@@jsjs6751 considering that “idling” in an EV means that everything is off except HVAC, 20% can last a while, especially with a heat pump. And what car has a 24 kWh battery? A 2011 Leaf??? The smallest Tesla battery is the 60kwh LFP.

@@jsjs6751 in that case it’s the same as a petrol car, you can runout in any kind of vehicle. The advantage of the ev is that it’s more efficient at idling so it’s going to last longer, and also, if you are stuck in a big queue, at least you are not poisoning anyone with the exhaust fumes 😷😄👍

Hey! Great video. I think snow can help in this situation, because it's a very good insulating material. 15 years ago, I got stranded, with a friend, a night on a highway in winter austria. We had to spend the night in the car. There was a 5cm layer of snow all over the car. We slept very well in our sleeping bags, and we were amazed that we didn't need to start the car once. It was quite comfy in the car, around 15-13 degre all night. I'd say your test is a pessimistic estimate (which is a good thing), because, in case you are stranded, you can live with 15 degre interior. Energy consumption will be way less.

You're forgetting that the snow melted on the windscreen and that this process eats up more energy.

@@bjornnyland I know, because "high" temperature were maintained inside. During our real life experience, snow didn't melt, and it was comfy, with our coat on. It was around 13-15 degree inside the car. And around 0 or less outside. Our bodies were enough to keep the temp stable
@jsjs6751
@jsjs6751 Жыл бұрын
If outside temperature is (way) below the melting point, and the temperature inside is low enough for the snow not melting, then I think you will conserve energy with snow on the car. If it's windy, you will probably save even more, since the emitted heat will not be as easily transported away from the car..

EV’s are indeed great at keeping you warm, but in an emergency case when you don’t how long it will take to overcome a risky situation, I would lower the temperature to maybe 10 degrees Celcius and put on the wintercoat. This way you could probably survive maaany more hours. In an ICE you can’t do that, it’s either on or off.

Fossil cars also have the disadvantage that they cannot really regulate the heat output from the engine. Depending on the temperature, an unnecessarily large amount of fuel is burned and the heat is given off outside via the cooler

Don't forget the heatpump effect while comparing to ICE. It does only draw 1 kW "mechanical" energy from the battery to run the compressor. That then pulls outside "heat" and pumps it to a higher temperature level for cabin usage. Summed to heating power of 3 kW

great test. but i always wanted to see, like others here already mentioned, how it will look in more real bad conditions. i mean if it looks worse and you may think, you will be locked to the car for more than 4 days, being somewhere remote. ok, its a point to discuss, how real this scenario is, but lets take (if its winter again) a lower temperature, like minus 5 degrees c and a full battery, what is of course warm (i like that in the test). its like you just came from a long lunch break at a charger and go full into the winterlockdown bc of snow and whatnot. now you don't heat up to 21 degrees, but just to lets say 16 or 18 degrees, or less, but use the seat heating also! with having jacket on it is comfortable and save enough. also, so that you dont have to sit in the car for that epic and endless test, maybe use an infrared panel (relatively cheap and adjustable in power) and put it onto the drivers seat with setting to about 90 to 100 watts (about the power a human body gives). the more people would be inside, the longer it lasts, but go with one person for reference. on the daytime simulate, that it is still cloudy and cover the windshields, so that the sun cant warm up the cabin so much. or maybe it is cloudy in the test. i really would like to see the outcome. unfortunately i dont have such a plaid, or a 100kwh car. i once tried that with my ioniq classic and had to leave for a trip after 6 hours. if i remember correct, i lost just 10%, without the infrared panel. i guess, even in an ioniq with fully loaded 28kwh hour battery, you will reach 50 hours and more, if you dont go to 21 degrees. i had it ob 18. i know this is a loooong and maybe boring test, but its about surviving a hardcore situation and giving people more confidence. if being trapped in such a situation, i may start with 20 degrees, but after a while inwill go into save mode. also you may not have 100% left. but with such a test, you roughly can estimate what 10% give you in your car. i may do that next winter with the ioniq and limit the % use to 20%. but i will put in the infrared panel. ok, thats it, sorry for long and maybe confusing text. always appreciate your videos and tests. since years. greetings from germany, where the autobahn lives. 😊 ps. people do hours long fun walks in minus 10 degrees winter days for fun and dont die. so why not be in 10 or 15 degree environment with seat heating and clothes 😊

Heat pump will heat the car and cool the garage. As it transfers heat (energy) from car's outside air (in this case garage air) to inside of the car. Depending on the garage size, ventilation/heating etc I don't think that's an issue, but there's a reason why you want to install heat pump outside in free air, so that it can extract as much heat from the air.

If parked in a perfectly insulated space, there would not be any heat (or cold, SIC) added or subtracted to the system The inside temp could be limited, depending on the initial temp inside and outside the car, the volume of air inside and outside, and the efficiency of the heat pump. Over time, the energy spent from the battery to move heat from outside to inside will increase the overall temperature.

From my experience in Winter with fossil the coolant temperature will drop if you just idle. As there is no load on the engine and during idle it does not produce enought waste heat to keep the coolant warm. Just like people let there engine run in order to unfreeze it (which does not really work) So with modern fossil cars a resistence heater could kick in to heat the coolant I guess inside the short cooling loop.

@mesaber86

Dry, fluffy snow is a good insulator because it contains a lot of air that slows down heat loss. Wetter, denser, hard-packed snow provides less insulation, because it contains less air among the snow crystals. It's funny how the main percentage of the fuel in fossil cars actually generates heat, 65-80%, and yet they still will not manage to keep you warm for longer. It gets worse when you know, that one kilogram of gasoline/diesel contains ~~12,7 kWh of energy. Then driving on LPG makes even more sense with 13,7 kWh... LOL

I would turn on the seat heaters, pull out the minimum of 5 blankets I always have in the car, and turn car off between needed heating cycles. I could probably survive for weeks on a 100 kWh fully charged battery. Note: It would never be at 100% SoC, would it? Tip: Never go on a car trip in winter without the same warm clothing you would use if going for a hike outside. In winter driving, set temp to about 16-17 degrees... just enough to not getting too cold, and car still being able to keep the windshield clear. In summer, set temp to something like 24 degrees, just enough to keep you alert in traffic. Setting to like 19-20 degrees can make you catch a cold, and when exiting the car you will be overwhelmed by for example 30 degrees outside temperature.

Like he said, in reality the warmth will keep longer with the addition of some heat generating meat bags (humans) inside. Also you can stretch it out in an emergency with some simple hacks, like keeping the temperature down and using the heated seats. Also putting up a mylar blanket (from a first aid kit) over the windows. Seems like keeping the battery warm would be a big benefit, I’d consider piling snow around the base of the vehicle.

@AleksanderHoff
@AleksanderHoff Жыл бұрын
Ice cars in idle mode uses around 0,6 liters / hour per liter of engine displacement, meaning a 2 liter engine uses 1,2 liters. An average American car with 3 liters or more uses closer to 2 liters per hour. ICE cars normally have somewhere between 50 and 90 liters of gas available at max (some exceptions of course). Meaning if it uses 1,2 liters per hour it can go between 41,6 hours or up to 75 hours. If it is a bigger engine, let’s say a V8 3,5 liters it would just keep going between 25 and 45 hours.
