As a Auto Technician, I can say this is accurate, but only for those shops that are in desperate need of serious income. That's how some shops get sleezy, money ain't coming in as much as they need so they "find" problems to drain more money out of you. Good mechanics will tell you what's up, and what they see but won't charge you, just simply give you a heads up. Now if they see something serious that can cause an accident in the future, its our job to make sure the costumer is safe. Other than that watch out for sneaky "finders"

That's where KZbin has become my best friend. I can't physically work on a car, but I've been able to do some tinkering and find the cause of issues thanks to the videos here. I buy the parts myself and instruct a mechanic who's been working for thirty years to install the parts for me. Sadly, the guy I used to have working on my car has now retired...I think I was his last job. But he made me feel proud for praising me with correctly diagnosing the car myself the last time I brought my old car in. I did, however, get a mixture of men watching me work on the car and come over to share a word. One was an older neighbor who kindly leant me a tool or two and a ragged towel for my hands so I didn't have to dirty the towels in the house. May he rest in peace. Some were impressed to see a woman working on her own vehicle, but one guy joked that KZbin was taking business away from him. I joked with him back, but on the inside, I was cheering 😂

The percentage of mechanics out there like this is very small. Most mechanics are honest because there's not much reason to be otherwise. There are always plenty of cars to work on. There's millions and millions of cars on the road and all of them always need worked on. It's the ones that do bad work that need to do this. Because their reputation gets around and they don't get that much business because of the lousy work they do. The shops that do good work don't have to do this because their reputation gets around too and they get plenty of business because they do good work. So with lots of cars being on the road and needing work there's no reason to do anything other than good honest work.

I sometimes watch episodes of a show made in Canada called Marketplace, I think. They do some great exposé's on shady companies and practices in Canada, even local businesses, ranging from a notorious place that doesn't change the oil and fakes additional issues, to doctors and therapists at a particular office operating from fake online degrees (but teaching to be wary of other places who are doing the same). Usually these sort of things are only local news here in America instead of being blasted nationally so that everyone will know. It also forces the hand of a lot of companies to get better or shut down. The closest I can think of with America is the old show American Greed and that's usually white collar crime that only targets investors and whatnot, and don't expose something happening right at the moment but instead, they're events in the past. That doesn't help your average citizen.
