Spider-Man: Homecoming is a huge return to form for the character. What did Marvel Studios do to steer Spider-Man back on track? I tried to answer that question with a really long video about it!

Some constructive criticism. I find you overstate your views e.g. we get it - you hate the Amazing Spiderman films and love the other SM flims more. Why is it when you say something is an improvement you compare it to Amazing Spiderman being a "worse" example without explaining it so we understand more - that would be better than just stating your views. Your background music is awful - I'd rather just listen to your voice alone. You could add some of the films' soundtracks if you wanted to. I would suggest finding more ways of making your videos more entertaining to listen to. You are very thorough in explaining your thoughts which is what makes your videos really interesting and I like your intervals between you talking and your use of film scenes to emphasise your points

Same. The car scene made the stakes real to me as you could feel Peter's fear in his eyes, and their convo was so calm but so tense. But the rubble scene was *perfect.* I almost cried in the theatre with him, the fact that he's only a kid underneath the suit really hit hard. And I have claustrophobia too, so my anxiety doubled. Some other things I thought made it better: 1. Tom Holland being an amazing actor 2. Peter looking more like his age 3. Showing that bullies (flash) don’t always look scary 4. The thing with Tom Holland is that he actually is a NATURAL STORYTELLER, when he speak at interviews you can spot it: he creates suspense, uses silences, half-laugh before joke, use specific words to spike emotions or create empathy, and he does this naturally as his DRIVE N°1 (Downey Jr., Chris Evans or Chris Hemsworth don't use this as their expression N°1). So, in order to have "a kid talking with himself and the iron/computer all the time" (wich I agree on being great as a reflection of the "spiderman thoughts and selftalk" from the comics), you picked this guy who naturally does it in any sociable encounter he lives! So I think in Marvel there's a casting hand wich is specially skilled at the same level as their writers. This guy Holland was a perfect decision.
@Chatoyancify

I just think Tom Holland has managed to become a lot of people's favorite spider man mainly because he actually is like super talkative and funny and the movie doesn't take itself too seriously, similar vibe to the actual Spiderman comics, it makes you fall in love with Peter and he actually feels like the friendly neighborhood Spiderman in this one.

Well I know, Peter was shy in the comics too. But he was a quick thinker and he always had a sense of wit, and that all came out when he was Spider-Man- because he felt more confident as Spider-Man. Well considering you would have no MCU without the comics they might wanna stick a little closer to them. Spider-man is always, and I mean always portrayed as an unsure kid in every movie they have ever made about him. It's tiresome watching a kid trying to figure it all out over, and over. Yeah some acting might be better than others, however that doesn't hide the fact that they are all basically the same exact movie with the same plot. Kid gets powers doesn't know how to deal with that, and puberty at the same time, blah blah blah. Its the same fluff over and over. I want the real Spider-man. Not some silly kid who needs help all the time. For once I would like to see a movie with the real Spider-man. Experienced, confident, well versed in his own abilities and powers. The Spider-Man that can take on Venom, and Carnage at the same time, without any help. The Spider-Man that can defeat the Sinister Six on his own. I grow tired of the whole unsure silly kid act.

I also feel like Tom Holland was a fantastic choice for the role.he delivers the character in such a loveable way and instantly makes you love him. Even my mom, who hates Spiderman as a superhero (she says he's 'wimpy'), got emotional during the death scene in Infinity War because he did such a phenomenal job of portraying a terrified kid who knows they're dying and is absolutely powerless to stop it. Tom's iteration of Spiderman is by far my favorite and may even be my #1 in the MCU, which is saying something because I've always been a Tony Stark kind of girl. Yeah the way they did the twist was just too damn perfect. There's a happy song in the background, Peter just got the girl, it shows him doing lots of fun little things, preparing for the dance. Its a fun scene, then when he goes to her house and sees who opens the door, you just know that both you, and Peter and thinking, "oh..shit!" And the car scene is amazing, what makes scenes scary is that first someone has to be demonstrated to have power, then they have to be on the verge of finding something out which will result in him using that power on our hero. All we think is, does he know? Its a brilliant scene.

