know if you need surgery or not.

I dislocated my left shoulder about 20 years ago when I slipped on ice.It’s been popping out for 20 years! The only thing that helps to reduce repeated dislocations is exercise and being fit - I once gone full 2 years without dislocating it once, but then I got lazy and it started again. So, in my case, it’s exercise that reduce these horrible dislocations.

Wanted to avoid tripping on a cable but ended up tripping, tried to support my heavy self putting my arm against the wall while falling and boom, shoulder dislocated. Thoughts on pain are interesting, mainly because seeing a part of one's body flail or out of its usual place, generally produces panic, and this panic makes the pain much more intense. When the doctor finally put the shoulder back in place, the pain was almost the same (decreasing), but the calmness brought by at least having my shoulder back in its place again was extremely soothing. Overall, a great learning experience and shoulder is where it should be :) (Also, a great opportunity to be grateful about so many things we take for granted, like hospitals, doctors, people that helped me go through it, and the fact we can learn scientifically advanced concepts at the tip of our fingers) EDIT: I also passed out around 2 times. So, yes, pain is damn intense like Peter says.

This is the second time I've re-injured my shoulder post-surgery. I did the same thing surfing last year and I swam half a mile with my arm out of socket in really big surf. What you're feeling is the muscles healing . when you dislocate your shoulder your muscle stretches trying to support the weight of the bone. They say it takes 1 year for your shoulder to completely heal, I absolutely believe what they say.

@@christopherboydandmartinsc9322 Hello, I'm fine now and have since recovered completely, no chronic issues. Fortunately, I did not require surgery. I was extremely worried about needing keyhole surgery to fix lingering instability/pain I felt for a few months after, but the healing process saw to that. It just takes time, in my case 9 months before my shoulder was strong and ready again. I was 30 years old at the time when it happened, which a physician said may have helped. Told me cartilage around the socket gets more malleable or something as you get old and not as prone to chronic shoulder instability/dislocation like in young adults. I take you may have dislocated your shoulder too? I hope you are doing okay friend, I know it sucks.

I'm 32 but not going to do surgery because from what I've gathered from my elders is even after surgery It's likely to have issues. I'm looking into the prp treatment. My best advice for anyone is stay stabilizing your shoulder. I dislocated my shoulder twice in one day. After I healed up I set out to build up my shoulders chest and back as strong as possible. I slacked off for about 18 months now I'm back on KZbin looking up videos about this. I'm going to get my upper body back right and go for this prp treatment. I blame myself but God's will this will never happen again.

Hello Dr. D. Geier, It was a freak accident in E. Berlin in a Air BnB apartment which had (mysteriously) super-sleek tiles and super super sleek two feet deep bathtub. Even with rubberized shoes, you could slip in an instant if not careful to ground your feet. As I came out of shower with my left foot outside the tub, I lifted my right foot from the inside the tub and in a split second, my left foot went under and my body flung over to the left, slamming onto the tiles and left hand outstretched, landing on it, my left shoulder dislocated and I screamed with the worst pain of my life, tipped over 360 inadvertently from pain and crawled to the door handle to open the door to alert my family what has just happened. I was in the severest form of pain and my pain tolerance is very high. I have never taken analgesics of narcotic level in my life. I would rather suffer than block the symptom. First day in Germany and in a strange place, it took 45 minutes for the ambulance to arrive, and then 30 min ride to hospital. during all this time, I walked from the room to downstairs and to the ambulance as I clutched my left arm tucked tight against my left flank and belly, right hand holding it tightly along and the first set of x-rays that came out showed that the humeral head had already settled back in the socket and the LT shoulder did not look DISLOCATED. My grits and experience dealing with dislocations came handy. They put me in a sling, which has been 5 days so far.I have started hydro-therapy in jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. The clotted blood has started oozing out from the deep space and out to the skin along the biceps and little along triceps as well as axillary wall. I guess this is the normal process. My shoulder does not feel unstable but any abduction beyond 15-20 degrees causes pain. Had MRI and waiting for the results. I am sure there are soft tissue damages. My questions to you are... (1) In jacuzzi, I have been able to release my shoulder to almost 90 degree abduction w/o much pain. Should I continue doing this? I basically tested out my limits, as I do after any injury and subsequent immobilization. Doing this outside jacuzzi, causes intense pain. (2) Soon after I returned from my first session, I noticed a slight reddish purple hue along my biceps and after the night, more had creeped under the skin. Does this hematomous blood eventually get absorbed into the circulation? Is there any specific astringent or ointment suggested to expedite this? (3) Today being sixth day, I have tried to remain outside the sling more and more. Is this OK? As I have stated earlier, I do not have any instability. I will appreciate your feedback.

I dislocated my left shoulder yesterday for the 6th time since 2005. I'm 36 years old. I woke up and I was stretching my arms and my left shoulder popped out. I went to the ER like usual but by the time I got there the pain was so bad because it has already been 3 hours by the time they tried to put it back in. Usually they try by giving me some pain medication and something to relax me. That didn't work as usual so they put me under a twilight sleep but my shoulder was still resisting. So I had to wait another 4 or 5 hours until an orthopedic doctor got there and I was taken to the OR and put under general anesthesia. The doctor said once i was asleep it went in very easily. I have an appointment to meet with him in 2 weeks to discuss my recovery and future surgery to repair my shoulder so it doesn't come out doing routine activities. In the summer of 2016 was the last time I dislocated my shoulder and I had an MRI done. The MRI showed either a hill Sachs lesion or the berkhart lesion, I can't remember which one. I didn't get surgery last time because I'm not active in playing sports like I was when I was younger. However it's starting to pop out doing routine everyday day activities. Also the pain of dislocsting my shoulder is very severe and i do not want to go through that pain again. It's really painful after about an hour of it being out of socket. Do you think it's a good decision to have the surgery to fix my recurrent shoulder dislocations?

