@dvcz96

As a Auto Technician, I can say this is accurate, but only for those shops that are in desperate need of serious income. That's how some shops get sleezy, money ain't coming in as much as they need so they "find" problems to drain more money out of you. Good mechanics will tell you what's up, and what they see but won't charge you, just simply give you a heads up. Now if they see something serious that can cause an accident in the future, its our job to make sure the costumer is safe. Other than that watch out for sneaky "finders"

@@ericyoung2136 what the f*** are you serious? That's a pretty dumb s***. I seriously hope you're just joking because if you don't understand how bad that is on your car even if it looks like new oil then you definitely shouldn't be working on your own car or anybody else's for that matter

That's where KZbin has become my best friend. I can't physically work on a car, but I've been able to do some tinkering and find the cause of issues thanks to the videos here. I buy the parts myself and instruct a mechanic who's been working for thirty years to install the parts for me. Sadly, the guy I used to have working on my car has now retired...I think I was his last job. But he made me feel proud for praising me with correctly diagnosing the car myself the last time I brought my old car in. I did, however, get a mixture of men watching me work on the car and come over to share a word. One was an older neighbor who kindly leant me a tool or two and a ragged towel for my hands so I didn't have to dirty the towels in the house. May he rest in peace. Some were impressed to see a woman working on her own vehicle, but one guy joked that KZbin was taking business away from him. I joked with him back, but on the inside, I was cheering 😂

The percentage of mechanics out there like this is very small. Most mechanics are honest because there's not much reason to be otherwise. There are always plenty of cars to work on. There's millions and millions of cars on the road and all of them always need worked on. It's the ones that do bad work that need to do this. Because their reputation gets around and they don't get that much business because of the lousy work they do. The shops that do good work don't have to do this because their reputation gets around too and they get plenty of business because they do good work. So with lots of cars being on the road and needing work there's no reason to do anything other than good honest work.

His attitude was intimidating, rude, and scary as a single woman, but he was a good mechanic, always busy, knew his stuff and he didn’t charge for simple stuff. Even though he was scary to me and not friendly, he didn’t take advantage of single moms. Unfortunately, I think he closed after the pandemic. People like that are hard to find.

This is far more accurate than it should be. Even the "honest" shops are full of thieves who steal from their customers through incompetence or lack of concern. I sometimes watch episodes of a show made in Canada called Marketplace, I think. They do some great exposé's on shady companies and practices in Canada, even local businesses, ranging from a notorious place that doesn't change the oil and fakes additional issues, to doctors and therapists at a particular office operating from fake online degrees (but teaching to be wary of other places who are doing the same). Usually these sort of things are only local news here in America instead of being blasted nationally so that everyone will know. It also forces the hand of a lot of companies to get better or shut down. The closest I can think of with America is the old show American Greed and that's usually white collar crime that only targets investors and whatnot, and don't expose something happening right at the moment but instead, they're events in the past. That doesn't help your average citizen.

yeah...once a local shop told me that I needed an entirely new oil pan because the screw threads were torn I knew I couldn't trust them any longer. I mean, there has to be a way to redo that or rig it up somehow. They're the ones that may have destroyed the threads in the first place.

Have to drill it out then retap it and then use a bigger bolt. So probably not great to just "rig" it

@@Hyperbolic_G- correct, as a machinist I could have it done for you in about 10 mins 👍🏻

@@Hyperbolic_G great - better than replacing the whole damn thing. I wish they suggested something like this rather than an unnecessary cash bomb repair.

I recall reading once that a mechanic charged someone to replace the "Fall Air" in the tire with the "Spring Air" in the tire.

Kay you can dam near do the similar type of video for air conditioning companies training new techs. Air quality, if the unit is over 12 years old, flip it lol. Repair vs replace, planned service agreement, free “water heater inspection “ Love the sense of humor and creativity fam 💯💪🏾

Thankfully, times have changed... a little. Most places don't do this anymore and can be trusted, but I remember about 25-30 years ago, our next-door neighbor lady...very elderly, had a really nice Cadillac. She was always going to the stealership because something always needed "repair". New brakes with less than 10k miles on them, radiator flush, transmission flush, power steering service...we knew she was being scammed, but she trusted them. Still, it's good to have a private mechanic who is trusted. My family has been using the same mechanic for 25 years. And before him, it was his dad.