What people never mention is the suit was also an obstacle in itself: The "Training Wheels" lock make Peter Feel inadequate, he breaks it to try prove he can handle adult issues. But It causes more problems, he is overwhelmed with hi tech, an "Instant Kill" option, Karen's AI has an adult tone, Bare in mind Tony Stark created "Her" Because he is not trained in using the suit, he can't maximize it's potential, he does well at the monument but the ship? it's just too much. So when the suit is taken he depends on the things he was ignoring in the beginning, His friend Ned (guy in the chair), he calls Happy, even though he was ignored he still did that first, and finally he uses both his powers and his intelligence to solve problems.

I have to agree, I feel like if the suit wasn’t incredibly high tech Peter never would’ve been able to learn. Like, he hacks into the suit and he gets in trouble for it and it shows further that he’s still a kid. That’s exactly something a teenager would do, appalled that they weren’t trusted even though they have all this power and I think it puts in Uncle Ben’s “with great power comes great responsibility” quote without having to say it.
@ApexGale
@ApexGale 6 жыл бұрын
The suit was a crutch, Peter had forgotten what made him Spider-Man. He had forgotten that he was a Queens kid who was just trying to use his abilities to help out as best as he could and became too reliant on the suit as a core element of the hero he was. When Tony said "If you're nothing without the suit you shouldn't have it," he was being somewhat literal. If Peter is not Spider-Man without the suit, he should not have the suit to begin with. That's why it always irritates me when people say they don't like the hi-tech suit. The suit was an important part of Peter's character arc.

*mild spoilers, but nothing big if you watched the video already* One of my favorite parts was how, as mentioned earlier, a lot of the previous movies have Spider-Man in his best environment: downtown Manhattan, with tall buildings and lots of places to swing from. But here, they defy that: they constantly put him in the suburbs, on the Washington Monument, on a boat, on a _plane_, which are all places where he doesn't have as many places to swing from and is quite disadvantaged. And it _shows_ -- he as to try really hard to deal with his limitations and its great. None of the other movies ever really did that.

Obviously, it's a funny moment, but it's a nice way to make an audience think about such circumstances who wouldn't consider it otherwise.

I think there's one more element that made Homecoming a much better Spiderman film: the whole movie is specifically about bringing down the high-stakes, world-saving superhero movies, to a more individual, personal level. my interpretation of the rubble scene is a little diffrent. The other action sequences he always is getting a assist from Stark via him personally or the suit. stripping him of everything for his final battle gives him the oppurtuinity to prove he is "more then his suit". everyone criticized this to be iron man lite and in that moment iron man wasent gonna show up so he had to be his own man. He didnt just become Spiderman there but just simply a man. That final sequence made the movie a spiderman movie not a iron man lite flick.

I enjoyed this rendition of Spidey, because he was so believable as both Spidey AND Peter Parker. The latter is where so many movies were flawed in its execution of the character. Holland's Spidey/Parker is believable because of so many things... his anxiousness to be get out of school and throw on the suit, hiding his extra gear under a locker, and so much more. And, I like how he grows into the character. He's obviously immature, being only 15, but he shows great strength of character just as often, if not more so. Not to mention, the evolution of his character, and the maturation of his outlook as Spidey was so well delivered. I really can't wait to see a more of this character, and a more experienced Spider-Man in the sequels. Its only going to get better.

the scene when Toomes answered the door got the biggest reaction from me in the theater. because the first half second after he opens the door I was thinking "oh no, he's got Liz and her mom hostage." then I thought "wait, why's he dressed so casually? wait a second... NO! NO! THAT IS NOT HAPPENING! NO!" and I burst out in genuine laughter at the hilarious misfortune and coincidence of Peter's situation. his date's dad was the guy who for the past few days or weeks had been trying to kill him. that moment and the awkward pictures and uncomfortable car ride were my favorite parts of the movie. also, this movie doesn't feel the need to have the heroes' life perfect at the end. Peter loses the girl. Aunt May finds out he's spider-man. Peter isn't an avenger. and I think that's partially owed to the nature of Spider-man, he's a character who's life is always being struck by misfortune or bad luck, he's not like Superman or Iron Man who life seems to give a break to frequently, Peter has the luck of a nerdy high schooler, which is pretty terrible. the movie was able to capture Spider-man's essence well. also, this movie had the best easter eggs, connections, and references to the MCU at large. Iron Man was in much less of the movie than I expected. he was a presence felt not a person present in most of the story. Captain America's school PSAs were hilarious and showed the legacy and influence he had on american culture. all of the names dropped in the film, every named student is some sort of minor player in spider-man, Betty Brant, Ned Leeds, Flash Thompson, and the minor villains, the scorpion was set up. Aaron Davis as Miles Morales's uncle, confirming Miles's existence. the avengers masks on the bank robbers. I enjoyed this movie a lot.

