Actually, would have been interesting to see how many iterations of your code ran, basically if you had a thread run hard for a minute (counting iterations) and then sleep for a minute you could compare not only how long they last (pure battery comparison) but how much work is completed before they exhausted the battery. This could give some very interesting measurements relating to performance vs battery life - especially around your M2 max claims.

Your videos are gold for me, as you answer the real questions I have in a more pragmatic and practical way than most other creators! The only thing I'm missing and really keen to find out before proceeding to a new purchase (13900H-xps vs m2-max) is the battery life of a linux guest VM vs the host macos. I'd "normally" expect the macbook with the always-running linux VM to die way faster - which is a negative for me - but it's very unclear how much faster. Hope you may have an answer to that as well, or it might be an interesting piece of content! Thank you anyway for all your effort! 🙇‍♂

6 hrs is nothing. I do go the entire day, sometimes because I forget to plug in, or I am on a long trip, or I am working with my MacBook Pro on my lap and the cable gets in the way. I work to an external 1 tb SSD, because I am trying to make my internal SSD last as long as possible, which is an additional drain on the battery.

7:01 the problem of your test is that it assume a 100% load on the processor on all units for 20 seconds, while the computational power delivered were different. Since the M2 pro / M1 Pro / M2 all shares different computational power, the same task may takes different amount of time to be finished across these unit. for example, tasks that took 20 seconds on the M2 may only require 15 seconds on the M2 pro / M1 Pro. tasks that took 20 seconds on the M1/M2 Pro may takes 27 seconds on the M2, this create variations on the results. this is due to the null command will max out the cpu. a test that focus on daily tasks would be more appropriate since you will mostly the efficient cores in daily tasks and these machines especially those with larger battery should lasted longer under the same amount of workload.

that beginning skit was pretty funny lol - nice video 👍 i am a little bit confused by the test, specifically by the python script you were running. i am not sure what script that was, however you said it “maxes out the CPU.” my concern/question is: isn’t this a little unfair given that if you were to run programs normally, the M2 MAX would reach its max CPU usage much later than the M1 PRO due to the discrepancy in power. but if both are getting _maxed out_, then the battery is going to get depleted at its fastest rate - which then makes sense that the M2 MAX battery died first because that one has the most powerful CPU and requires the most power to run its CPU at max. does this make sense or am i far in the deep end?

The test may be a bit broken. :/ The faster computers got more work done than the slower computer, and more work takes more battery. You should find that the number of iterations on the faster computers is higher than the slower. This is another indicator of work performed. The work load slept a minute between iterations. If you could time the work so it's done every minute or two on clock time that might be closer to being a consistent workload across the board. Of course, they all fell into a reasonable window anyway. Except that one. Maybe check iterations counts? :)
@AZisk

tests aren’t perfect, sure. but it gives a roughly idea of how long a machine would last doing this work. if I based thr trigger off a cron job, other people would complain:) now if you’re curious about the time it takes for each machine to run the program, then that is coming next week

Your reasoning is sound, but the M1/M2 being BOTH fast and frugal was their major selling point. So if ignoring performance we could just as well use a 5 watt Atom CPU which would give us even better battery life than the Apple CPU. So no matter way to measure, they all have their pros and cons.

The important thing here is that your M1 Max doesnt have a new battery. It has less then original capacity and still managed to hold almost the exact same time as his successor. That tells you a lot about the battery consumption of the new chip.
@jutjub22
@jutjub22 2 ай бұрын
No, the thing is that for that same time, M2 did more work because it is faster doing same task. If you measure battery based on work done, not time that it used 100% of resources, you will get more real-world results. Because 100% on m2 is like 120% on M1, or so. If you test M2 on 805% usage, then you would see more realistic data

I'm sorry to say that but this is not close to a real world test. As you max out the CPU for the same time on all machines you can't take into account that some CPUs are faster than others. You have to hit them with the same task on the same interval. Like building a project every 10mins or so. If you just want to compare them you could also run the tasks back to back and count the completions until the battery is dead.

But if you really want to strictly lock it to 50 or 80%, then yeah, those are options you can take. Macbooks plugged in retail stores are configured with the defaults already - they’re plugged in all the time and their battery cycle counts remain low and are usually managed by macOS to charge only up to 80% to preserve battery life.

WOW… under 90% battery health with 110 cycles? Thats really sad. Im using nearly since day 1 on my 16“ M1 Pro base model AlDente, im typically restricting charge anywhere between 50 and 80%, depending on the use, 2-4x a month i do a full charge for proper balancing of the battery. I am actually at soon 200 charging cycles (a lot of mobile power usage, pretty much exactly 1 year old) and with a battery health fluctuating anywhere 94 and 97%. With my AlDente charge limiting especially when being for days on AC only with 50%-60% charge limit is a battery saver and i hope i can make it last as long as the MacBook Pro itself.

All i can say about my M1 Pro base model in 16“… extraordinary battery runtime, if im coming close to 3 hours i need maximum brightness (probably even HDR brightness via Vivid app) or some „heavy“ load. I am typically using the MacBook Pro easily for 10-15 hours display on time, but since the battery is that big and if i have for example still 80% left close to the end of the day at study, i just let it render/upscale anything i would otherwise do at home and plugged in and go down to 20-40% so i can say at least „i need this huge battery“. As said… when not intentionally forcing it to, i dont even need half of the 16“ M1 Pros battery, at a regular day in the university i need anything between 20% regularily and maximum 40% of the batteries capacity. Still, i LOVE it, im so happy i didnt buy the M1 Max, even more wasted/unused power. In fact i would have wished a REGULAR M1 with 16“ (and 16/512 at least…) and huge battery, this would be an awesome long runner!

I wish i watched this before i bought my MacBook. I was under the impression real world test withs MacBook's were 17 hours of battery life. if its around 4 hours i could stick with my windows box as its basically the same usage.

87% on 111 cycles doesn't sound right.

M1 Pro: 84% design capacity on 107 cycles (measured with coconutBattery). I have already seen other M1 Pros with 90% design capacity with only 40 cycles.

Considering that the m2 max is just slightly overclocked compared to the m2 pro and that this is a CPU test, it lost a lot more battery than what I would expect (compared to the m2 pro) haha But anyway, I’m also fine with the battery on my m2 max and I never hear the fan 😍

How many cycles each machine run for your loop? It the Pro run much less loop cycles then it won’t be the winner even if it last longer.
