Refinery29 Birthtosociety great segment something that needed to be said I feel that the young people in my community Sunny South Dallas r consumers of their on culture & style we where made to believe if you choose to dress that way it was not cool you where poor thrifty stores shopping was where you're mom went to buy clothes because you couldn't afford anything else .Now with this big movement I call Robinthehood culturally has flip the script on a lifestyle that all others can be apart of my mom would always tell me don't be mad if someone takes something you had and make money with it if you had a chance to do the same the only problem mom is we didn't have a Chance.

It's very conservative here, so walking around you won't see a lot of the exposed skin (ignoring that it is also winter and we do have a mild form of winter here), and typically the people who have money wear very low key outfits. Top brands, but nothing flashy. Vancouver is usually exaggerated as the "yoga pants" city, but that's an extreme claim. You see that a lot because a lot of people do yoga, go to the gym, and hike. You can do extreme hikes where you need gear, but there is so much nature here that is accessible by transit or walking. But....it's not the majority of the fashion here. I should mention that most men in Canada have zero fashion sense, and no style. It's sad. There is also the overwhelming "poor" population, who, in other cities would not be poor, but they don't care about brands or trends and stick with cheap fast fashion. Most young people follow basic trends but nothing too street. Canada, in general, is not very fashion friendly. There are people with good style, but nothing bold. Most people with the best and boldest fashion sense are in high school, where you can see a lot of the street wear trends, after that fashion usually dies. Mostly due to peer pressure, or less free time to follow trends. Oh, also in club culture. Maybe. I try to avoid going to clubs. :o I would like to mention that I love fashion, but I have a poor sense of style. I like looking at these lovely stylish people, but I also don't want to dress that way. I want to do my own thing and not have to worry about if something it on trend. I mostly dress like a 5 year old, or a teenage boy.

ALL fashion is a rip off of someone else's idea... it will never end, it gets re-cycled every 10 years, fashion students are taught to forecast trends (figure when the new generation is too young to remember the old trend so it's safe to bring it back and change it up a bit & re-release it), claiming street style is ridiculous look at style in the 80's/90's and you'll get it... everyone dressed like that and it's just coming back around with a new spin. "Calabasas in aspirational" hi ok no, Calabasas native here to confirm that it IS as boring of a suburbia as you would expect, everyone looks the same, there's nothing to do, and it's filled to the brim with privilege and superficiality. the benefits of living here are the overall safety (especially if you live in one of the gated communities), the reasonable distance from the beach/WeHo/LA in general, and the good public schools. Otherwise, that girl in the video hit the nail on the head with "if you spend your whole life here, you're not gonna have a real grasp on reality." It is a god damn bubble out here.
@misstinglesasmr20135 жыл бұрын
You cannot confirm this, they're out here trying to chase their dreams of being fashion designers. They probably see Calabasas as a safe/artistic playground. I live in a suburb also, and most of the people I know who claim "oh it's boring, there's nothing to do." are usually the idiots who lay around at home all day and literally they have no hobbies or superficial talent. It's honestly a privilege to live in the suburbs. School is more important there and it's easier to pursue your biggest dreams in life. People who don't live in suburbs find this hard, because they have to balance their lives with surviving and being safe. It's often people who live outside the suburbs never pursue their dreams.

all calabasas and rich streetwear is obviously inspired by poor, (brown and black) communities especially from the 1990's-2000's. This was a very.... interesting documentary to see how hiphop/black streetwear has inspired the suburbs and rich (white) celebrities alike. maybe we could see fashion styles from poorer, actual hood brown/black communities and not just streetwear, but alternative, punk, etc. styles from black/brown people as well.

"Street wear" was inspired by many different people. Black people just like to claim they either own or invented everything on the planet. I mean, they are wearing ADIDAS and Tommy Hilfiger and claiming it as their own. Both are owned and created by white people. Also, you can't claim that a fucking sweatsuit is owned by a race or attach a culture to it. People need to stop being so fucking ridiculous. "black culture" in the USA is just Western culture. If you are from the USA then it's Western culture. Stop making shit up, creating fake labels and trying to segregate people. Grow up.