Carl Deaton I always found Spiderman to be interesting cause of the bad luck. He isn't rich or taken care of like other superheroes. Other heroes are able to take the suit off and relax. @@scumbagbenis3015 I do understand that some aspects of Homecoming definitely took away from how relatable Peter Parker is, but I put that down to needing to make him fit into the universe. The suit was pretty well-explained in this video, and the mentoring deal set up Infinity War and Endgame nicely. The STEM school, I think, was just to explain how a teenager could build his own web-shooters. However, at the end of the day, the Parker luck is still there. He gets detention, can't even go on one date with Liz, gets his suit taken away, and then his aunt finds out he's Spiderman. @eaglefan2569

The other thing is it still makes the "lesser" scenes and crimes significant. You don't need alien abductions or crazy doctors to tell a good story; the entire conflict is literally a blue collar construction worker running a black market and stealing scraps from other fights, then using it as profit. There's no saving the world kind of deal; at best he just saves lives and a lot of equipment from being taken, and it's so grounded and refreshing. They didn't need big stakes events that a "neighborhood" hero needed to solve like the other two iterations; they pulled off the lesser stake events much better AND made it feel like it mattered, because it mattered to Peter. That, and I like that there's no killing the villain and a bunch of civilian casualties. There's not even any anger or indifference in Peter towards the possibility of Toomes dying in the explosion. Even though Toomes tried killing him NUMEROUS TIMES (and almost succeeded in many of them), Peter still refused to let Toomes die, which morally hits where comics Peter tends to land.

Marvel just seems to get how to make appealing characters that people want to spend time with again and again. People aren’t flocking to see the next Thor film for example because they can’t wait to see what Thor hits next with Mjolnir/Stormbreaker, they’re going because they genuinely care about the character and that’s true for almost every character in the exceptionally large cast (some truly are a bit bland but in such a huge cast that in itself is amazing enough). Seeing Endgame in cinemas here in the UK (where clapping and cheering in cinemas is not really a thing at all) it was wonderful to see how invested people truly are in their beloved heroes. It seems to be why other studios just can’t get a functional cinematic universe started. They think people want to see one movie that will connect to another movie but we don’t, we want to love characters the way we love the MCU characters. Endgame spoilers ahead: People literally cheered at the return of Black Panther and Spider-Man on both occasions that I saw endgame. They weren’t even doing anything, people were just so pleased to see them return because Marvel has crafted characters that people really respond to. It’s incredible work.

As a guy who grew up watching Spider-Man be "The Hero" in the Trilogy, Spider-Man Animated Series, Spectacular Spider-Man it was hard watching Homecoming, it felt like he was held back bc of being part of the MCU. But after watching Into The Spiderverse, I finally accepted that this was a very different Spiderman.

Joe Santos that cry made the scene one of my favorites. It was perfect for Spider man being humanized as Peter (erasing the difference between them to Peter himself). My second favorite scene was when Peter found out that Liz was the daughter of his first major villain. That pause, his nervousness, and fear was perfect.

DC and Marvel are seperate franchises, yes they both are based on the original comics and about superheores saving the world. But they cover different aspects etc, so it's good he didn't compare as they are completely different. It's like saying if he was talking about Star Wars, he'd have to contrast it to Star Trek? A lot of people compare and fight over if DC or Marvel is better :c when they are both equally good in their own right.

My name is Irrelevant No need for hostility. If you're gonna hate the DCEU, hate the production company (Warner Bros.) instead. They completely fucked it over by rushing the films and not giving a shit about the fans in general, unlike Disney with Marvel. Had the films been paced better, DCEU could've been on par with MCU in a few years after a few solo movies.

Also I feel like his bad luck is kinda forced waaaaay too much unless plot demands it, however I do know he has bad luck but not THIS much. Don't get me wrong I am a fan of the original trilogy (I grew up with it) but Spider-Man is only serious when it demands it and Homecoming proved it (the original Spider-Man only made a handful of jokes and some weren't all that funny, more like cute and awkward). Spider-Man is always a jokester even in combat. Holland nailed both being an awkward pleaser to his mentors and joking around as Spider-Man. HE FUCKING PLAYED AROUND WITH THANOS OF ALL PEOPLE!!!!!

