Flexibility - Is it Supposed to Take This Long?!
Is gaining flexibility really supposed to take so long?
The short answer- Yes.
Here are some things to think about if you’re getting frustrated with your own flexibility.
1- Be Patient
The body takes some persuasion. Getting the muscles and connecting tissues to get used to new activity takes time. Gaining flexibility is a slow process that demands a lot of commitment and tons of consistency. It’s not going to happen overnight. So, if you’re just starting a stretching routine, don’t expect to slide down into the splits after 5 minutes of light stretching.
On average, it’s recommended that we stretch 10-20 minutes every day (or every other day if you’re just starting). Each stretch needs to be held for roughly 20 seconds, so you can see how stretching both sides of the body equally racks up those minutes faster than you might expect. Add up the days, weeks, months- you’re going to see a massive improvement in hindsight. So, even though your progress may feel as slow as molasses in January, you are making progress every day. Be patient- it takes as long as it takes.
2- Accept Limitations
Many factors contribute to how flexible you are now, how flexible you have the potential to become, and (thanks to our specific anatomical limits) how flexible you may never get. There are some things we can control and improve upon, some things we can’t. At some point, we all have to make peace with that and embrace it. If you accept your anatomical limits, you’ll save yourself from injury. Simple as that.
We can’t control or change the shape of the head of the femur in the hip socket. But, we can work and stretch the muscles and connective tissues surrounding this area. So, stop beating yourself up over things like turnout and whether or not your middle splits are as flat as a pancake. We can’t change the shape of our skeletal structure. But, we can accept what our anatomical limitations are, and learn to work around the issue.
3- Be Consistent
Just like with any other training or physical activity, consistency is key to seeing results. You must be consistent. Each time you work on flexibility, remember that every little bit counts. Be consistent and work with intention. Don’t reach down and touch your toes, pop up and say, “Ok, I’m good. That’s enough.” No ma’am (or sir). Hold each stretch for as long as it requires. Do something every day. Get in the habit of making your stretching routine part of your day. Consistency and persistence always pays off in the end.
4- Practice Safely
Let’s say, your hamstrings are feeling tight and sore. So, you’ve selected a routine that focuses on the legs and hips. As you move through the exercises, the nerve receptors in your legs send specific signals to your brain when they’re fired. That signal gives us the “uncomfortable” feeling we all get when stretching. Sometimes we feel a tingling sensation as the nerves signal the brain, carrying messages to and from your hamstrings as you stretch. In response, the body declares, “I don’t really like this, but I know I’m not in any crucial danger.”
Those signals are how we know what are limitations are at that moment, they tell us to stop pushing at a certain point so we don’t get injured. The body is constantly protecting us from ourselves. It doesn’t want to get hurt, it signals us with feelings of discomfort or pain in an attempt to keep us safe. So, listen to it!
When working your way into a stretch always breathe into it, get plenty of oxygen circulating through the body to help out those muscles.
Feeling discomfort is normal, but feeling pain is NOT. Do not ever push to the point of pain!
All we’re looking for is that point of mild discomfort- never pain. Listen to your body and don’t push too hard too fast.
5- Be Proud of Your Progress
Always remember, Progress is Progress, No Matter How Slow. It may feel slow going at first, but with each minute you put into it, you get one step closer to your goal. It takes as long as it takes. So, acknowledge each milestone. Be proud of every step forward. It will help you stay motivated with a positive outlook.
Are you frustrated about your flexibility? Let me know in the comments :)

I hate those vids on here that broadcast " get ur splits in one day" or insert penche and even oversplits. Thats just simply not feasible for most ppl its false advertising and click bait and most of all someone could get really hurt trying and pushing their body way past its limits. Ive been working on splits for almost a yr. Im close but i still dont have them yet and i accept that. I just appreciate my improvent. I practice at it at least 5 days a week 20-30 min each time. Unfortunately this is the age of instant gratification

The weirdest things about getting my splits was that I could do a leg hold before being able to do a split I mean looking back it wasn’t that good but... also I got my splits in three months even though I would stretch for like a minute and I didn’t stretch very often and I started to do them more often and corrected myself on what I was doing wrong and now I can do it on command with or without stretching. I’ve been doing them for about a year now I’m not on the side anymore and I’m all the way down, I’m also way straighter and I have a better leg hold and more knowledge about dance and now I’m trying to get my middle splits and my left leg splits so believe in yourself, even if that sound really cheesy.

Hey Kayla im a rythmic gymnast and i have a suggestion so that u can get your splits fast . Apart from your daily streching routine and warm up you need to hold the splits as far as your muscles harden and hold this for 2 minutes . Make sure your holding the position with both your hands to the floor , feet pointed, back knee on the floor . In 7 months you will be able do it (stick to it almost daily and NEVER do it without warm up and warm out . Good luck

About "accepting your limitations" - this attitude can sometimes be unnecessarily limiting! Never assume a limitation unless it's proven. Prematurely accepting "the way one is" can lead to unnecessarily remaining as one is. When it comes to flexibility, unless you have a scenario where one bone is banging into another bone - there is still potential to gain further range of motion with the careful and persistent work as described in this video.

I wasn't flexible at all and around two years ago I started to stretch a little bit, like just in my bed and now I can do the split in one side (yeah, forgot to stretch the second side) and my back flexibility has improved (also watch Anna Mcnulty will help)

Remember this is just my opinion, but with me I started my stretching journey (and I kinda got lazy) but I used Anna Mcnulty at first and I found I wasn’t really getting very far so I ended up re-doing my stretching routine and went with Alivia D’andrea if I’m saying this correctly and I found way more progress I’m sure Anna helps a lot of people get where they want to get but I just found Alivia more helpful and she helped me get my Scorpion although I’m not sure if I still have it because again I got lazy idk maybe people will find Anna or Alivia more helpful that is all I have to say lol

Thank you very much! I have been stretching pretty consistently for three months now and I am really making progress! I have learned to listen to my body and to push myself in the right way. Progress came very slowly, but I am very proud of the progress I've made so far, which is the most important I think. This video is very encouraging!

This was definitely motivating cause alot of times I hated looking at myself when it comes to arabesques or penches (I really hate penches) because of my semi tight hip flexors but now I will take these pearls of wisdom and embrace !y capability to improve safely while at the same time do what I can each day to reach my goal.

My left splits was always better than my right. My left leg is dominant for certain things... like soccer and splits. But when I do cartwheels I do my right side. I didn't do dance in high school. I recently joined my dance club at university and one of my goals is to get my splits back. I'm surprised they are in the same spot they were the last time I was active/fit/did dance which was 7-8 years ago.

I personally feel that since I knew how to do the splits in 5th grade, then started stretching again recently, that’s why I’ve been able to get my splits back really quickly. I have been having trouble with my left splits, my right leg won’t go all the way down. Any tips?

Gr8 advice and it inspires me to keep trying and working to get past 130 degrees in my center splits, I have my left and even to some extent an over split and got my right down twice, Looking forward to your next center split routine and hope it is a long one because the longer I work the more flexible I get at the time, Thanks Lazy Dancer from stuck in the middle Michele lol

I've been stretching by back for like 5 months now and I could actually see the difference when I had done it for about 2 months or so. I also stretch my right split but not my left. I can do an oversplit from a chair with my right leg in front but I couldn't even get a left leg split to the ground...

Is it normal when you do leg circles while laying on your back your hip cracks? But, not just cracks, but it’s as if, it gets super tight and I have to move back and go down slowly until it, pops? It’s probably not normal haha. I’ve been working on getting my hips more open because I think that’s my worst enemy right now, but it’s hard. Do you have any tips?
