Hey, y'all!! Thanks for the feedback on this video. This was one of my favs to make and I wanna keep doing this series. I do wanna address a few things as well: CORRECTIONS/ELABORATIONS: -I said in the video that Kojima worked on Metal Gear Solid until he was "forced not to." A lot of people are saying this is inaccurate as it's more like he was forced to work on Metal Gear Solid constantly, even though he didn't want to, until he was kicked out of the company. This isn't really a "mistake" as I am 100% aware of that and was planning on (potentially) bringing that up in later MGS videos. Basically, I never said that he *wanted* to only work on Metal Gear, I just said that he did. The point was that I wanted to show how impressive it was that Kojima made an auteur-level name for himself while only having one franchise under his belt. -"Deep Throat" was historically the name of a real life 70's secret informant who leaked information, leading to the Watergate scandal. I can't believe I missed that and didn't know that until now. I guess I didn't pay attention in history class LOL. Now I know what Kojima meant by that!! -"Aren't MG1 and 2 canon?" I could be wrong on this since it's been a hot minute since I played them, but from what I remember specifically, Big Boss does NOT reveal to Snake that he's his father, which is a crucial point to MGS1 and the entire series. That's what I was primarily talking about. I could be wrong on that, though, since it's been a while. -"What is that 🔥🔥🔥 FIRE 🔥🔥🔥 Metal Gear beat at the beginning?!??" Oh, that was made by me :) There are probably plenty of other things I got wrong. I'm just one guy making most of these videos, after all. This video took WAY too long to make!! I actually had to cut an entire segment about ports and The Twin Snakes out, AND I forgot to include a part about the alternate ending! GRAAAHH!! But either way, thanks so much! This is one of the few positive reviews I made that's actually doing quite well, which makes me so, so, SOOO happy. You guys are fucking awesome!! I got a few other videos to do first, but an MGS2 video is on the way!!

as far as canon goes, you have to take each metal gear game as sort of its' own thing. Like you said, there is no "Snake, I am your father" moment in MG2, despite Campbell and Snake mentioning it in MGS. There's also a strong argument that MGS2 was mostly or entirely a VR simulation, and at the very least it's supposed to be unclear what's real and what isn't, but that interpretation doesn't gel at all with MGS4. MGSV basically doesn't fit with any of the other games even remotely. That's why I always tell people to avoid playing the games in chronological order, go with release order instead. It's not a long story that forms some grand epic, it's a series of one-off stories that are thematically and narratively connected, but don't have a strict continuity. Each new entry ignores or follows up on whatever plot threads were useful for the story they wanted to tell, but they're never married to a concept or plot point. I also don't think Kojima deserves so much credit for the games he's worked on. He does a lot, but he's not a level designer, or a programmer, or even the only writer! There's plenty of behind the scenes story that demonstrate the rest of the team having plenty of say in what they were making. Oh and while he went to film school briefly, Kojima was ultimately trying to be a novelist, not a filmmaker.

It revealed to everyone how the M1911 is the greatest handgun since the Colt SAA. First of all, the feeding ramp is polished to a mirror sheen. It’s not going to have any feeding problems. The slide’s been replaced with a reinforced version, and it meshes perfectly with the frame. The frame itself has been iron-welded and scraped down multiple times for maximum precision. The front strap part of the frame has been checkered to make it dig into the hand. That prevents any slipping. The sight system’s original too. It’s a 3-dot type. It’s got an enlarged front sight, giving it superior target sighting capability. The regular hammer’s been replaced with a ring hammer. That enhances the cocking control and increases the hammer-down speed. They also reworked the grip safety to accommodate the ring hammer. It looks like they eliminated it altogether. This is a tool for pros. The thumb safety and slide stop are extended for precise handling. The base of the trigger guard is whittled down so you can use a high grip, and the trigger itself is a long type for easy finger access. The trigger pull is about 3.5 pounds. that’s about a pound and a half lighter than normal. The magazine well has been widened to make it easier to put in a new magazine. The magazine catch button has been filed down low to make it harder to hit it by mistake. The mainspring housing has been changed to a flat type to increase grip, and it’s even been fitted with stepping so that it won’t slip from the recoil when firing. On top of that, they added cocking serrations to the top part of the slide. That lets you load and eject cartridges faster in an emergency. Whoever did this is a professional, no question. This thing could shoot a one-hole at 25 yards in a machine rest.

In general kojima is mediocre to terrible when given complete creative freedom and created his best work when he has people who can veto some of his decisions. Pretty similar to the George Lucas situation with the originals vs the prequels. Mgs means a lot to me too and its great that you're bringing it to light for more people. One little note tho, one of my favorite aspects of mgs1 is how the game just carries on even if you fail the torture (you can submit to it, which i did in my first play bc i didnt know you could survive it) and honestly, i think this "bad" ending reinforces the message that encourages you to keep living, not that i feel good or didnt care about failing Meryl like that, but for such an old game its interesting how it doesnt hold that against you (too) much, you're *allowed and encouraged* to keep living and carry on. I dont think i ever felt more impacted by a game before that... A really great video btw! Feels nice to revisit this story after so long.