I think what's make it enjoyable is the fact that we can see the character mature. he's a kid who wants to be a hero and in his world being an avenger means he's being recognize as one, ofc he tries so hard to impress tony. and no, he doesn't depend on his suit as u can see in the movie, whenever he tries to use the high tech, it's always end up in disaster and he go back to basic

I feel like they made Spideys new suit have the AI for a few reasons. 1. He's taken under Tony Starks wing so it makes sense that he is given an advanced suit considering Tony has the most high tech suits on earth. 2. It gives us the opportunity to understand his thought process and how he feels inside without monologuing like in the Raimi trilogy. Hes able to speak to the AI and give his thoughts about his current situation as well as vent out any sort of moral dilemmas like revealing his identity. 3. It's something fresh and new in the Spider-Man universe, they're trying new things with his character which is good.

Mr. Aziz I get why they did it though. Spider-Man was really overrated by the time Civil War and Homecoming came round and they thought the General audience probably wouldn’t want as much drama as the previous movies especially drama and themes we’ve seen multiple times in both Spider-Man and the amazing Spider-Man films and they were probably right. I mean many elements are missing because they had been done. Swinging through the city, Spider-sense, etc. besides Spider-Man is still young and has like two more movies to go I’m sure there will be more dramatic weight in future movies.

I liked the idea, and I think it does help the story, but it could've been a little less powerfull. Sure, there were some funny scenes with "wich one of the 999+ modes would you like", but it just doesn't need to be so strong. Spiderman is agile, clever and creative, a tad less tech-based abilities would've been better.

6:54 you have a very very good point. i love how Homecoming was not a huge beam of light made up of some earth shattering disease or toxin into the sky, but instead just Spider-Man stopping the vulture from stealing, because its the right thing to do. and its amazing. it truly defines what makes Peter Parker, (the REAL Spider-Man) Spider-Man. it shows us that even in overwhelming odds, and a crime that is almost entirely pathetic compared to loki trying to take over earth, and its great. its really really awesome how small of a scale this movie has. there are definitely some big moments that are in the public eye, but overall its just Peter trying to do the right thing, and its beautiful really.

@Lhikan634
@Lhikan634 6 жыл бұрын
@robert oliver Remember, this isn't really the beginning of Spider-Man's adventures in the MCU. He already had his powers before Civil War so has gone through a certain amount of the responsibility thing off-screen. One main reason for Stark is for the Iron Spider suit from the comics, which Petey will need for Infinity War. Spidey was needed for Civil War, so he was rushed in and made to fit where the MCU is now. Plus, a major point of the movie was that Peter had to earn the suit due to making mistakes (the kind Tony saw had resulted in the Sokovia Accords and the Avengers' Civil War).
@journeyofjosh
@journeyofjosh 5 жыл бұрын
i would say that the A.I. suit is my biggest complaint, but i wouldn't even call it a complaint. it's just like, ehhh reallyy?? but in the context of a hollywood movie, it's fine because movie versions always go over the top, AND i think it solved more issues than it created. for example, in previous spidey movies, how does he get such a nice looking costume if he presumably made it himself? this is totally solved by having tony stark gift spidey a nice techy suit. cuz the one he made himself charmingly looks like shit and the a.i. one looks like how we would think a spidey suit would look. plus the "iron spider" suit in avengeres looks siiiiickkkkk
@yarsftks
@yarsftks 5 жыл бұрын
I can't seem to find the problem with the suit. It might be the simple fact that i watched "Ultimate Spiderman" on DisneyXD, where he's really techie, i mean, spider-buggie? He embodies every aspect of spiderman and all its various. Kinda like a Spidey crash course for noobs like me. So this clip talks about how they miss his self-talking aspect from previous movies and use the AI in the suit to explain that, i doubt its a problem. I mean, the Deadpool movie didn't seem to have that problem, nor the eyes moving problem, and the everyday, mundane parts of life. (That unicorn had it coming). So they could have Spiderman talking to the camera and break the 4th wall like in Deadpool, but even the cartoon version didn't shy away from the fact that there are parts of Spiderman that aren't known and they did a good job in bringing as much of the character from the comics to the show as possible. They knew they couldn't address everything. They skipped the spiderbite and the old, helpless aunt May by making her a hip, cool and healthy version of her so that they can focus on other parts and while they mention uncle Ben, they rarely came across the fact that he was shot and focused more on the legacy. Even without the mask, hes the Spiderman we all see in ourselves and want to be. I want to be a Tom Holland too.

