I used to work at Express Oil in Gardendale and it wasn’t uncommon to see chevy and ford trucks pushing 300k-500k and some anomalies going on original engine 600k-800k. The highest I ever seen was a 1995 Nissan pickup truck that had just pulled in on a million miles and it look like it had been too. It was a little old Hispanic man that had been commuting back and forth from working in the states and going back home in Mexico.

I used to think that something with almost 200 thousand miles was way too much, until I met the honorable Toyota Sequoia. I sold my terribly unreliable 2013 Volkswagen CC I bought back on 2018 with 16k on the clock. Beautiful powerful lil car. At 27k the glass in the driver side review mirror just fell off randomly, first sign of trouble even though very minor. At 50k AC compressors breaks a couple of days of the AC breaking every warning light on the dash illuminates. Turns out bad speed sensors can cause all those lights to come on. For those issues the bill came out to just around 3 grand. At 64k all lights came on again the front speed sensors went offline as well. I wasn’t too pressed about taking it to get it fixed that soon until shortly after that I kept smelling coolant. The coolant light came on eventually so I added coolant topped it off two weeks later coolant light came on again! That’s when I said nope to Volkswagen you go something is wrong. They tell me yes the front speed sensors are bad and the water-pump is also leaking. I said to my service advisor this is just too much happening on a vehicle with low mileage and never been in a wreck. I told him after I get this fixed I’m selling it. He chirped yes I think it’s time for it to go I’ve seen you in my shop way too many times these past several months. I will never buy another Volkswagen product as long as I live. I sold it to Vroom for almost 12k. Decided to buy a cheap used car cash until the market stabilizes because the prices of new and used cars are effing ridiculous! I wanted a large and in charge and reliable. So I did my research on three full size SUV’s target years are 03-06 Chevy Tahoe, ToyotaSequoia and Nissan Armada. First pick was for Tahoe they say they last for a very long time. But the first one I went to see had 238k miles on it. Fired it up and every warning light on the dash was lit. The seller promised me before coming it had AC and it was as hot as pot roast! Transmission kicked like a horse out of second gear and the brakes had too much travel. Immediately returned to the shop and handed him the keys and walked out. That experience messed it up for all the Tahoe’s after that. Next up was the Sequoia. Had even more miles then the Tahoe at 274k. Inside was a lil worn. I almost walked away but something told to me at least start it up. So I asked for the keys. Upon starting it I was shocked to see no warning lights only but one TPM was illuminated. No worries I’m aware of the nuisance light from researching it. Engine was so quite with not one shake in it. Test drove it and the surprises just kept coming. Ain’t no way a machine with these many miles ran as smooth as butter just couldn’t believe it! I took it to a mechanic to get it looked at they checked everything. Had minor lil things here and there which was to be expected. He asked me how much are they selling it for? I told him $4500 He said go back and buy this truck it’s a great deal! And you have the legendary 4.7 Iforce million mile engine in there. That’s all I needed to hear. I’ve been in love ever since. Planning to continue buying Sequoias or tundras from this point moving forward. Although I don’t think I’ll go past 2021 because all I’ve been seeing is disasters of the 2022 Tundra’s from Wastegate to other menacing issues. I’ll pass on that until they can make updates on it. Toyota needs to hurry and make this right or forfeit their reputation of reliability.

Living in a large state, like Texas, a 10yr old vehicle, or older, is guaranteed to have 200k+. Rust free, and mostly highway miles though. My 05 escalade 6.0 had 257k when I sold it this May, zero issues. My 05 tahoe 5.3 had 277k when I sold it in July, and only codes it had, were for knock sensors, and abs module. Ran and drove fine. My 08 escalade was bought with 212k a couple months ago, zero issues. 90's-early 2000s trucks with 170-200k usually seem to have been owned by "grandpas", and you can tell by how clean and stock it usually is. 200k isn’t much even in commercial use-provided there’s been maintenance. I’ve been involved with delivery fleets at various times in my career. 3/4- and 1-ton vans had “a lot of miles” only as 500k approached. That’s when a new engine was usually needed, though the rest of the truck was pretty worn as well, so they usually got junked. Keep in mind these vans were loaded, driven by angry apes, and had oil changes only every 8-10k. Right now I’m looking at a deal on a 2001 Suburban with 220k. Miles aren’t holding me back-just MPG.

I'm arriving at the conclusion that the age of the vehicle is more important than the mileage - to a certain extent. I'd rather have a 3-year-old truck with 200k miles than a 23-year-old truck with 100k miles. Because for it to get that many miles on it in that short of an amount of time, it was likely 90% relatively benign highway miles, where the engine and transmission are in a stable state.

