What are the facts about how long it really takes to learn to sing well? Are you ready for the truth?
How Long Does It Take To Get Good At Singing?
That is a loaded question.
So many people want to take the diet pill to lose weight quickly without having to exercise and maintain a good healthy diet.
But deep down inside everyone knows that just taking a diet pill is not going to give you the long term results you were looking for and yet people fall for this over and over and over again.
The reason this question is loaded is because so many vocal coaches and people selling singing courses pander to this kind of thought.
You have people telling you you can sing in 30 days. You can start to learn to sing in 30 days but please don't expect to be a singer in 30 days any more than you would expect to be an athlete or proficient at a musical instrument in 30 days.
And your definition of good and my definition of a good are probably two different things, ha ha!
Truth be told, with good, proper training, you will start to see very strong results in 3 to 6 months and should get pretty decent in about a year. This is realistic and practical. Anything less than this is someone trying to sell you something that doesn't exist.
In about three years you could get really good if you really apply yourself.

I’ve been in lessons for 5 years now. It took a few years to get comfortable singing acapella, and develop chest voice. I was head voice dominant and had no clue what chest voice/belting was and it took a long time to develop the muscles needed! I’m still not perfect but I’m 100x better than I was before training!

Most of us get discouraged because we are not a Freddie or Mariah from the getgo. Yes, people are born with extra vocal chord folds or perfect pitch or whatnot- but the truth is that IF YOU HAVE A VOICE, YOU CAN SING. It's only a matter of controlling your voice and developing your ear. I'm a piano player and I just plain refused to sing until I met my wife who is a singer. I kept doing my vocal warm-ups seriously for 2 years now and now I'm a competent singer who is trying to extend my range. And it's working because I'm persistent! Every time I rehearse a new song, it seems like it's too high. For example, "When we were young" by Adele. First week it seem very high. After 14 days it feels a little low. So I'll put on Capo 1. OK, with Capo 1 it's just right. More demanding, but just right. After another week, it's not even too difficult with Capo 1. So I'll put Capo on 2. Damn! .. That's really high sing. But after a week of practice, I can sing it with confidence just with Capo 2. Then I'll check the girls' covers on KZbin. Damn! .. They also sing it with Capo on 2 with a same chords. ... I finally became a girl ...! ...😂 ( ...Ken therapy... channel was founded 3 years ago in honor of Ken Tamplin)

I tried different teachers for many years, but with Ken’s course I finally got results and made progress. Still working to get better every day, and I keep rewatching older lessons every now and then in between practice in case I got sloppy after a few months. Of course everyone has to find out for themselves what teacher and course work best for you. Personally though, I can only say Ken’s course was the best that ever happened to me as far as singing’s concerned. Thank you, Ken! You rock! 🙌👏

So long I have been walking the wrong path in my journey to singing and all the bs opinions (lies of course) of some KZbin vocal... whatever... Confused me alot but now I have found the thing that I always hear in singers voice that i really wanted ,resonance!! (the result of the overtones from vocal cords being amplified by the formants in the resonators mouth, throat, nasal cavity) and it changed my life, I guess, Still a long way to go.

Ken, I started your course in December of 2019 when I was 19, though I had watched your KZbin videos for years before. When I was 16, I heard Skid Row’s ‘I Remember You’ for the first time, and was absolutely blown away by the vocals, especially the ending scream. In that moment I thought, if I could ever sing like anybody, I’d want to sound like that. Sebastian Bach’s voice blew me away and I wondered for years how he was able to sound how he did. Turns out, he is bel canto trained and what your course teaches is very similar. I am now 21 and after two years in your course I am unbelievably able to sing everything he can. I can control my voice in ways I never thought would have been possible. I now have endless tools in my singing tool box thanks to you. Thank you. Your course has made my dream come true and I can’t believe it. I’m still improving, and always will be, as this is my heart’s passion. I am no where near perfect but my voice has grown tremendously thanks to you. I love you for that. Thank you Ken.