What I like about Spidey in the MCU is that we're shown how he got his upgraded suit. He's poor and has no means to create it himself, and Tony giving it to him is a perfect explanation for him having it. We see how he gets in and out of his suit and where he leaves his clothes. This is in contrast to the OG Spideys where it's never really explained. Okay we see Peter draw his suit in his room, but we don't actually know where or how he got the fabric etc. to actually create it. Also we see that he wears his suit under his clothes, which is fine, but we don't see where he leaves his clothes and gets back into them. This is a nitpick on the OG movies, that are great for the rest (except 3). I'm just glad they show in Homecoming how it works 'behind the scenes' of being Spidey.

@Sidney J. Duffy it does look expensive, but in it's defense it was one of the first seriously good super hero films. It's what started super hero films being good

@@dwightshrute17 No, i think what started good superheroes movies was Tim Burton's Batman

Good point...especially since financial problems is such a big part of Peter Parker's story, including the MCU version...even highlighted in like, the third line Peter has in the MCU (I'm referring to his first scene ever, in Civil War - which I just happened to rewatch last night lol - when Peter immediately asks if the "grant" Tony Stark is lying about involves getting money. Then, when the convo moves to his tiny bedroom, they immediately establish he salvages all his tech from the dumpsters, etc.). And honestly? They did a really good job making his original costume that Peter created by himself look like something that could be made by hand, at home. As someone with experience poorly sewing clothing & costumes at home, without a sewing machine or patterns, just focused on basic function over actually looking nice...I'm pretty sure I could recreate Peter's OG costume on my own. I could even do it by using scraps and stuff I find, if I'm allowed to focus on recreating its function over a specific appearance, like how Peter would have made it. But, I prefer his fancy suit, mainly because of the eye movement, and I'm so glad they have a great reason for how he has it. I don't see how they could justify Peter being able to make a suit any more advanced than the OG cobbled together one. Especially considering that during Civil War & Homecoming, Peter Parker had yet to start working as far as I remember...So he literally has no money of his own. If he managed to find even something as basic & necessary like a good working sewing machine while dumpster diving, it wasn't shown or established. And when it comes to the costumes in all prior Spiderman movies, it's obvious a high quality sewing machine was used, using high quality materials, following a specific pattern. (My mom is actually good at sewing, has a machine & the money for materials & patterns, and I've watched her create all kinds of costumes using these resources, including the shopping part & pattern part. She could definitely create the basic Spider Man costumes used in the prior movies, but I definitely couldn't without accessing her resources...And I have far more experience & time than Peter Parker does.) And if Aunt May has a sewing machine during this time, they also didn't establish that...not to mention that it takes experience & skill to use a sewing machine well, and it takes even more experience & skill to use it secretly, without leaving behind at least some evidence that it's been used for a different project. _(ie. If I tried to sneakily use my mom's sewing machine when she wasn't home, it would be hard to leave no trace of it. Especially if she was in the middle of a different project.)_ Sorry for the unnecessary ramble 😅✌

Dude, I had to subscribe after this awesome video. Mad props, bro! Bonus points for sounding almost exactly like Tobey Maguire! I almost expected you to end it with "Who am I? I'm Spider-Man!"

Love this video! Your points are great and I agree with pretty much all of them! I don't know, when people complain about it being "Iron Man Lite", I always just kind of think... well, yeah! He's *fifteen*. That's a freshman in high school, for god's sake. He's not exactly ready to jump directly into battle like the adults are. Just because he gained powers doesn't mean he's automatically going to be the ultimate superhero. He kind of needs some assistance from someone older and who's had more experience. Honestly, Tony Stark would not have been my first choice for that job but he's such a father figure for Peter that it works so well. So yeah, of course Spider-Man would have an AI, and all those fancy add ons in the suit- Tony knows what works for him, and what will work for Peter once he teaches him how to use it. The training wheels protocol? Understandable- Tony wants to let Peter master what he already knows before diving into all of the new features. Of course Peter kind of screws that up, so Tony forces him to go back to basics to understand that he never needed all of the fancy gadgets and suit features- sticking with what he knows is good enough. Sorry for the ramble haha, just my two cents.

To be fair, Raimi’s Peter talks to himself VERY often, particularly in Spider-Man 2
