Yeah, I mean, you can do it with no board too. A lifting surface generates lift proportional to speed, so no matter how many holes you put in it, even until it's gone completely, it will work.

"The hole actually makes the bord better" ... and thus, the Louis & Grace surfboard empire is born haha. Also, I wonder if the angle of the holes would have made any significant differences. I mean, since the theory is that holes reduce drag as there's less surface area, I wonder if making the holes at an angle would help as you could potentially reduce the drag caused by how the water hit the inside of the bord.

The hole's who'd increase drag . The water is jetting out of hole's because the edges of the hole scoop up the water.the flatter the surface the less drag it who'd have in the water. My bes guess is that the hole's created more drag making it more stable / easier to ride.

You should have collected data on the drag of the board with a scale on the pulling rope. A data-logger there synced with the test footages would've given you info on wether it drags more or less.
@brandonloukota4760
@brandonloukota4760 2 жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t necessarily give accurate data. Because the tension in the rope depends on where in the wave you are and a few other things. At some points even they let go completely and just surf on the wave, so obviously if they had the rope still at that point the tension would be zero regardless of if the board had holes or not. But the drag wouldn’t necessarily be the same even though the force is

If you do barefoot waterskiing, then technically you could "cover" 100% of the board in holes and it would still work.
@mattiusvalentine3199
@mattiusvalentine3199 2 жыл бұрын
The physics do change because a surfer paddling for a wave goes from a dead stop to having to paddle the board with holes, or drag like a keel, to popping up and riding it. Basically behind a boat your able to forgo the drag by muscling the rope your holding onto. You can pull a log behind a boat, but can you paddle one?

Haven't watched it yet, but I theorize that the buoyancy wouldn't be an issue so much as the drag. More holes means more resistance to forward movement. If you angle or design the holes a certain way, you could have many more while minimizing the drag caused by them.

Research "Wetted area" and it will help explain what you are seeing. Also, I think you could accomplish the same efficiency by dimpling the bottom of the board. It would reduce the wetted area and may trap air which would reduce drag.

Imagine the board shooting away under your feet but one of your toes catches on one of the holes. ouch... Also, drilling holes in the surfboard does reduce drag but in turn reintroduce more drag depending on the angle of the holes. Think about swinging a tennis racket compared to beach paddle, less drag on a racket full holes. The holes being drilled straight down the thick surfboard does introduce some drag. It forces water straight up into the air when initially the water was flowing horizontal. Remember sticking your hands out a moving car with your palm facing forward? Changing the flow of air around your hand by rotating your hand to a more horizontal position you feel less drag. Angling the holes in the board more parallel to the flow of the water when riding it, will most likely reduce the drag on the board. But this will definitely reduce upwards force (lift). An airplane with Swiss cheese wings will have a hard time getting airborne. Meaning you will need to be pulled forward faster to get the same result as with a board without holes. Remaining high on the water, with less drag.