I do think it's worth noting that, though the MSX games may have been retconned to an extent, some version of the events depicted in those games still happen in the metal gear timeline. Spoilers for the MSX games Gray Fox isn't just "a man snake has fought with in war," he was a highly decorated soldier, with his codename even being the highest honor obtainable in the foxhound unit. In the events of Metal Gear 1, Snake rescues gray Fox after a failed attempt at infiltrating outer heaven, and over the course of metal gear 2, he acts as basically a double agent, very similar to his actions in MGS 1, in fact, at this point working for big boss because he's felt his place was only ever on the battle field, and following big boss more or less assures gray fox that he'll always be on one, despite him not being completely on board with big boss's ideals. Eventually, Snake and Fox confront one another and fight, Snake mortally wounding gray Fox in the process, where he confesses to being Snake's "number one fan" (the MG2 equivalent of "deepthroat" here). This leads into his revival through the use of an exoskeleton and the rest is history. And it doesn't end with gray Fox either, master Miller was also snake's combat advisor in metal gear 2, making the ultimate revelation that he was killed and swapped out with liquid snake all the more shocking to those who have played the prior titles. All this to say that the MSX games, even if they're older, more tame, and don't quite have the same rich themes of MGS 1 onwards, they are still worth experiencing and are essential parts of the full narrative of metal gear. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk, absolutely wonderful video.

Much more humane. 54:25 Stealth weapon in the sense that it fires nuclear missiles without fuel, using a rail gun, making them undetectable. It also circumvents international treaties because it's "missiles" aren't technically missiles since they have no fuel. Great review. The meme filled editing is personally not my cup of tea but still was very insightful. Especially to someone who perhaps never touched a Metal Gear game. Just have a couple nitpicks. There is quite a bit of backtracking, which is rather standard design for the 90s. While I do agree that the backtracking for the PAL card was rather annoying, I feel that the one for the PSG1 is actually great design. It adds to the urgency of the situation because you have Meryl bleeding to death and you can't do anything without a sniper rifle. Finally, the Alert sequence in the Communication Tower I feel is an interesting break in the typical gameplay loop that just envolves avoiding combat and here it forces you to be on the offensive. MGS is probably my favourite game in the series after MGS2 and I still boot up my PS1 from time to time just to play it.

You literally posted this at the most perfect time. I just bought the master collection this week and I’m almost finished with MGS1; I’ve only ever played MGSV and Revengance so I’m honestly surprised how well this game has aged, can’t wait to finish it tonight

My only regret making the codec sound my text message notification sound, is that I must check my phone like 50 times before my brain acceptS that I was watching a KZbin doc. So of course while watching this, I missed the real texts from my supervisor asking why I didn't make our team zoom meeting. Deepthroat was named after the snitch in the Watergate case.

it would’ve been funny if Dumbsville did a Metal Gear Awesome reference but overall this Video is 10/10

Brother. I’m a huge MGS fan. I’ve played every game and I watch KZbin videos constantly. Like it’s great to play this and go about my day doing chores or whatever. For someone who’s heard this story easily 100 times. I was crying and laughing at the way you edit and spoke about this.😂😂😂. Great work.

Nice vid Dumbsy. I was first introduced to the Metal Gear Solid series through the 3DS port of MGS 3, and got hooked. The story was great with many tropes involved with film, such as the Bond franchise. While I was more familiar with the stealth games such as the Splinter Cell games, MGS was clearly the better experience for me personally. Possibly my favourite franchise from Konami.

Honestly I love the meta ludology of the game It sucks to backtrack It also sucks to leave your partner behind instead of taking the sniper bait You feel what snake feels It sucks to have to button mash It sucks to be tortured It’s nice to have something vibrate on your arm So it happens to you and snake You feel what snake feels

22:02 I know you could have intentionally missed this for memes but, deepthroat was a code name for an informant from water gate scandal. (snake references this on this very cutscene)
@mrreyes50043 ай бұрын
It's so odd to think that there was a time when action games _weren't_ expected to have some kind of deep story. But Metal Gear Solid's frequent fourth-wall breaks, on top of being comedic, also ironically do strengthen the idea that the real-life player is involved in the story just as much as Snake, Otacon and Meryl. When Liquid calls out Solid for enjoying the thrill of killing, he's ALSO calling out the player for taking pleasure in killing enemies (even if simulated ones). It's the kind of deep deconstruction that really wouldn't be followed up until Far Cry 3 and Hotline Miami.
