Shout out to Tommy Mottola for threatening to pull all of its artists from MTV if they didn't play MJ's videos

I’ve read the then president of CBS records, Walter Yetnikoff, threatened to go public when MTV initially refused to air Billie Jean.

As someone who worked there for a spell and grew up in the music video age I will agree with every aspect of this…

I dont consider the 90's the fall of Mtv, just because of "non music additions". Because music was still a focus, and spring break, Beavus & Butthead, etc. still added to the overall culture. It wasn't until early 2002ish, where the start of the decline actually started.., especially with more focus on "reality" shows.

White Zombie owes a lot of their popularity to Beavis and Butthead. The show also had other metal bands like Pantera, Napalm Death, Carcass, Death, Suicidal Tendencies, Death, Morbid Angel, Entombed, and Type O Negative. I don't see any shows made today using that sort of music

I watched Mtv as a kid almost from the start. We had satellite back in them days, and I remember them early years before they started with the shows, and it was videos and performances. Ps. Rio was done by Duran Duran.

You gotta laugh when you use Zoomers wearing MTV or Nirvana t-shirts, but they don't even know who Kurt Cobain is.

Yeah they could've easily extended their run for another decade alongside with VH1 but management being management of course

MTV used to be cool now it is just a boring channel. At least I got to watch Jackass. :)

one of my favorite things to do as a teenager in the 90's, besides playing GTA: Vice City, was listening to music videos on MTV, i liked shows like Beavis and Butthead and Daria well enough, but certainly with the rise of shows like the Osbournes and Next etc. i stopped caring as much and eventually stopped watching altogether

The thing I would add here is this channel from the back half of the 80's to right around 1998 had some pretty legendary focus shows regarding mucic. 120 Minutes, Headbangers Ball, Yo MTV Raps and AMP were all just...I don't even know how to describe it. It was like, you had your popular stuff running during the day and then the specialty shows would open up an entire other ecosystem of music that you would never hear unless you were constantly diving into bins at the local record store (yes, they had actual record stores..with records along side tapes and CD's) and could have an owner of one get you access to rarified distribution networks.

What became the nail in the coffin for Mtv was the reality shows like 16 and Pregnant among others. A once very good channel eventually became a shell of it's former self all the way to a walking yet rotting corpse that doesn't know when it's time to die.

I only watched MTV for it's animated shows. Beavis and Butt-head and Celebrity Deathmatch were my first MTV animated shows I've watched. It would not be until 2011 I watched other animated shows like The Maxx, Downtown, Æon Flux (I have yet to watch The Head in its entirety). After I moved on from Beavis and Butt-head (until I started watching it again in 2022), I started watching which became my favorite MTV animated series Daria (mainly because there are some hot babes to look at, including my cartoon crush and now my wife Jane Lane).

In the late 80’s and early 90,s they would air music related shows like the monkees from the 60’s while Nickelodeon was also airing the show but the focus was making the shows music related cause even bevis and butt-head was music related due to the fact they would roast music videos in between the episode’s segments the mid to late 90’s is there they started to get more off topic with shows like singled Daria for example not really being music related except for the end credits song on each episode of Daria as the 2000,s went on u could see the m in MTV becoming more and more meaningless with the rise in reality shows they would produce like the one Carmen Electra had the one Jessica Simpson had with her husband at the time nick lachey the gave us the infamous chick of the sea tuna scene the Osborns show and run’s house about Rev. Run from run dmc’s life to now it should be retitled ridiculousness tv due to the amount of airtime the show gets granted it’s the best show they have had in many years and also thry have started moving over shows from their sister network vh1 and it’s third channel MTV classic was a bust cause it could have been something good but not much on it was good and barely went into the 90’s and I say barely cause Daria started in the late 90’s it could have been a channel for people like me who was born during the early years of MTV who were to young to really remember that time in the channels history