How long to be a good on the singing . Never bec on some people you will be good on some you are fantastic . And always the biggest problem is yourself :) . You can train 40 years even if you dont just learn Belcanto and how too place your sound you can learn it from Ken or other way it s just you need what i reccomend always is just go too the Classic opera couch and learn from them put 2-3 years in work pay for the real information or from Ken no mater and learn real techniques real placmenmt in a sound For Ken saiyn Place A . and this stuff can be eizi undrestand but for people understanding how too even place A wher too build vocalistions where we product voices and everything with it dude NO ONE TALKS ABOUT IT just no one . It's like secret Tabooo or something . Why no one saiyng where we should work with our air what cooms from that . Why no one go to this stuff it s so important in me opinion bec from this stuff everything begining . And if someon e dont undrestand this fact he will never become good singer never just never .. I Really hope someday Ken will do it free show 99,999% of us people :) where we should move our singing fundaments i know it bec i study a lot Luciano Pavarotti singing or yo can study Caruso singing or any fantastic Opera singing from them you can understand this fundaments . Bec from those we just make fundaments on our voices that we resonate and creat all kinds of techniques all . All become from fundaments ;). That s what i really belive !!

He is of Polynesian descent (say no more) and has the most beautiful voice. He does a great cover of Crowded House among other songs but check out this one as he sings one of his traditional songs, it's superb. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooWlhayGfJeksM0 There's a video of him with Michael Buble where Michael is in pure shock of how good he can sing.

ken i could pop falsetto, no training, when i was 17 teen- i mean mercyful fate/king diamond was my favorite singer and "bands". i had the vocals and bass and guitar parts on lock. but this is the first time in the time i have been watching your channel, i disagree. no one can do more then the lord/generics gave them. we can all do better with hard work. in 53 and i know it will never come back.. but invoking Maria Carey, who possesses a five-octave vocal range, and has the ability to reach notes beyond the 7th octave. (whistle register ) none of us (non superhumans) are going to reach that point. so id invoke Roger Taylor, Rik Emmett ect. you said in another vid. you could 4th d over middle c. and higher with good Technique. but Maria is a mutant in a good way. and i will take a guess, you practiced martial arts under a good instructor.

KTVA rocks, seriously! I have put quite a lot of work in the course during the last 2 months and it seems there is always some new little thing that is being added to the vocal toolbox each week. The most obvious thing is that it is a lot easier to carry belted pure chest notes or chest dominant mix sounds. When I started I had range, but could not control it. Now I can hover way up for a longer period of time. God bless! Keep on rocking Mr. Tamplin!

Ken, can everyone be really good at singing? I'm asking that because I don't really see myself as a good singer. I read tons of comments where people say that they got pretty good at singing, but it gets me very sceptical about my capability of being great. I tried many different courses and in-person lessons, I got better, but still I feel like I have so much to go through, that sometimes I just lose hope that I will ever get to those places and maybe it's just not for me.

Thank you Ken for your honest opinion. This is very good common sense ! It makes sense and always enjoy practical realistic insight!~ In America and in the world that we live in today i play classical piano also guitar the basics on guitar. I know for a fact that even though music is somewhat intrinsic for me and i may have a descent ear, Picking up the art of playing an instrument takes what i call the three P's of Piano First of all you have to have a "Got to Wanna" approach! Which to me is having a Passion for the first P ! The Second pivotal point of the three P's is Practice , Practice, Practice!!!!! You get out of it what you put into it!!!! Practice always makes for Perfection. The final and the most important in my opinion is that we live, especially in the digital age where we get fast results!!!! Especially in America where we want answers and see the end results almost every time we even think about things!!!! The final P is PATIENCE!!!!!! Patience will get you to soak up everything and be present in the moment at hand! I think that as exited as i wanted to get good at playing the piano, which in time with the other two P's in place the most difficult for me was Patience because i wanted to be good NOW!!! lol ~!!!! What a foolish you man I was to think that it would come over night! What you said in this video makes soo much practical sense i don't think i would have any difference in advice if i where to tell someone how long it would take to sound decent or At least acceptable at piano. !!!! It takes all the P factors that i had mentioned Maybe not in the order i listed but you get the point! Looking back Once i realized how foolishly inpatient I actually was I realized there was no further room to grow because i forfeited the journey on the process of learning entirely. There was no story . When in anything i put my mind to now, I make an effort to take a realistic assessment and realize that there will be accomplishments and failures along the way but it is the struggle and the fight that make the story! I cherish Being in the "Now " Right here Right NOW!!!! Don't forget the process and never rob yourself of the story that brought you to the final result God bless you Ken !!!!

