I do a lot of depreciation analyses on my channel and also did one for the 720s. To be honest, the depreciation is steep at around EUR 23k per year. It is, however, flattening and I think that prices will bottom. Having said that, EUR 23k (about 20% of its new price) is a normal depreciation rate when compared with 'ordinary cars'. The problem arises when you start to compare it to its most important peers (porsche and ferrari). These are mostly depreciating less than 20% in their first year. Like TGE also mentions in the video, this is because these brands are controlling the lifecycles and production numbers. On the contrary, brands like audi (R8) and Lamborghini (Huracan) are managing their production similar to Mclaren and, as a result, also depreciate around 20% in their first year. I guess brands will do a cost-benefit analysis to figure out which route to go. For a brand as Mclaren to which supercars are the bread and butter of their business, I would expect a more long term view to create loyal customers.

I am McLaren Owner and only can give you my experience, first of all I am not going to say that some owners haven’t had issues with there cars, it’s obvious there have been problems. McLaren are a new brand compared to the other established brands , Ferrari, Porsche etc, they have come along way in 10 years, yes mistakes have been made. However my car has been faultless , no issues at all. They are an incredible car to drive and offer a full on super car experience. Finally let’s not forget Porsche GT3 Gen 1 engine issues, all of these had to be replaced , Ferrari 458 also started to catch fire, my Bentley had loads of issues with failing coil packs. The McLaren owners club are working with McLaren giving loads of feed back both negative and positive. I am confident McLaren will continue to improve all aspects of ownership. Finally hasn’t Archie’s plastic rear windscreen in his GT3 RS started popping out ? 😳 Maybe Porsche are using the wrong glue 😂

Can’t get around the fact that this is pretty much hypercar performance for supercar money! They look amazing - easily a match for long established supercar brands like Ferrari & Lamborghini. Obviously they’re had teething issues, & they were changing the designs way too much initially, but whatever - stunning cars!

I own a 675LT spider and 720s among other cars from Porsche and Ferrari and I absolutely love my Mclarens. I’ve had zero issues outside of a tonneau cover adjustment on the LT. Not sure if your problems with the dealers is a UK issue or not but here in the United States my experience with them has been fantastic. I will say their depreciation is horrific but I believe some of that has to do with the 12C/650s debacle with people thinking the 650s was a new model rather than a refresh. Hopefully that’ll all get sorted out in time. In terms of the cars themselves, right now I believe they are head and shoulders above Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, et al in terms of performance and feel....especially their LT series.

Valid points, the key not working would be more acceptable on something like my second car which was a 2007 Clio 197cup but not a £250k McLaren. Just disappointing really.
@SpeedingTube5 жыл бұрын
Some very valid points, I also believe McLaren are more exposed to a UK downturn as the brand doesn't have the same rich old money demographic as Porsche and Ferrari. For high income guys, expensive toys are the first things to go when income drops and McLaren have released more new models during this volatile UK economic window than any of the other luxury brands. London house prices, UK GDP, Sterling weakness...all of these things scare new money. McLaren need to focus less on spin off models and more on the luxury owner experience. The £10k lost key scenario is exactly the kind of experience that people with choice won't tolerate for very long.

I hear there hell when it comes time to warranty and if you do anything to the car it voids the warranty

The reliability issues are legit, especially for the 720S. Just look amongst the KZbinrs alone, there are TGE TV, MoreThanCars and Anishvin, all of whom had massive issues with the car. To make things even worse, McLaren has been absolutely appalling in dealing with such cases. And when you add on top of that the ridiculous depreciation rate, forget about it, is just not worth the pain. Having said that, if I am not wrong, all of the 3 cases above had early launch cars, may be the newer cars have better build quality perhaps? As for the fire issue, that I don't know what to say especially when it happens to such a higher end car like the Senna. For me, I have never liked McLaren anyway, so it doesn't really affect me. But, I can see how it can be a big problem for the fans of the brand.

Seemed fair, McLaren will hate it still, but good to see that you didnt take the (easy) opportunity to slag off the car and brand

McLaren make great cars, customer service and reliability let them down

I think a lot of early adopters maybe expected their McLarens to be McLaren F1 quality and prestige, that was an entirety different company to the modern McLaren Automotive and that was never going to be the case. I think what you said about them churning was spot on, they just throw together cars which are technically brilliant but seriously lacking in build quality and then to make matters worse, they are hugely expensive to fix. Even worse again is from what I can gather they practically disown their older cars and virtually recommend people get rid of them and replace them with a new McLaren, well I’m sorry, these are ridiculously expensive cars not mobile phones. I don’t think they will survive with their business model and that seems to be the case now, no proper car guys want them and they don’t have anything from their recent history that will become a classic so they will die!

Oddly, in Australia, the 488 is _typically_ cheaper than the 720S (year, km, spec dependant). There is only one McLaren dealer in Sydney, so if you don't get along with the dealer... you're screwed. Mind, Ferrari only has two dealers in Sydney. Given the local market, and the 7 years of free service from Ferrari... I'd have a 488.

People are spending a wedge on these McLaren's and there catching fire and having other problems!!! Totally not acceptable and it's been refreshing your honesty lad 👍👍!

I want them to turn themselves around, it’s like they made the mp4-12c and everyone went mad then they built and built, they have so much history and heritage I want them to stop building and take a couple of years out, sort the issues and actually deal with the problems. Then come back with something. But who knows what will happen

TGE do you think that a certain popular carvloger who has a certain fetish for blue cars has had such a good experience with the brand, as he seems to make it Look?

Being one of the top influencers in the car world, I doubt very much he has the same problems getting them to fix his broken McLarens as some poor chap who has broken the bank to to buy a 570s, in fact it’s a little bit sickening how he goes on about how much he loves them and how great they are, sounds more like sponsorship to me. There are many problems with them but the biggest seems to be their lack of respect for their average customer!

@@onkouth I think you might be right. He seems to be like a living advertisement for them, and in exchange, they offer him limited production models.

McLaren has to do four things: First) Make cars to order. Do not make any car that is not ordered and specified by the customer. Second) Make perfect cars. Period. Zero flaws. If Porsche by Singer can do it, McLaren can too. Third) Offer a 5 year fully-transferable bumper-to-bumper warranty to shore up resale value. If a car breaks in the middle of nowhere McLaren better fly in on a helicopter and fix the car with zero cost to the customer. It's the only way McLaren is going to rescue their reputation. Fourth) Be professional. Be kind. Be caring. Be genuine. Really, are these four things that difficult to do?
