In honour of our wonderful fungal comrades and the fact that 9/20 was this past weekend (9/20 is the magic mushroom version of cannabis' 4/20), here's a video going over all the main brain imaging findings with psilocybin (the active compound in magic mushrooms) over the past decade.
The video should be accessible to all, but if you have zero background in brain networks or the default mode network, I highly recommend watching my video 'fMRI Brain Networks in 10 minutes' prior to this one. Enjoy!

No I agree you need to keep having decent trips at least every a few months at least 3 - 5 dried grams possibly more depending on which shrooms you eating

@@acoatl8454 It does sound like you fell into your old patterns and habits that the shrooms showed you. Everything takes work and discipline. It’s up to you to make the decision and take control of the mindset you had after your trip. Happiness takes work, remaining optimistic and positive take work.

I haven't found anything quite like your channel on youtube, despite the fact that learning more about the correlation between neurology and psychedelics (and probably also -"therapy") seems to me absolutely fundamental for anyone researching on the nature of consciousness. Fantastic work, please, for the sake of us all, keep on doing it.

I have been working with the medicines in the way of the old medicine men to try an help myself. Figuring out I’m on the autistic spectrum, along with other mental issues, I am now conducting a study on how the medicines are helpin broth cognitive ability, create new patterns and routines in my life. I am taking an intro to neuroscience offered thru Harvard now, and will be pursuing more knowledge in the molecular biology studies to learn how to understand what the researchers are finding out to make my own medicines. Thank you for your information!

Hello Manesh. Thanks a lot for the video. I really enjoyed it. I’m exploring this amazing area and your video really helps me organize a clearer roadmap from what I read. Would you be interested in an episode about a few proposed models such as entropic brain,REBUS etc. and related interesting concept such as predictive coding ?just thinking it might be good complementary to this episode :)

Great video, thanks!! I have a question regarding the hippocampus' function. Since the variance increases and the hippocampus becomes more dynamic in the psychedelic state, does it form 'new memories' combining our emotions and feelings due to our set and setting? OR, does it gain deeper and faster access to 'already existing memories' in our unconscious? The reason I asked this is that some people believe that they saw themselves in different bodies, almost like a 'past-life' memory. I try to see the science behind it?
@ThePsychedelicScientist
@ThePsychedelicScientist 3 жыл бұрын
This is a really good question! The short answer is that we don't know. But I can speculate based on past work. The idea prevalent in past research with psychedelics (especially in Robin Carthart-Harris' Entropic Brain Theory) is that the hippocampus is typically being constrained in normal consciousness. Basically the brain only allows limited set of memories/thoughts to emerge (based on how relevant/important they are, etc.). But then when in a psychedelic state, the connections which constrain the hippocampus are reduced and it becomes much more dynamic and entropic, leading to all sorts of memories pouring into consciousness. At the same time, this dynamic and entropic activity could also be combining past memories in a variety of ways as well (hence the crazy, non-sensical imagery that you can experience, which often blends together various things you've previously perceived). So I would say both of the things you suggested are possible. As for 'past life experiences', I feel like a lot of the time these are a result of an imaginative reconstruction where you're combining past experiences and your sense of self into what seems to be a real past experience. But who knows :)

Not that it’s of importance given the context, I feel there has been understated that psilocybin is a prodrug for psilocin. Psilocin is the chemical interacting with the brain, but that’s mainly for stoichiometry people, still understated.

I'm curious to why you never mentioned the amygdala. From what I've researched blood flow is slowed going to the amygdala causing less anxiety and depression. Is this true?
@ThePsychedelicScientist
@ThePsychedelicScientist 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, there is some research suggesting that after psilocybin-assisted therapy there is less resting blood flow in the amygdala and this might be (one of many factors) related to depression reductions. But that effect is very likely not due to psilocybin alone - but the whole treatment, which includes extensive supportive psychotherapy. In this video I was focusing on research relating to the experience induced by psilocybin - not the long term effects of psilocybin therapy