First, someone will have to define what "being good" means. Singing is a lot more than just hitting the notes. For me, a good singer is a complete singer. Diction, dynamics, ornaments, proper pronounciation od letters, overall "feel" when to use one of these tools (prob the most important part). Then, how many ganre can you sing? Only 1? Or more? When it comes to intonation, it doesen't take much to hit 90% of the notes right. But for me, what separates a good from average singer is those 10%. Attention to detail, ofc using chest/head/mix/belt when necessary. Vocal range? I was and still am a huge fan of transposing songs, yet that didn't stop me from expanding my range. So, how long does it take to get good? A lifetime.

I'm halfway through my second year of singing, and I'm now starting to feel comfortable and confident with my voice enough to start releasing music. Granted I do practice A LOT and record A LOT. It does take time and hard work but it is soooo worth it.

About 50 years? I started in the choir about 11. About 2014 I tried for a barbershop choir. I also did a funeral. Universaly consistent verdict... You were crap! After about 18 mths lockdown, practising piano daily I began to sing again about a month ago having been pushed my Willie myettes Misty tutorial. Very weird I found not only could I sing... I had a half decent timbre. Nothing had changed cept my 3 hr a day piano but some how this had stabilised my voice : I just hit the notes right in the middle. It was like after months of practice I had completely internalised scales, & could reproduce them with no effort. I could also do solid chromatic.,. This might be a clue as to how piano exercises became vocally mapped. I had played these sequences so many times they became part of me. If anyone can explain this id love to know. Abraco Ken ur amazing!

I needed more than 1 year because I consciously knew what I was doing but learned that on my own way I mean practicing alone at home. My recent videos weren't that good at some time ago because I was just a beginner but soon I'll post better ones... If I had a great teacher like Ken maybe it'd be fewer months cause it depends on faith and if you have such a huge thirst for knowledge... I did practice every single day I swear it....

Hi Ken, was sorting through my vinyl collection a few days ago, found a fresh faced young Ken there: Joshua 'surrender' 1986 with the photo cover art. Fantastic album, bought it new back in the day -the guitar playing style really amazed me. Brilliant songs too - as good or better than some of the platinum better known acts of the time. Never got into the later albums.

p.s. any idea why the album has apparently two different covers and two different mixes - solos on 'hold on' for example... I have the (better) mix and uk photo cover. Rooock!

Been on the course for just about 3 years now. I've seen a ton of improvement. I mainly do the scales from the course for 2 hours 4-5 days a week. I don't usually practice songs a ton but it's really cool to go back to songs I hadn't sung for a while and then boom! I was able to hit notes easier than before.

I've gotten so much better since I started your course in Jan 2020. I'm still learning so much tho. There is so much to singing I can't believe it. The first thing I think is I really grew my chest voice. Then I grew my head voice even higher and then my mixed voice came along. I also worked on breathing from the start and do an exercise for breathing in 10 seconds, holding 10 seconds and breathing out 10 seconds (30 second breath) that I do while I'm laying in bed at night 10 times. Even tho I worked on diaphragm support from the beginning, I wasn't really getting it. But now I'm starting to really feel it and get the results. I have learned that I can get different tonality by moving my larynx position. In fact when I try to sing like a man (lowered) I can get amazing results and get away from the little girl voice I often hear of myself. Oh and of course my pitch is 500% better. I do take private skype lessons from Sara Loera and she tested my ear the other day and it was perfect. Yay me!

My opinion. Some were born with it. Others grow tremendously from lessons or a vocal coach. I had one for 5 months when I was in college. Does Dylan have a great voice? It's subjective in many ways. Thinking of signing up Ken.
