How many Pokemon beat Falkner without Optional Battles? - Episode 2: Early Bug and Normal Types

Minimum Battles is the ultimate challenge. But how many Pokemon can beat the first Gym of Gen 2 on Minimum Battles?
On my main channel ‪@RBYPokemonChallenges‬ , I have already completed this challenge with all 151 Pokemon on Gen 1, but Gen 2 presents a massively different challenge - sleep and Wrap were nerfed, there's no Gen 1 miss (1/256 glitch), and all the trainers have better AI. But Minimum Battles might just be possible with some effort and ingenuity.

SPOILER for quick recap of runs... ... ... Butterfree: Needs a Turn 1 confusion against Spearow and for it to hit itself afterwards at least once (possibly more, or some crit luck). Some confusion luck also needed for Pidgeotto. Definitely requires rather good luck but can be grinded for. PASS Metapod/Caterpie: LOL no. Auto-FAIL x2 Ledian: When you have very little damage yourself, it's best to make the opponent damage themselves, right? Obviously needs great confusion luck but you'll get there eventually. PASS Ledyba: For those wondering about possible confusion strats, Ledyba learns Supersonic at Lv. 8, and goes into Abe's Spearow at Lv. 6, so it's nothing but bird food there. Auto-FAIL Beedrill: With no cheese strats, Spearow absolutely feasts on the bee. FAIL Kakuna/Weedle: LOL no. Auto-FAIL x2 Ariados: Two weak moves, two Speed-lowering options that don't help when your opponent just Pecks you down in a few hits anyway... yeah, no chance here. FAIL Spinarak: Auto-FAIL Pidgeot: Shows his little brothers who's boss. PASS Pidgeotto: Shows his younger twin and other little brothers who's boss. PASS Pidgey: Throws sand at his big brother's face to eventually beat him up. PASS Noctowl: The owl used Growl to suppress the fowl, but needs a crit for Pidgeotto to throw in the towel. PASS Hoothoot: Not tested, but considering Noctowl needed a crit, Hoothoot's probably not making it through. Auto-FAIL Raticate: STAB Quick Attack from a Top Percentage Raticate is more than good enough. PASS Rattata: Sadly, not even a Top Percentage Rattata can withstand the Pecks of a Spearow. FAIL Furret: Once again, defensive moves are really good and allow Furret to easily walk its way through. PASS Sentret: Alas, even with boosting defenses it just takes too much from Spearow. FAIL Final results: PASS: 8 FAIL: 11

Love the video challenge idea! Would like to see an attempt counter if possible. And just some constructive criticism the clicking is a little loud. Not sure what you can do to fix that but great video idea man!

Hi mackowens! Thank you for the feedback. I definitely need to update the overlay now that more people are watching. Working on the click sounds. I changed to a controller which reduced the noise a little, but I need to invest in a dynamic microphone so it will better reject off-axis noises. Saving up right now, but hopefully in a month or so I'll get one!

Right off the bat, an issue arises: the level-up group. All the starters are in Medium Slow, which, because this is Game Freak we're talking about, is actually the FASTEST level-up group up until about level 30 (Don't @ me about Fluctuating, that group doesn't exist in Gen 2). Outside of the Pidgey line, all of today's are either in the Fast group, which somewhat penalizes them growth-wise, or the Medium Fast group, which pretty heavily penalizes them. That's going to damage their prospects for getting through this because they just won't be able to gain as many stats before Abe and Falkner. I was shocked Butterfree made it through under those conditions. But imagine if it was able to get those extra levels, it might be more reliable or at least need fewer confusion hits to make it through. Ledian was even more of a surprise, and kind of goes to show just what kind of power Confusion has even with the unreliability of it landing. (Ledyba, lacking this, I doubt even gets through Rival 1 with that atrocious attack stat.) Also, Ledian's special defense is irrelevant until Gym 7 - only Ice and Dragon are Special types. Beedrill doesn't surprise me, due to lacking Confusion as an option and getting only one level before the Spearow. Likewise, Ariados doesn't do nearly enough damage, and I don't think I could even have a prayer of managing until it learned Night Shade at level 17. Pidgeot gets the benefit of being Medium Slow, so it gets those extra levels. I think Pidgeot will be a menace in the early game of Gen 2, since it also has Gust for Bugsy's gym, and may handle itself better over time due to eventually getting a buffed Wing Attack and also eventually getting STAB Return. It might be significantly better at Gen 2 minimum battles than Gen 1! Pidgeotto and Pidgey both also get these benefits, maybe they might pull it off as well. Noctowl may have made it, but I don't think it's going to on 0 DVs. Raticate might have the same issue, though Furret may be fine with optimized play.

I agree with all of this. Status remains pretty OP early in Gen 2 when there are only a couple of Pokemon on enemy teams. It will become much less useful when we have fuller teams to try to land confusion and pray on. Level groups are pretty massive. I am really worried for slow level up Pokemon given the lower levels of random trainers and thus the lower total exp they will get before each Gym.

Yeah, a pot of these Pokemon just get wrecked by type disadvantage and slower level groups

Why would you use sand attack if you need it to miss one attack.... if you use sand attack... which makes them hit you an extra time because you used sand attack. The pidgy fight would have been much more consistent without using it at all. You actually took 1 extra hit you shouldn't have on your win attempt from the Pidgy fight then if you would have never used sand attack and the battle with pidgeotto was a net 0 because you used it. Using sand attack is only a positive if it can make the opponent miss twice.

The point is that you are significantly increasing the odds of a miss on subsequent attacks. The odds of two misses from a tackle Pokemon after a Sand Attack is greater than the odds of a single miss without a sand attack

The point that i was making was that you tried to use sand attack for a fight that was consistent without it. It actually caused you to take an extra hit because you used it by the pidgy. If you ever run a fight and think "if it only misses once I'd be fine" it turns into "if i use sand attack and it misses twice i'd be fine" Unless you need the pokemon to miss you 2 times after the sand attack it comes down to move selection more then the miss. Exceptions being moves like fury swipes or if it starts out the gate with its AI doing something like toxic then not doing it again. @@GSCPokemonChallenges

I always felt that Noctowl was more of a defensive counterpart to fearow than it is a counterpart to pidgeot, but it doesnt really matter too much. It's nice to see how these early game mons manage with minimum battles

How good is one tail whip here though? should rattata just be attacking?

So whenever I use status debuffs like Growl or Tail Whip, I am doing it on the basis that either it earns me an extra turn on average or that it creates a situation where a single Crit could potentially get me through where it otherwise couldn't. It's inexact because I don't use damage calculators for any of my runs. So sometimes I'm resetting and testing and a lot of those tests get cut out