Hi. How's your shoulder now? Do you play sports? I ' Ve Just had the same experience as yours. Fell down the stairs😢
@bigslimbaby6 ай бұрын
@@lovelyoungman Hey, ironically I ended up dislocating the same shoulder again last summer, and decided to get labrum repair surgery. The surgery is quick, but recovery is rough cause you’re super stiff and limited in motion. PT will help you tremendously though. Im currently 9 months post op, I feel really good, some soreness at times but it’s normal. I’ve been able to start lifting weights again, swing a golf club at the range and throw as well. I haven’t played any contact sports yet but I’ve got my final check up in August and the surgeon has told me that I should be able to return to any activity with no worries afterwards. I’ve had a few falls on ice throughout the recovery but I felt fine after. The process is definitely long and you get most of your range of motion back afterwards. Overall I feel great!
@bigslimbaby6 ай бұрын
However I will say, before I got hurt again and went for surgery I was definitely fine. I was lifting heavy, and didn’t seem to feel any pain. Just at times felt a bit of stress on my shoulder if I was benching heavy. Unless you’re doing heavy activity I feel like you should be okay as long as you rehab and strengthen your shoulder. But I’ve heard of cases where people will dislocate again from simply drying themselves with a towel. It’s all about how you feel but I’d recommend rehabbing for sure and strengthening yourself if you’re worried about it and don’t wanna opt for surgery.

I turned 46 on Saturday, and on my way out to a party, I rolled my ankle and put my shoulder through a railing which pulled the shoulder out one way, then as I fell and my arm was still through the railing, it yanked the shoulder in the other direction. The pain was unreal. It is 4 days later, and I have no feeling in my shoulder, and I can only move my arm from the elbow down. Upper arm, I can't move orlys lift my - it is like it is paralysed. It is 4 weeks until my physio appointment. I'm on painkillers which do work, but i feel groggy.

@wildwayz2 ай бұрын
@@bigneiltoohi yes it was dislocated and the hospital popped it back in. However, they missed on 3 occasions that I had broken it too (the radiologist reported it broken when verifying the xray 2 days later but no one notified me) - 4 weeks later, I went to physio where I was told I had broken it. 6 weeks in total since I did it, they operated to re-attach the two pieces of my humerus together using anchors. I couldn’t move my arm because the rotator cuff muscle / tendons was attached to the broken part. I’m 2 days out of surgery and in pain - but the most uncomfortable feeling, is that it feels like someone is pulling my arm down as the tendons shrunk and had to be stretched again

Hi, My dislocation was a posterior dislocation. I have a very serious question? If you dislocated your shoulder & never got it put back in. How long would it take you to get a full range of movement back? & how painful would it be in that time? I have a torn front & back of labrum & a cyst in the joint. It requires surgery (2 operations) one for stability & another for a ligament in the front of the shoulder. I do not want specific medical advice, just your opinion on the range of movement & time frame to get full range of movement if it was never relocated.

I usually go or hostilic therapy specifically needling, that brings back the full range of motion for a good while 2-3 months i’d say then it stiffens up again so i have to do needling again and again but other than that it’s perfectly fine with no dislocations ever since

I already dislocated my left shoulder 5 years back and it pops out around 10times after that and was a real confidence killer , but after that I realized the importance of proper warmup right before practice. I use some muscle spary so that muslces get warmedup faster and a wear good shoulder brace too , after doing these I can forget about the injury and get my confidence back 💯 . I didn't do any surgery all I did was doing small intesity shoulder movements and later build some muslce building exercises. Now my right one is gone too , let continue the same process a see how it goes ✌️

I dislocated my left shoulder on a skateboard ramp two days ago. First time it ever happened and I popped it straight back in. I'm using a sling and just trying not to do too much with it. I'm not in great amounts of pain, but I have smaller range of motion, mainly lifting my arm above my head is difficult. Does this sound similar to your experience? I mainly feel pain down my arm, not necessarily right in the shoulder so assume this is more muscle/nerve/ligament damage as a result.
@sojinstunts4 жыл бұрын
@@SilentJaz yeah once it's get dislocated overhead positions are less stable so don't go overhead without control and against the pain , use low tension resistance band to strengthen your shoulders . , proper rest time is important at least 3months doing just physiotherapy . Ten days ago I was hiking up a hill and dislocated my left shoulder for the first time. Fortunately there were a few people around to call for help. As I was in a relatively remote area, I finally got to the hospital within a couple hours. Ex rays were taken and I was given pain medicine. The doctor lifted my arm and reset the shoulder in a few minutes. He took ex-rays again and said it looks good. He gave me a prescription of pain medicine and said to wear a sling for two weeks which I've been doing. After ten days there is still a dull pain. I continue to keep my arm stabilized in a sling most of the time. One question...When I compare my two shoulders, my left injured shoulder/arm seems to hang down a little straighter than my right arm and the right shoulder appears rounder. I guess I'm a bit concerned if it was set properly. Any feedback would be appreciated. Best.

Dislocated my shoulder while bicycling. The pain was intense but once they popped it back in it felt worlds better. My only question is how long until I can start exercising again? Because I want to start immediately even though it hasn't even been a week. But the doctors make it sound like you must do nothing at all. Will moving the arm prevent proper healing? Or will moving the arm help healing? It's frustrating that doctors won't give all the information and instead treat the patient like we are children.
