I know these videos are comedy bits and aimed at a specific audience (gamers), but this one was very informative and educational. It's the definition of empirical research! The irony is Animal Crossing: New Horizon's wasn't included like Luke mentioned at the end since it's one of the grindiest games of all. It would be interesting to see how much players ear per hour in not just Bells, but also Nook Miles since that's the newest currency and incentive to grind.

I do the opposite when buying a game. Hades cost me about 0.2p for every hour I played, whilst Tekken 7 was about £4 an hour. I know which I feel better about. (Elite Dangerous works out at an amount per hour so low I'd have to be post-WW2 Hungarian inflation to make it equal real cash)

This really shows how little you actually get in games that work with a microtransaction-based ingame currency monetary system. The fact that you often have to play hours a day to earn even a fraction of what you'd simply buy with a tenner is ridiculously sad. In case it wasn't obvious, I really miss the old days where $60 got you a full game you could play and enjoy for more than 100 hours.

I feel like this video is on its head. The more worthwhile question for me is "is it worth it to spend real money or not?" The vast majority of people say "no, never!" But, I'd like to know how long it would take to "earn" £5 by playing. Is it better to play to unlock, or is it better to just buy the thing? The results are the same, but it feels different when put that way. So here's how long it takes to earn £5 worth of unlocks rather than just spending the money. SWBF2 - 1.29 hours Apex L - 3.13 hours Fall Guys - 8.19 hours GTA O - 9.80 hours ACV - 18.51 hours Fifa - 31.25 hours Fortnite - undetermined (dividibg by zero is a no-no) But, suffice to say I'd rather spend £5 for an unlockable I really want than have to grind 30+ hours of a game. But with SWBF2, I can get an unlockable by playing for little over an hour, which means I will never pay to unlock something in that game. My son has a weekly allowance he almost always spends on videogame unlocks (Fortnite, Roblox, etc.) But, I'd rather spend real money and give him a gift of a buff-cat skin than have him spend hundreds of hours playing a video game.

GTA Online USED to be fairly generous with payouts, but "not enough people were buying shark cards" so mission payouts got cut by something like 90%. That's when I stopped playing, came back when they finally released the Heists, and while those net a decent amount, they take time, setup, and if you don't have a group, you have to rely on randoms, and the amount of times people would troll and intentionally fail was staggering.

The alternate angle on "how much am I being rewarded for playing an hour" is "how much will they charge me to skip an hour of playing." Because it's all about paying to *not play* the (grindy or boring parts of the) game you probably already paid to be able to play in the first place. Or a third way of describing it: to be able to play the fun parts of the game, you need to pay money and then pay in hours, though you can pay more money in place of the hours. (I mostly only worry about in-game currencies at all if I can accumulate them by playing the parts of the game that I wanted to play anyway.)

I kind of like when games include an in game currency that cannot be bought ; In Clash of Clans for example you receive legend tokens for participating in Clan War Leagues, you can use these points to buy THE BEST items in the games (Hammers, which complete a build instantly at no cost, and also statues that are just a slight flex on others who haven't saved them up for the flex, or reached a high enough tier to buy the higher statues) Another interesting thing about Clash is how they reworked their entire $$$ system : in the past they relied on the highest level players spending a lot of $$$ (and insane hours of activity) to compete at the highest level, however... they removed the benefits to spending hours and $$$'s at the top, brought in a $5 fortnite style gold pass, that offered perks, and effectively moved their market to something much more appealing to any player. Clash also gives you gems (in game currency), and as you upgrade your base you can actually improve that revenue too (ie. Gem Mine Upgrades), and completing achievements.

Of course, the 'fun' thing about doing the calculations and presenting the numbers in this way (conclusion re-contextualising not withstanding) is that if one of these games wanted to look better, they can just whack up the prices of the real purchases by 10 or 100 fold and suddenly it's "Fifa pays £16 an hour!" Yet somehow I don't think that'd actually be a good thing...

Excellent work and it further supports why I never pay real money in either a free to play game or game that I've already bought. None of that microtransaction bs for me. My mom has not learned that and I've more than once seen how much she's paid for stuff in her little mobile games. It's shocking. I'm so glad I stick to single-player games (or turn off the online/multiplayer option) that don't have microtransactions. If I have to pay real money to get something in a game I've already bought then I don't need it that badly. The pay-to-play and pay-to-win strategies are such a scam. Spending real world money in a game that I've already fully bought pisses me off more than the free-to-play ones that have microtransactions. I play Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. I've played for a year now and not once have I spent real world money to get leaf tickets or anything else in that game. It helps that I'm very selective about what I spend leaf tickets on. The occasional bit of clothing or item, the occasional fortune cookie, and that's it. With the cookies, I usually wait until the last day it's available unless it's a cookie where I like the look of everything I might get. So yeah, in that game it's actually pretty easy to save up leaf tickets and avoid spending real world money in it.

@@ejgeldart4820 I refuse to spend any money on EA games as a result of what they tried with Battlefront 2. The game represents the first attempt at putting F2P mechanics into a video game that charges full price. There is no compromise on this issue. No improvement, no compromise, is worth encouraging this behaviour. EA need to burn as a company. They have a history of being evil since they existed.