I'm like you, for the right price I don't care if it's at 500k miles. Actually, if it makes it to 300k+ miles and still drives good nothing noticeable going on I might even pay you double because you know that the truck was probably one of the best put together trucks and the best robot on that assembly line did everything to tolerance and that it's got a lot of life left. I mean if you think about it, any truck can make it to 100k miles and still drive just fine. Your truck makes it to 300k miles it's one of the good ones and the value should go up lol. But I also only run Amsoil in my vehicles, I have a 2018 GMC Sierra 3500 HD Crew Cab Long Bed SLE 4x4 6.0l Gasser I bought it brand new with 18 miles on it, just last month at 33k miles I changed the transmission, transfer case, and both differentials with Amsoil, my brother-in-law is like 'Why are you wasting all that money on changing the fluids it's only got 30k miles on it' I'm like, I didn't buy a 40-50k dollar truck to save a couple hundred dollars on maintenance now did I? Seats 6 people, the 8 foot bed can haul 4k pounds, and it'll tow 14k pounds (Legally), only thing it doesn't pass is a gas station and there's no reason to not keep it until it literally breaks in half from rust. And I know 300k miles is easily achievable with the 6.0l it's the best v8 gasser to ever be made and the 6 speed transmission is one of GM"s best transmissions ever made.

I always want to know the maintenance records I’ll buy high miles if someone treats their trucks like I do If they haven’t done a transmission flush every 40-60,000 miles plugs at 80,000, diff fluids and coolant flushes then they did not take care of their truck they drove and dumped.

It doesnt matter about the mileage, as long as you keep up with the maintenance (oil change, trans. Fluid change), updating any mechanical break down (axles, brakes, wheel/tires,etc)

Over about 150K is high for me, however, if the frame looks good, and the drivetrain appears to be alright, I would buy a 150K+ vehicle, just with a price reduction

You said before it is a 97 wow I was born in 1997 so that truck is about 23 years old correct . if I was to choose which one I would go with I would go to Toyota hands down because with 200 thousand miles they can still easily go 4 more years plus and I never heard of a Toyota leaving anybody stranded like they didn’t do their routine maintenance on it my second choice would be the F150 simply because I used to have one it was an 03 5.4 liter Triton V8 and it had 200,000 miles when I got it I loved it sounded great just was a great truck only thing I replaced in it was the alternator in the AC but other than that it was reliable as crap

Out of all 4 trucks the one that will probably last the longest is Eral. And on the note of abuse I bought a clearly abused truck. Idler arm bracket broken of the frame. Had to rebuild my whole front end. Had to get the sound system redone because the wiring was destroyed. My 5.3 VORTEC will definitely outlast that 5.3 ECOTEC in your Chevy it’s only competition is the tundra. But me being the IDGAF attitude said I’ll take it and make it badass again. But yea the mileage on vehicles is considered how low by the age of vehicle.

I have a 2012 Toyota Camry 2.5 with 490,000 miles on it… when I bought it, the vehicle had 36,000 miles… it was bought from Enterprise, so who knows how hard the vehicle got driven, however, its been my crosscountry vehicle, the most reliable vehicle Ive ever came across. Ive replaced all 4 struts and control arms with tie rods… besides that, Ive done 3 transmission fluid changes and regular oil changes… the car DOES drive like a new vehicle… the furthest ive driven it was from Houston,Tx to Lynden,Washington, roughly 2,800 miles each way… so in 1 week I put over 6,000 miles on it and the car just doesnt care… I bought a 2018 High Country and it barely has 98,000 miles on it and the rear differential went out along with the transmission… my Camry shifts super smooth and it literally surprisingly DOESNT have ANY leaks whatsoever… its still with original drivetrain and powertrain and Im gonna see if I can get 1 million miles on it

I'm at 245k on my ford van e350. Has the 5.4 triton but I guess all the vans were 2 valve. Runs perfectly. It needs balljoints soon but I work it hard. It'll get whatever it needs. Nothing but brakes and oils since I got it about 85k ago.
@michaelhungate7506 Жыл бұрын
That 5.4 2 valve will go alot further with good maintenance. I have an 03 F150 5.4 with the 2 valve with 413,000 miles. Purrs like a new one and has never had the valve covers off and no internal engine work. As a matter of fact is all original powertrain. The 3 valve versions have all the problems.
@rockobeam2706 Жыл бұрын
@michaelhungate7506 good to hear. My van still has years left. 413k is proof. Synthetic oil change regularly and whatever it needs ad it needs it. I got the balljoints done now. Moog brand with lifetime warranty.

It’s not just the miles of the vehicle it’s the condition of the body the paint, the frame, suspension but I would consider high miles as 300,000 or more but if it’s a diesel I would consider 600,000 or more

But I’m not really worried because Ik about motors and I have family that will know if it’s a shitbox or not. Most trucks I see range from 145k to 200k miles

2014 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel 830,000 miles used commercially to transport travel trailers. Low coolant it pushed a head gasket at 371k. At 695k miles a solenoid failed in the 8 speed transmission. Swapped in a used trans from a salvage yard. Parts $1260. 2nd motor burned a turbo at 415k. Part cost $1,072. Then heat fatigue cracked a head at 423k 794k total truck miles. Fortunately the truck is in great condition. Currently on its 2nd & likely final crate motor the truck should make a million miles in 17 months. Maybe this motor will make the 500k. Cheap disposable & super fuel efficient the ED has worked. That said the next truck will have the commercial grade Cummins. Friend & business partner got 452,000 out of his 2015 before a disintegrated fuel pump filled cylinder 3 with shrapnel. So 415k miles our average of 3. Both trucks use an EGR off aftermarket tune. Both trucks still in service.
