How Long Should I Preach? New Study on Sermon Length of Growing Churches

How long should you preach? There are a lot of opinions out there on sermon length, but we need more than just feelings.
Unfortunately, there is not a lot of data out there. So I decided to do some new research.
I tracked the average sermon length of the 50 fastest-growing churches in America.
This is what I found, and what we can learn.

I aim for 32 minutes but it depends on context. I’ve read that when considering how to preach that 1 minute of boring is 1 minute too long! Plus I think we’ve all been guilty of saying too little because we say too much! I’m really enjoying the videos!

On average, I preach for 45-60 minutes in a Home Church and then a service in which I show a biblical Christian movie lasts from an hour and a half to 2 hours. The services in which I show a Christian movie is once every 4 weeks.

At seminary I did 3 courses in homiletics (liturgical/narrative/expository) but our denomination's (Roman Catholic) seminary advised us that the ideal sermon length should be between 3-5 minutes during the week and 5-7 minutes on the weekends. Pope Francis has said sermons should be max 10 minutes.

The Holy Spirit should have the clock on sermon. It all depends on the dynamics and power the preacher are under. Some speaker are more captivating and some are informative.

My former pastor preached 60 to 90 minutes and started to repeat himself. Suggestion - vary the length. Go with the promoting of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes approx 30 minutes, sometimes longer.

Interesting. Our pastor preaches over an hour every week. And we've seen significant growth for 10 years straight. Interesting that our secular friends and even ourselves - our culture will watch a movie for 2 hours without blinking an eye. Personally I find this study an indictment on the maturity of the church in our day. If you've got a strong expositional teacher that is engaging the people with the beauty and excellence and infinite worth and glory of Christ, there is little more compelling than that. What an indictment!

Secular movies you mean. Real Christian movies are on the same level as a sermon while secular movies are nothing but entertainment. Anyways it’s sad how someone would be turned off by a 1 hour sermon but be interested in watching a 3 hour secular movie. 😩

There's alot of wisdom here. Too long and you lose the Main point of the text in the midst of a firehose of details. It definitely depends on the hearers, but unless you have a room full of academics, the chance that your sheep are going to be intellectually hungry enough to digest the parsing of all the verbs is low. While you may have a few geeks who love to hear the origin of the word, most trust and rely on the English translation and will do better walking away with strong application that an hour long sermon, heavily relying on the original language. Ps, really enjoy your videos, it's clear you spend alot of time on them. Best of luck in your Ministry.