@michaelzero52785 жыл бұрын
Sheeple🐑🐑🐑
@SourEggz5 жыл бұрын
No - I disagree, they are the very epitome of the American Dream. They are incredibly wealthy and orient their careers around consumerism - maintaining some “traditional values” such as the accumulation of wealth above all else or minimizing the struggles of others as them not working as hard as you. They also have set the current beauty standards - everyone wants to look like Kim Kardashian, including her siblings. They live a lifestyle many would consider the peak of living comfortably - excessively comfortably, without seemingly having to put forth too much effort (I say seemingly because I don’t think it is true). While, it may seem like a sad affair to say they are the American Dream... I don’t think it is a wrong assessment. Now, perhaps I am misinterpreting what the American Dream is because I am not American, but that is what it seems like to me...
@blackswanvante5 жыл бұрын
Sour Eggz that’s so sad that people aspire to just be clones of self centered people back in my day, the American Dream was to get an education, make an honest living and live a comfortable life away from violence but oh how times have changed people care more about hair extensions than their education lmao
@SourEggz5 жыл бұрын
Øh Ms. Believer I would argue that the American Dream hasn’t changed but rather the vehicle it is presented in. These kids in the video are likely attending prestigious schools, same with the Kardashians and Jenners, and are likely going to attend Ivy Leagues or head into a career that is very lucrative yet taxing on their time. I would say that despite the perception of the Kardashians - they are extremely on the grind for their wealth, despite the picture they’ve painted for the public - being that they are stupid, or relatable, or luxurious. It is all a fabrication... just like wealth has always been for public figures. You can look all throughout history of the bourgeoisie and see similar patterns of pageantry, flaunting and grotesque use of money in spite of the majority of impoverished people. The American Dream is basically this lie sold on a silver platter that you too can become extremely wealthy... if you buy this or that... or hey, if you have a great education and get into massive debt... or buy a good home in a good neighbourhood... etc. The whole notion of “keeping up with the Jones’s” is this idea of trying to accumulate or obtain what the perceived successful have. And, for many, this is what the American Dream means for them. In many ways, it is a system of self-oppression through debt, feelings of inadequacy and struggle. We will never have what the Jones’s have, we’ll never keep up with their trends and their lifestyle... and we were never meant to. Or at least, this is my perspective. I think it goes much deeper than hair extensions. It is marketing and capitalism gone AWOL. There is a great video about What Andy Warhol Ate which kind of touches on the subject of popular culture and how his fondness for mass production and marketing that reflected in his artwork; this idea of keeping up with the extremely wealthy through obtaining material goods. Especially his quote about Coke Cola, and how the whole selling point is that anyone can have it. “Anyone can look like a Kardashian” provided they acquire the material goods the possess - or sell. Anyone can use their favourite skincare line, learn how to contour and pose in a picture... but only the already wealthy can be like them truly. Not saying this is true for everyone, just expanding on what what I meant.

Great video, this is such an interesting phenomenon of the appropriation of "poor people clothing". Like Balenciaga's new sneakers look like the cheap shoes kids used to make fun of, I remember we called it "dad fashion". Same with the Adidas track suits that less than a decade ago were usually associated with images of unemployed Russian men squatting in gutters. "Destroyed" denim, ripped shirts, oversized hoodies, plastic shoes, the list is endless. Personally I enjoy the look, but there's an intense degree of irony there.

Sub-cultures.Usually defined as a cultural group within a larger culture, often having beliefs or interests at variance with those of the larger culture. However, this definition is not true, its the other way around "variance with those who otherwise make a statement in which other cultures deny" White people dressing like the black culture, wearing dreads. Some may see this as a bad thing when it is actually a good thing in that it makes people of all races more cohesive as a people (we are all the same) seen in the younger generation, having friends from all cultural backgrounds...this dynamic creates discourse and understanding and ultimately better relationships and neighborhoods.

Cultural appropriation is about the most realest form of bias out there that exist! It doesn’t have anything to do with racism. It has everything to do with superiority complex that’s becoming alarmingly inherent in our society. The fact that if a white person does something that other races have been doing for generations, it somehow elevates it in status in society and is suddenly marketed to the masses. Prime example: yoga! Many people couldn’t even tell you yoga is not a western invention but an Indian religious tradition. Indian yogis who have dedicated their entire life or may even descend from lineage of noble yogis isn’t nearly as appealing to the masses or as appealing on Instagram as the yoga taught in a studio by a white young adult wearing leggings/sports bra who spent a month learning it from another white girl. That is cultural appropriation. The fact that a white person doing yoga is desirable and instagram worthy yet when you post a real yogi in traditional attire doing yoga, it’s not. Like the girl said, Durag on Kylie is cute yet durag on a black girl in public is “ghetto.” It’s this continued ingrained notion that all other races and their traditions are inferior yet when a person of white descent does it, it’s suddenly acceptable and other races are taught to emulate that.

You better believe it! As soon as Kylie Jenner began dating him, she glew up! He influenced her style and she displayed his influence on her social media. Look up Kylie Jenner transition. The moment she began dating Tyga marked a time she began setting these black culture trends you see in the video. The same thing happened to Kim and Kanye! Bomber jackets, oversized looks, etc.
