Interesting test, I expected the consumption to increase, but not THIS much. Probably no more Sweden route 1000km in the coming months due to the disaster at Stenungsund this night. I hope everybody is OK there and no more related accidents will happen.

This is really interesting, and it confirms that having an aerodynamic car is no real advantage when pulling a huge brick behind you. (I honestly knew this having towed with 3 CR-Vs a V70 and a Civic ) This summer we hooked our caravan to my Polestar 2 (DLRM, 476hp which I've owned for exactly one year today) and over 13 days and 2676 km's we actually averaged 354Wh pr KM (average speed was 61km/h though). This was on mostly mid and northern Norwegian roads, lots of mountains, and not at all perfect conditions, but there were a lot of roads where we couldn't drive as fast as 80km/h which probably worked to our advantage on the consumption.

I think the tests with trailers are very interesting. I own an ID4 today which I am very happy with but this spring we will be changing to a car with a higher towing weight. the choice is between Tesla Y LR, Volvo C40 and BMW I4 M50. It would be interesting with a test of C40 in particular. Then the car does not consume more with a boogie trailer than one with only two wheels. Thanks for the great tests.

You can consider trailer challenges to 500km, it's easy to extrapolate to the full 1000km challenge and also is a reasonable distance for hauling trailers. Most people don't wants to drive 14h straight, and it's also less tiresome for you as well (stay healthy).

You can't extrapolate from 500km as the first leg is always 100% charge. The real test is when you get into the charge-drive-charge-drive cycle later on to see what kind of a journey you can expect.

Bjorn I believe you that this trailer consume the same amount of energy as a camper trailer. But can you check it? With a camper trailer with 2 axles, the reason is that weight is 2 times more and it could have effect because trailer brakes will be trigger more.

Our trailer test was super easy and the F-250 lightning failed. Going from basically Portland, Oregon to Spokane, Washington it took way longer that expected. My wife did the trip, but it was super painful. I suspect and Model Y would have done better given our particular charger and efficiency situation.

kWh used & 1,000km - I was looking for the kWh used by the BYD Han and played the video again. "The car does not properly report it" Bjørn said, paraphrased. That's true but there's a snake in the grass. Any car only reports what it takes out of the battery. That neither reports losses in battery kWh from temperature changes, nor charging losses. I would argue that the best way to measure ~1,000 km kWh consumption is to start at 100% charge and then add up all charges taking from charging stations needed to make the trip and get back to 100% again (or, say, 90% if you want to, in both cases). After all, this is what you pay for. Another thing is how much we pay for a kWh. In my country fuel taxes are high but as there are 10 kWh in a litre of petrol (gasoline) or 11 kWh in Diesel fuel, the price per kWh at the fuel station is about €0.25. Well, the per kWh price at charging stations is often a lot higher than that. Assuming about 12% losses between what you put into the battery and the car reports to take out, assuming €0.25 per kWh, you end up at about €50 per 1,000km with the cheapest kWh consuming e-car or €110 for the highest kWh consuming (between the ones of which I put Bjørn's data into my spreadsheet). For reference, an economic middle middle class ICE sedan with economic Diesel engine would roughly cost you about €140 for the 1,000 km (in fuel only, ignoring higher per km maintenance costs). But, pay €0.70 per kWh at the very fast charging station along the motorway and your costs go up to 2.8 times and €50 becomes €140. (€1.00 = NOK 11.29 say Google today - or over the last 365 days between NOK 10.20 and NOK 12.00). Anyhow, Bjørn, I love your videos.

This test is really interesting. Our Q4 does definitely notice when we're pulling the trailer, but since the most common trailer we pull is smaller than the rear end of the Q4, it's not being completely destroyed on range. Really drives in the part that drag is the biggest factor for EV's in the smaller trailer sizes. Noticed this as well. Pretty close on consumption regardless if the trailer is fully laden or mostly empty, but range is really getting hit when pulling the big fullsize box.

The weight would make a big difference if you're climbing a hill.
@Tyriama
@Tyriama Жыл бұрын
@@ralanham76 Yea, for sure. We're mostly moving light but bulky stuff to and from our cabin, where the average incline is very low due to following a natural valley for most of the 250-260km. it's only the last 35km that have any major incline from around 180MSL to 920 MSL. Definitely noticeable in the winter, but not as much as when we had to pull a similar trailer to what TB pulled here, that really hurt the range.

Thanks for all your intresting tests, but your trailer is not comparable to a caravan according to my experience. I drive trailer frequently and have similar numbers as this test with similar trailer. But when i hook my caravan 1600kg i average between 385 - 400 Wh/km And then i dont do 90 but rather 80km/h. i drive a MYLR from 21. Its still a fantastic car to pull trailer with. But consumption is high. Driving long distances will take much time at chargingstations.

The problem is that your car and trailer must sit within a Gross Combined Mass figure, if you're also towing a battery that means less trailer load capacity.
@Nelson-Man
@Nelson-Man Жыл бұрын
Weight is a big issue with caravans. They are already often overloaded. A small ICE engine would make more sense. As you don't pull a caravan 1000 km every week it could run on cooking oil or ethanol. However, I suppose many people in the EV bubble would see that as some kind of defeat.

Getting your trailer and vehicle to share a power supply like that is also going to require more hardware on the towing vehicle so that will be a feature that can only be added to future vehicles.
@990Hyper

@@TheEvilmooseofdoomthey will not share the power supply , the caravan will have his own battery and own motors , that substantially will " push " the car instead of being pulled by the car itself . There is already a prototype of a big trailer in the USA, in Munro Channel is available the preview

A Tesla model X on 22" rims and a similar trailer (standing around 6ft high inside) used 400 wh/km this summer while a trailer of 4.5 to 5ft height inside gave 300 Wh/km, compared to the normal 200 Wh/km in speeds of 80kph/50mph. Climbing up a 1000m mountain to 3000ft gave +100 Wh/km at the top. Going down, max 60% of the energy spent can be regenerated.
